CHENNAI: The Gwadar port being built by Pakistan with Chinese assistance in its Baluchistan coast has “serious strategic implications for India”, Naval Chief, Admiral Sureesh Mehta has said.

“Being only 180 nautical miles from the exit of the Straits of Hormuz, Gwadar, being bulit in Baluchistan coast, would enable Pakistan take control over the world energy jugular and interdiction of Indian tankers,” he said delivering T S Narayanaswamy Memorial lecture in Chennai on Monday night.

The challenge for India was to balance relations with China in such a manner that competition for strategic significance of space in the Indian Ocean leads to cooperation rather than conflict, he said

“The pressure for countries to cooperate in the maritime military domain to ensure smooth flow of energy and commerce on the high seas will grow even further,” he said speaking on “Oceanic Influence on India’s Development in the next Decade.”

Talking about “Chinese designs on the Indian Ocean,” Mehta said China had a strategy called `String of Pearls,’ as per which it seeks to set up bases and outposts across the globe, strategically located along its energy lines, to monitor and safeguard energy flows. “Each pearl in the string is a link in a chain of the Chinese maritime presence,” he said.

“Among other locations, the string moves Northwards up to Gwadar deep sea port on Pakistan’s Makran coast. A highway is under construction joining Gwadar with Karachi and there are plans to connect the port with the Karakoram Highway, thus providing China a gateway to Arabian Sea,” he said adding that this could pose a problem for India.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Havent heard about Gawadar in ages... At one time, this was supposed to be Pakistans answer to Dubai. How long ago that seems now..

Anyways, with the direction this country seems to be headed, Gawadar is hardly the threat India should be concerned with.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Gwadar would serve to Pakistan's advantage in so many ways. Oh how i wish the country would just move forward with peace. :(

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Oh I don't know if Gawadar could be a "problem" for India only. Heck the two countries have enough nukes pointed at each other with enough destructive power that a piddly port could never do in 100 years.

It is time both India and Pakistan "encourage" development and avoid being jealous of each other.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

you think port and project at this scale might be done within few Years, i believe you are looking for way in this thread to disrespect gov & specially mushi.

May Allah save you from mushi-phobia.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

INSHALLAH, Mush wont live forever...

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

With Mush leadership, this port wont be done in another 300 years.. Who in their right mind would invest in terrorist infested, political and economic liability like Mushies Pakistan...

God save you from your Mush lovers delusions...

Honestly, buddy how old are you?

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Fortunately so far this is not the case!. Do not be so pessimistic.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Alhamdulilallah. India should have nothing to worry about then. :)

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Well said! Nobody lives forever! Nobody!

But the monuments, cities, ports etc. do live for a long long time. I hope Gawader is one such place in Pakistan.

Re: Pak’s new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

He started it, our lovely politicans and their judges don’t have enough brain to know the importance of such project.
Inshallah he is going to finish it. Long may the growth continue. :jhanda:

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

It will be. It is one of the most important development projects for Pakistan. All thanks to the great President Musharaf and his govt this project has made the progress it has in the past few years.

Jalnay walo ko jalnay do.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

You don't know what your talking about.

In 1993, Pak govt started technical and financial feasibility study for the development of the Gwadar port, under the elected politcians.

Long before the dictator seized power.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

So why did it take another 10 years before construction began?

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Do you remember how long these govts lasted?

1-3 years each, including 1993 when the feasibility report started, the govt changed

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

fakedeal is a PPP supporter so you couldn't expect much of it. He is probably doing a feasibility study on his stool.. GO FIGURE!! :D

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Don't bull****. The project wasn't even launched!

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Yet again you MQM wallahs refuse to belive any facts that go against your dictator.

The Gwadar feasibility study was started in 1993, by NS, long before Mush was in power. Construction started in 2002, with PM Shaukat Aziz pushing for it.

The groundwork was started in the 90's govts, a simple fact, it does not whether you belive it or not.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

Groundwork happens when there is something on ground..

Good job calling all your opponents MQM lol.

Re: Pak's new port has strategic implications for India: Navy chief

LOL. Back to name calling when you have no answers. :D
