Pakistan's sports performance

During Musharraf’s rule, Pakistan’s sports perfomance has declined drastically. What do you think about this?

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

Pakistan used to win 4-5 gold medals at the Asian games but at the last Asiad in Doha, it failed badly.

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

I'm not so sure. Is this a thread anti-musharraf or can you provide us with some usefull info. To prove your claim right. :)
Btw how about you list all sports events, sport categories in which we normally participate and how we perform. What you think?

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

Our hockey team has constantly declined. Our cricket team failed to make to the semi finals of the last two world cups.

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

Squash is declining day by day.

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

Mostar, I dont see cricket a big problem for us. There is enough potential back home to beat any country in this world.
Yes we had probs at hockey (see my other post in other thread).
How do you link all these things with the Mushy? Since I believe Army has done a lot on sport in our country. Don't you?

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

So my dear what cricket has achieved so far? Just one world cup?

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

In 1990 Beijing Asian Games, Pakistan won 5 gold medals. Doha in 2006 nil!

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

Boxing used to be sports, Pakistan always shined at the Asiad! But at the last games, India finished ahaed of Pakistan for the first time.

Re: Pakistan’s sports performance

Don’t be dishearted, have a look at the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_In_Pakistan
And understand, that Pakistan sports is experiencing reform of all kind.
Soon Pak will represent us in almost every sports.
I’m pretty sure.
I heard some good news about the Pak football team (some say, they have the potenial to beat top Asian teams). :jhanda:

Re: Pakistan’s sports performance

A good joke!

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

The major reason for failing in sports is politics...
seen so much bickering in all sports bodies... and with the introduction of Non-Professional heads of these bodies the results r obvious..

Jokes are not published as articles:

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

There were plans to build a sports city outside Lahore just as recently as last year. However, I have not heard anything new about it ever since. Does anyone have any news about that project? I fear that like most proposals in Pakistan, this one might have been put on the shelf as well. Just too much red tape to overcome in the country.

Re: Pakistan’s sports performance

Even though top 100 in the next 2 years might be a bit too optimistic, I’m glad that the Pakistani Football Federation is atleast making an effort to improve dramatically. However, they absolutely need to establish a domestic football league in order to compete with other nations in Asia. Every country has a relatively reputable domestic league and that is the only way to develop players on a consistent basis.

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

It may just be coincidence but yes hockey has definitely been neglected by successive governments for a good 15 odd years.

By contrast we were doing quite well during Zia's time

Hockey: Once we were the proud holders of all 4 major titles simultaneously incl. the Olympics (1984), the World Cup (1982), Champions' Trophy (1979-81) and the Asian Games (1982)

Squash: We had the incomparable Jahangir Khan

Cricket: We managed to reach the semis of all three World Cups in 1979, 83 and 87 and in the late 80s under Imran we were widely regarded as the second-best test team after the mighty West Indies

Bridge: I think Zia something was the second best player in the world

and ofcourse we had the bholu and goga pehelwaan

Re: Pakistan’s sports performance

Are you guys a sleep while living abroad?
Maybe this link will open some ppls eyes:

Re: Pakistan’s sports performance

That is a joke. We need a proper football league, with good corporate and federal support so that our players get the best training available to them. Can’t compete at the international level while playing essentially amateur level football in Lyari.

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

sports programs dont develop or decline in a handful of years, for every jehangir khan, we needed hundreds in diff age groups competing to take on his role,

Pakistan typically has had poor organization, poor training and poor grassroots level sports. The country has benefited from heroics of a few players, and when they are gone, there may or may not be others to take that spot.

realize that we lost an entire generation of players atleast in karachi due to politics and violence. Maybe in rest of Pakistan as well.

add to it ongoing issues with mismanagement with sports and u have a recipe for disaster.

although teh recenty moves in football area by brining in dual national pakistanis from UK leagues as well as the pak football federation has been encouraging.

Re: Pakistan's sports performance

X2, do you have more on that?
I think I have been sleeping eyes wide open. I'd like to read on that.
Appreciate a link, article on that. Thanks.
