How significant is the votes cast in favour of Palestine in the general assembly?
Re: Palestinian statehood
It is just symbolic move. It has no significance for the Palestinians. In fact it aides Israel as the Palestinians are effectively giving up their right to return to Israel and handing over their right to Israel to the Jews.
US, Canada and Czech republic voted against the resolution.
Re: Palestinian statehood
Largely symbolic development but nonetheless.. a step in right direction.
oh so US opposed? then they ask naively.. **‘why do muslims hate us?’ :halo:
Re: Palestinian statehood
Largely symbolic but why did Czech republic vote against or are they just puppets..

Out of all the Eastern European countries, Czech is the one with the closest ties to the US.
Re: Palestinian statehood
I must say I am hugely surprised and disappointed by Canadian vote. Totally goes against its overall perception in the world.

Same here. But what else would you expect from a country which is hugely influenced by a superior neighbour?
Palestinian statehood
Its not just symbolic. There is a reason why the US and israel were going crazy trying to threaten and bribe countries to vote no or abstain, and pressuring Abbas until the last minute to not go to the UN.
Amongst other things; Palestine can join the icc and and use it against israeli settlements and war crimes. Did you not hear them and hague asking palestinians to renounce the icc option before they consider the yes vote?
They have some leverage now, and thats something they desperately needed!
Re: Palestinian statehood
We need to be realistic it is extremely simplistic and wishful to think that Palestine is going to claim Israeli land. The reality of the situation is that Israel is there and the Palestinian people are suffering. This is indeed a step in the right direction but a marathon lies ahead.
Re: Palestinian statehood
The countries which voted against clearly did so because they were under US pressure.
Israel,
USA,
Canada,
Micronesia
Palau
Marshall Islands
Panama
Narau
Czech Republic
Can anyone share link about countries which abstained other than the map above?
Re: Palestinian statehood
Israel voted against due to the potential limits Palestine's new status could put on Israeli actions in future.
USA voted against for ideological reasons.
Canada voted against for ideological reasons (pressure from the USA has nothing to do with it - Canada elected a right-wing government for economic reasons and gets a right-wing ideological foreign policy with it)
Czech Republic voted against because it wants US anti-missile missiles to be based there, so it is trying to show its loyalty.
The Pacific Islands are economically mostly dependent on the USA so always back its position.
Re: Palestinian statehood
3000 new homes announced around west bank and jerusalem by Israel, after this.
Re: Palestinian statehood
terrorist green, bad bad green…
Palestinian statehood
Isreal is very isolated... Esp after all bar one europeans allies did a u turn and voted no.. Even germany abstained. Israel was really stung about that. Now its lashing out in anger and even then its gonna alienate herself even more. And cant wait to see the pals dragging her and supporters to the icc. :-)a
Re: Palestinian statehood
doesn't matter. As long as jews have the moneys and power to influence the super powers. this means zilch.
Re: Palestinian statehood
congrats to Palestine....overall meaningless but a step in the right direction...more importantly Israel must be feeling isolated,
by the way, muslim ummah in general and Pakistani public in particular must be highly confused ... banging their head against the wall...for years religious bigots had told them that UN is nothing but US and Israel puppet..how the hell a ruling came in Palestinians favor in that case? most of these stupid masses must be attributing this to some supernatural/divine inspiration, which softened "kuffar souls and hearts"...lol..otherwise it has to be a "conspiracy" with some hidden agenda...
I am sure religious bigots in our "ummah" must be worrying to find new ways to continue to feed hatred to masses...Hamas must be upset too...they now need more dead bodies of kids to emotionalize international community....they cant let momentum to go away by a "stupid" ruling...
Re: Palestinian statehood
^dude everyone knows general assembly is a useless body, having no real authority or clout. Even security council gets 'vetoed'. I don't know why people are imagining things.
Palestinian statehood
Things are changing and changing quick A few years ago this vote would simply not have happened. That support would be unthinkable. Ignoring israeli/US pressure would have had consequences. That has now changed. The tide is simply shifting. As always; when divine power is at work, no amount of money or power can stop that. People tend to put those above the power of God. People need to remember that every pharaoh has his day-and that day always comes to a crashing end!

Actually your average pakistani is much more politically aware than the average american; who are quite famous for their ignorance and stupidity. Even in remote villages, nearly every house has a tv or radio, and no the news reader is not your average maulvi, they are usually the opposite. Radio BBC urdu is quite popular actually...so you have a gall calling them ignorant!
But take you for example, and i take it you are american. You think hamas were upset about the vote, and you are wrong. According to their leader it was a victory for the armed resistance! Did you not know theyve formed a unity coalition with fatah? Did you also not know that the unity deal was actually precondition for abbas to be able to go to the UN? The vote could only have happened if hamas had wanted it! But i bet your news source left that bit out!
So your smug ignorance is quite telling. Your msm must not tell you much, because they have only have one narrative to tell, but when people like you regurgitate the official narrative over and over while sitting on your high horse, well its quite comical to say the least. Honestly, We've heard it all before and it doesn't make it any less ridiculous.
But the point is... Dont accuse the masses of pakistanis of being politically 'ignorant' when they are genuinely not; but esp dont if you are an american/westerner who swallows the given line...You have no justification in pointing fingers at others..What..so... ever!
Secondly; find an alternative news source. Your msm only has one narrative, and that is generally paid for. You are not a free country, as much as you like to espouse. Your media has is not free either.
Personally I would recommend rt.com and guardian. Al Jazeera english has some good opinion pieces and documentary, but i dont thing its as independent as it used to be since the king took over himself. They may be a quite a few out there; you just need to make the effort!!
