They have never been part of indus valley civilization , gandahara etc. Like I said they are not original inhabitants of KPK. Original inhabitants of KPK were hindus of same origin as Punjabis.

As for as their origin is concerned , they are derived from ancient eastern iranian people like Scythians and bactrians.

A few months back I did a thread here regarding Mahabharata, the people living in Punjab (maybe ruling Punjab were called Bahlika’s probably from Balkh). http://www.paklinks.com/gs/indo-pak-history/576722-western-tribes-of-mahabharata.html

The biggest tribes of Punjab like Jatts (are scythians), Gujjars and Rajputs all had Central Asian origin at some time but they are settled in the area for around 1500-2000 years. I feel the original inhabitants of Indus valley were Dravidians.
