Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

Pakistan’s failure to win its two match series in the West Indies means that three sides are now level on 100 points in the LG ICC Test Championship table.

Pakistan remains fourth in the official Test table but the 1-1 series draw has seen its rating fall by two points so that it is now ahead of Sri Lanka and South Africa only when the ratings are recalculated to three decimal places.

The home draw boosted West Indies’ rating by two points but it is still in eighth place, 22 points adrift of its nearest rival New Zealand.

ISLAMABAD: The recent drawn Test series against the West Indies has put Pakistan on the verge of moving out of the top four teams in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings.

Pakistan, who had 102 rating points before the start of the West Indies series, lost the opportunity of going clear of their nearest rivals and are now tied with Sri Lanka and South Africa on 100 points. Any gains by Sri Lanka or South Africa from here on would put Pakistan out of the top four.

Sri Lanka are scheduled to play the West Indies in a Test series at home in July and if they win that series, Pakistan will definitely be out of the top four.

Before the West Indies series Pakistan had a two-point lead over Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Pakistan have a tough assignment ahead as they face world No 2 England as their next assignment at home in October this year. The series is considered as one of the toughest challenges for the Pakistanis in recent times.

With a clean sweep over Bangladesh in the two-Test series earlier this month, England have 111 points while world champions Australia are sitting comfortably at the top with 132 points. India, who drew the three-Test series at home against Pakistan earlier this year, are placed third with 107 points.

The drawn series against Pakistan have boosted West Indies’ rating by two points but they are still eighth, 22 points adrift of their nearest rivals New Zealand.

Meanwhile, the outcome of the Pakistan-West Indies series is also a point of worry for Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, who might lose his bonus if Sri Lanka go on to beat West Indies in the home series.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has promised Woolmer a $50,000 bonus if he succeeds in keeping Pakistan among the top four Test playing nations of the world.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

If Paistan will outperform England in Tests to be held in December, then Pak have a strong chance of improving its position to 3rd. With news of Shaoaib Akhter making a come back in that series, spreading out from officials even these days, that task will be achieved easily. With Shoaib Akhter in the team, we will be able to give England some good treat to be amongst the top 3.

Re: Pakistan’s No. 4 test ranking under threat

First of all we have to follow the other matches and results before Pak england series. I am pretty sure that the situation will be different at that time. Srilanka will probably be ahead at that time and Pakistan will probably be sitting at number 5 or 6 position.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

You are very right my friend, but if Pakistan will be at no. 5 for instance and they beat England, who will be no.2 at that time too, then Pakistan will gain many extra points due to position differnce. ICC ranking system keeps into account the position of your oppenent too.

When Pakistan vs India test series was drawn, Pak gained points while India lost (since India was a rank above Pak).

Again in Pak vs WI, series was a draw again but Pak lost point and WI gained points. (since Pak was above WI)

Now Pak will gain many extra point and will definitely come to at least no. 3 if they will beat England in test series. (As England will be at no.2 and Pak at no.5 as you say)

Re: Pakistan’s No. 4 test ranking under threat

Let see how many points england lose in Ashes. I hope they don’t

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

Yes we must hope for the best. England will not loose much points, but if Australia loose the series, they might loose 1st position.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

^ what are the chances Pakistan will beat England (and win the series) ? BTW, 1 series loss for Aus won't mean they loose 1st position, the gap between Eng and Aus is 21 points.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

Well If England will WHITE WASH Australia (definitely impossible) they will take the no.1 position.

With Shoaib Akhter in our attack, England batting cannot survive for long.

Re: Pakistan’s No. 4 test ranking under threat

^ :smack: please, stop making Shoaib Akhtar a God of bowling, he is just one player in the team. Lets go to Shoaib Akhtar thread and discuss what difference he can make in the team.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

ok dear,

I am moving to that thread.

In cricket the Captain is every thing.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

1 Australia 127
2 England 119
3 India 112
4 South Africa 100
5 New Zealand 100
6 Sri Lanka 99
7 Pakistan 95
8 West Indies 74
9 Zimbabwe 27
10 Bangladesh 5

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

The most Pakistan can gain from the upcoming series is 10 points, only if we whitewash England 3-0 which is highly unlikley. But even a series win will take our rating to 102, well clear of Sri Lanka, South and New Zealand but well below India. To break into the top 3 we will need to perform consistently for some time. Aussies are still far ahead of the pack.

Our first aim should be to clinch the series and close the gap between us and the other higher ranked teams. We are definatley a better side then our ranking and one good series will place us 3 places higher. Best of luck, InshAllah by the end of this series we would be talking about closing the gap on India and England.

Re: Pakistan’s No. 4 test ranking under threat

 ..there are only 10 teams …

Re: Pakistan’s No. 4 test ranking under threat

Oops I meant top 3 !

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

Woolmer and company have not done a proper job when it comes to test cricket and that is clearly evident from our slide in rankings.

Test cricket is all about specialists unlike one dayer's where jack of all traits but masters of none can do a decent job. Pakistan has to reassess its strategy of test cricket which is the nursery for our cricketing future.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

^fartguru: It was our stupid PCB's notion of aiming at ODIs, remember right after WC'03 most of seniors were dumped to "rebuild for WC'07"?? Well their aim was for ODI championship and we are doing better in ODIs, I have no clue why our PCB champs overlooked the real cricket i.e. Test Cricket.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

.

Re: Pakistan’s No. 4 test ranking under threat

Captain1, I agree with your view, our test cricket has suffered because of the stupid Pcb decision makers.

Leiken Bhai, now everyone realizes the importance of test cricket and the negative impact of too much ODI’s. Its high time they start looking at specialist players and build for the future.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

Bhai for test cricket we also need players that can play five days in the field. Fitness is one thing that is haunting our team. Be it Inzi, Akhtar, Razzaq, Butt or Sami. There seems to be a lack of interest or mood for test cricket among our players in general.

Beside we need to drop the idea of playing more than one allrounder. Even if its Razzaq, Rana or Afridi who are effected. We need to play just one Allrounder. We should play 5 specialist batsmen, specialist means who have nerve to play 60+ overs with consistansy and calm. No tullaybaaz should go on crease in test cricket. Afridi's this years Indian endeavour was different since it was pscycological advantage playing a devastating opener against medium pacers. But we must play 5 batsmen, 4 specialist bowler, 1 allrounder and a keeper. Atleast two batsmen (Younis and Butt) are capable of guzare laaiq test bowling to give regulars some rest.

Re: Pakistan's No. 4 test ranking under threat

Any idea who is going to open Pak innings vs Eng...Shahid Afridi?...and the pace attack...
