my mom and i always get into this argument. she doesnt think its formal enough to use paper plates even at a large gathering. i believe convenience is more important than seeming “formal”

It can depend on the gathering/function and the company. Paper plates at a wedding…no. In-laws visiting…paper plates?..no. If it’s like one or two families…regular plates are no big deal. So, it varies.
