It was unfair of the UK to decide to award Salman Rushdie Knighthood. He is one of the world’s most controversial and hated figures. They could have done without according such ‘honour’ on him. It does only one thing; break Muslim hearts.

**Pakistan deplores UK decision to knight Rushdie **
ISLAMABAD: **Pakistan on Monday deplored the decision by the British government to knight Salman Rushdie and termed it “insensitive” to the Muslims, the world over.

**“We deplore the decision of the British government to knight him,” Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam told reporters at the weekly briefing. **
Commenting on the decision by the British government to grant knighthood to the author of controversial “Satanic Verses”, the spokesperson said it would undermine efforts to bring harmony and fostering dialogue among civilisations.
**“This decision is obviously insensitive to the sentiments of Muslims around the world,” she said and added Rushdie had “insulted and maligned” the Muslims.
Ms Aslam said Islamabad would convey its sentiments officially to London. **
**Earlier the country’s Parliament unanimously adopted are solution protesting the decision of knighthood and demanded its withdrawal. **
The Indian born British author Rushdie in 1988 published abook in which he had used derogatory words for the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him).
**Iranian Supreme leader Ayatullah Khomeini issued a decree against Rushdie that he be killed for publishing the blasphemous book in 1989.

**The Punjab Assembly also strongly condemned the knighthood for Rushdie and demanded its withdrawal.
The National Assembly unanimously condemned Britain’s award of a knighthood to author Salman Rushdie and asked for the title to be withdrawn to avoid offending Muslims. **
Indian-born Rushdie, 59, was forced to go into hiding for a decade after Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989 issued a death sentence over his book “The Satanic Verses,” claiming it insulted Islam.
**Rushdie was awarded the knighthood by Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Saturday.
“This house strongly condemns the title of Sir awarded to Salman Rushdie,” parliamentary affairs minister Sher Afgan said, reading the resolution passed by the National Assembly.
“We demand from Britain to refrain from such acts which hurt the sentiments of Muslims and take back the title of Sir given to Rushdie,” Afgan said.
The resolution added that the award would encourage “contempt” for the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). **
