Parallel Cultures

Heard that ‘Lahore’ and ‘Delhi’ show similar cultural characteristics. While Mumabi and Karachi are twins as far as social and cultural environment is concerned.

Is this a right observation? If yes, to what extent?

Re: Parallel Cultures

Yes I think Lahore and Delhi have similarities and same is the case between Mumbai and Karachi. I might be wrong but I find similarities even in Sindhi and Gujarati languages.

Re: Parallel Cultures

I can understand Gujarati to good extent.

As far as Lahore and Delhi are concerned, both got sizable Punjabi population, but these cities have different culture than rest of Punjab.

Similarities between Karachi and Mumbai is Bhai log :hehe:

Re: Parallel Cultures

I have heard some Delhi walas speak, which has some Punjabi tinge. Lahore is urbanized, hence you can say that there are some differences with rural Punjab.

Re: Parallel Cultures

It seems that both the cities are dominated by Northern Indian culture than Punjab's culture. The difference kept on widening with the passage of time and as you said urbanisation of the area.

Re: Parallel Cultures

You are right, but during the past decade or so some other cities of Punjab are being urbanized too. I think that we are witnessing the effects of globalization, I dont think this can be completely stopped. The government should take some steps to preserve the culture of these areas though.

Re: Parallel Cultures

I was watching an ad about some housing society in Gujranwala (which is not far from Lahore) and the footage showed some good development.

When I visited Gujranwala around 10 years back, it was literally a pind. They got B-copy of Sheraton as 'Shelton'. There was a Baraat from rural Punjab stayed in hotel during our stay and they did quite a halla gulla to make our life miserable.

Even Faisalabad with D-town and other posh areas depicted environment which remind you rural Punjab.

Re: Parallel Cultures

Same is the case with Sialkot and Faisalabad. Sialkot was worse than a pind a decade ago, I have heard of some development there too during the past decade. Began from Musharraf's era and has continued. Faisalabad was around D ground, but since then the infrastructure has improved.

Re: Parallel Cultures

Karachi... Mumbai: Both are port cities.... financial capital... busy life...

Dehli... Lahore: Both were under Mughal empire.... languages are same....

Re: Parallel Cultures

Mughal ruled Peshawer and Kashmir as well... how come Lahore doesn't share culture with Amritsar and ChandigaRh and share similarities with Delhi?

Re: Parallel Cultures

Kashmiri and Peshawari are different... their language is also different... their weather....their culture.... If you compare them with Lahore and Dehli...

Re: Parallel Cultures

I am from Lahore and here's what I gathered from anecdotal description from my Indian Delhi friends who have visited Lahore:

  • The tombs, forts, gardens, monuments and Mosques belonging to the Mughal era bears a striking resemblance with Delhi, same with buildings from British colonial era. So the mix of Mughal and Colonial architecture gracing both cities is a big visual similarity.

  • Both Cities have a huge Punjabi population and Punjabi is also commonly spoken language apart from the official Urdu/Hindi. So there's similar Punjabi frankness, friendliness, humour, light hearted banter and hotheadedness you see in the people from both Cities. ]

  • That also leads to similar food culture, extension of Punjabi culture, Lahories are famous for being full on foodies and they generally like to socialise around food like Italians, Delhians replicate this to some extent as well. So similar cuisine, eating habits and street food would be another one.

  • Delhi like Lahore have tree lined roads. They have soft spot for bit of greenery.

  • Same climate. The heavy morning fogs in winters and scorching heat in summers.

  • This is quite an interesting one. I know most Pakistanis would say that Pindi is an official military City but I've always felt that Lahore is very army friendly, maybe it's because I used to live in a military area but Lahore seems to be a popular residential choice for army men belonging other small towns of Northern Punjab. Delhi has some kind of military culture as well I assume.

  • Both Cities have a growing urban population and posh residential areas as well as old inner cities spots with all the cherished hustle and bustle with iconic trading and bazaar culture.

  • While Delhi is a Capital of India but Lahore also feels very much like a governmental/Federal City. I don't know if it's the way PMLN has built it.

  • I'm not sure if Delhi like Lahore has red brick government buildings with extended gardens (like PCB HQ).

Re: Parallel Cultures

delhi will now have aam aadmi party rule, lahore is under khaadim e aala rule. so similarz.

Re: Parallel Cultures

Lahore and Amritsar are infact referred to as twin cities...

PS: Lahore is completely punjabi (historically) as opposed to delhi...

Re: Parallel Cultures

Yes Delhi also has some red buildings like red fort and Parliament House etc, maybe courtesy of the moghuls.

Re: Parallel Cultures

Cathedral School, Lahore, is also a nice red brick building. Looks like the Brits too liked the colour red.

Re: Parallel Cultures

what are the similarities between karachi and mumbai anyway? other than the presence of parsees, goans and old british buildings, and maybe prominance of gujarati/memon trading classes.

Re: Parallel Cultures

tussle between so called 'sons of soil' and those who are still immigrants after six decades.

Re: Parallel Cultures

paan squits may be?

Re: Parallel Cultures

Karachi and Mumbai share a sea, right? Maybe it's something in the water. :O
