Researchers: Ancient man invented dental drill 9,000 years ago

WASHINGTON (AP) – Proving prehistoric man’s ingenuity and ability to withstand and inflict excruciating pain, researchers have found that dental drilling dates back 9,000 years.

Primitive dentists drilled nearly perfect holes into live but undoubtedly unhappy patients between 5500 B.C. and 7000 B.C., an article in Thursday’s journal Nature reports. Researchers carbon-dated at least nine skulls with 11 drill holes found in a Pakistan graveyard.

That means dentistry is at least 4,000 years older than first thought – and far older than the useful invention of anesthesia.

This was no mere tooth tinkering. The drilled teeth found in the graveyard were hard-to-reach molars. And in at least one instance, the ancient dentist managed to drill a hole in the inside back end of a tooth, boring out toward the front of the mouth.

The holes went as deep as one-seventh of an inch (3.5 millimeters).

“The holes were so perfect, so nice,” said study co-author David Frayer, an anthropology professor at the University of Kansas. “I showed the pictures to my dentist and he thought they were amazing holes.”

How it was done is painful just to think about. Researchers figured that a small bow was used to drive the flint drill tips into patients’ teeth. Flint drill heads were found on site. So study lead author Roberto Macchiarelli, an anthropology professor at the University of Poitiers, France, and colleagues simulated the technique and drilled through human (but no longer attached) teeth in less than a minute.

“Definitely it had to be painful for the patient,” Macchiarelli said.

Researchers were impressed by how advanced the society was in Pakistan’s Baluchistan province. The drilling occurred on ordinary men and women.

The dentistry, probably evolved from intricate ornamental bead drilling that was also done by the society there, went on for about 1,500 years until about 5500 B.C., Macchiarelli said. After that, there were no signs of drilling.

Macchiarelli and Frayer said the drilling was likely done to reduce the pain of cavities.

Macchiarelli pointed to one unfortunate patient who had a tooth drilled twice. Another patient had three teeth drilled. Four drilled teeth showed signs of cavities. No sign of fillings were found, but there could have been an asphalt-like substance inside, he said.

Dr. Richard Glenner, a Chicago dentist and author of dental history books, wouldn’t bite on the idea that this was good dentistry. The drilling could have been decorative or to release “evil spirits” more than fighting tooth decay, he said, adding, “Why did they do it? No one will ever know.”

Macchiarelli said the hard-to-see locations of the drilled teeth in jaws seem to rule out drilling for decorative purposes. Frayer said the prehistoric drillers’ skill is something modern-day patients can use to lord over their dentists.

“This may be something to tell your dentist: If these people 9,000 years ago could make a hole this perfect in less than a minute,” Frayer said, “what are they doing?”

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

There were no Pakistanis 9000 years ago, but thanks for the info.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

LOL....

yeah there were. they were all colonising the middle east and the uk. lol

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

OMG thanks for letting me know, never realized that until you told me… Thank you verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry much…

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

AT LEAT THE INDIANS CANT CLAME IT LOL

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

So Afghanis must have invented it then.......hmmmmmmm....................:D

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

More than likely they were the ancestors of the Dravidians today and most of the present population of Indian-Pakistan.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

The headline should have been `muislims invented dentistry'..... :D

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

^^ there were no muslims at that time, but surely people of the land thats what is part of Pakistan now were the inventers. Credit goes to people of the land - Pakistanis.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

Maybe so but it should be worded that way. I don't mean to offend you all, current pakistan (geographically) has a rich history with civilizations like moenjo daro. So I didn't mean to offend, but don't tell you all weren't caght off gaurd when you read the title.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

Jinah sat in the same class with Jesus and Moses, 3,000 years ago.
The Pharaohs of Egypt were from Bahawalnagar. The Pyramids were actually called Minar-e-Pakistan, initially.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

Those people had nothing to do with us. Different language, different religion, different culture, different EVERYTHING.

By your example, modern Spain should modern credit for all the accomplishments of Arab Spain, of Al-Andalus. Who cares if modern Spanish people are Europeans, not Arabs? They live there now, so all the deeds of the Arabs should be credited to Spain now instead, right?

Actaully, while that is true of bhindia, most pakistanis are not dravidians, but are descendents of central asian turks, persian and arabs. Culturally, ethnically and religously we have nothing to do with bhindia. We are descended from a noble lineage of martial races such as turks, persians, afghans and arabs, our religion is monotheistic and shares the same respect as christianity and judaism, our architecture is based on arab, persian and turkish styles, our food and cloth we wear are 200% different from bhindians.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

No wonder those in power in Pak always have such great smiles.....i'm sure the billions they are making has nothing to do with it!!

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

Hi or Hi-shish again!

Oh Baboo Khan! Dinosaur bones discovered in the US are credited with being American. Guess what? There was no America as of today when dinos roamed the earth.

If you are so insensed with the use of "Pakistan" in the heading, we can always is Pakistani-Balochis invented the dentistry. Happy now?

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

Well, safe to say that anything before partition is the shared heritage of both India and Pakistan. If it werent, then Muslims of Pakistan would have no cliam on the structures constructed by the like of the Moghuls...
I mean, the Taj Mahal for example, is as much a legacy of Pakistanis as it is of Indians.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

May be for an academic discussion.

However Pakistanis can't announce to the world and say "Come visit Pakistan. See our Heritage, See Taj Mahal" people will laugh at us.

Sure we can say come visit Lahore Fort, Moinjodaro, Taxila etc. They are our heritage and we can claim our right on it.

Similarly this discovery so far has a stamp of Pakistan on it. Even Iranian Balochistan may not be able to claim it.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

Well yeah, it we were to advertise this discovery we would emphasize that its in Pakistan… But one has to admit, that its silly to claim this as a part of Pakistan History. The people who were in Pakistan thousands of years ago dont have much in common with us.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

  1. Harappans were not Dravidians ! There are all kinds of "theories" on the Harappan identity such as being Indo-European, Dravidian, Altaic, Semitic, or even an isolate. As long as the Indus script remains undeciphered, we will not know their true identity. As far as race is concerned, they were a multi-racial people as evident from their body remains excavated and its genetic analysis.

  2. Pakistan -- the land and people of Indus directly inherits one of the greatest ancient civilizations of the world, just the same way present-day Iraq, Greece, and Egypt (all three countries and their names also recent in origin) inherits their own great ancient civilizations. It is irrelevant that the descendents of Harappans are now mostly Muslims (Pakistanis). Descendents of ancient Mesopotamians and Egyptians are also now mostly Muslims, descendents of ancients Greeks and Romans are now mostly Christians. The geo-poltical entity of Pakistan might be a few decades old (so are its neighbors -- including India which was created one day after Pakistan out of British Raj), but the land and its people have a history dating back to thousands of years.

  3. There are clear evidences (genetic, cultural, etc.) that present day Pakistanis are the closest descendents of Harappans. Pakistanis are a blend of their heritage of Harappans, Rig Vedic Aryans, Persians, Greeks, Scythians, Parthians, Kushans, Hephthalites, Arabs,Turks, and Moguls. Harappans were certainly the ancestors of most Pakistanis, who absorbed or adopted the many waves of invaders/migrants through out the centuries. A people may evolve by adopting new ideas/beliefs, change with political environment, and racially get mixed with other peoples, but that does not erase their history.

Re: Pakistanis invented dentistry 9000 years ago

But that still don’t change the fact that they were our ancestors… 1000s of years from now our descendents will be different from us but we will still be their ancestors…
