Parsis - A recognised minority

A few months back, I started reading collection of novels by famous writer Bapsi Sidhwa. While ‘Ice Cabdy Man’ remained my favorite due to its topic (partition) and the fact that I had watched Deepa Mehta’s movie ‘Earth-1947’. Her other novel ‘Crow-eaters’ was about a Parsi family. Due to some specific terminology used in the novel, I couldn’t enjoy many parts of the novel.

Parsis are very talented people, they have contributed a lot for our society. Inspite of being in minority, they made their presence felt in all walks of the life.

So whats the history of Parsis? Wherefrom they migrated in India? There names suggested that they are of Persian origin? Why they left Iran? Do they still exist in Iran?

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

In mumbai you can feel great influence of parsis man.....
properties on every prime locality are owned by parsis....
even there are irani restaurant run by parsis.....
As much i know parsis landed in navsari of gujrat and asked for refuge.....
then king of navsari put forward four conditions of refuge...
1.they should adopt gujrati as their mother tongue
2.they should adopt dressing of gujrat thats why parsi women wear sarees in gujrati style..
3.they should cease carrying weapon
4.their marriage should be performed like gujrati hindus...
Even today all these conditions are part of parsi culture

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

Parsis also don't smoke. Is it part of their religion?

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

Are you sure?:faizy:

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

Yes.. Because I've worked with a Parsi Boss.

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

do you have tower of silence in karachi?

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

Is Navsari and Surat same city?

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

yes, I think there is one in Parsi Colony, near Mehmoodabad.

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

both cities are close to each other you may call them twin cities............:)

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

Because I've read that they got refuge from ruler of Surat.. One more condition that I remember ruler of Surat put on them that they won't eat cow.

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

maximum parsis are settled in mumbai or pune...
so marathi literature specially stories having plot in mumbai cannt spare parsis...
they have a guest appearance in near about every story.........:D
thats what you can see in hindi movies....

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

But why they get refuge in Gujrat? Where they came from?

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

i think because navsari is one of nearest port city for iranians....
they came here after islamic conquest of iran....
pata nahi unhe tab kaisa laga ho jab idhar bhi muslim rulers agaaye hoge.........:D

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

They would have felt like 'Aasmaan se gira khajoor main atka', but their current status say that they coup with all the fundamentalism with dignity and never lost their ground.

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

may be they were elite people of iran …so they ran away with lot of wealth…:faizy:

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

:nono: Their wealth was their determination and hardworking attitude. What do you think, when they migrated from Iran. As Iran was probably conquered by Arabs probably in Second Khalifa Hazrat Omar’s time?

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

They were persians who moved east to avoid islamic conquest / conversion that was happening in Iran at that point.

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

I think this migration has a history behind it.. Zoroastrianism was the major religion of Iran, before conquest of Arabs.. These Iranis had a history of conflict with Arabs. They were present in Arab Peninsula at the time of Prophet and if I'm not wrong they were known as Majoosi (worshipper of fire) in Arab. Salman Farsi (AS) , a companion of the Prophet, belonged to Iran and before accepting Islam, he was a Majoosi.

Re: Parsis - A recognised minority

yup. they are big on fire. like many ancient religions.
there is still a tiny minority of zoroastrians in Iran, I have a couple of persian friends here in the west who are still zoroastrians.
