Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

I feel so bad when I read such news. Really sad if these charges are true.

Anyone living in the NY/NJ area know more about it?

Three Pakistan natives were charged yesterday with running a multi-million-dollar credit card scam out of phony perfume stores in Jersey City, Bayonne, North Bergen and outside Hudson County, officials said.

The small group sent part of the money it bilked from the companies to Pakistan and the FBI is working to determine if the money was sent to fund nefarious activities such as terrorism, officials said.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio cautioned that “there is no connection, as of now, to any particular group or organization. It could be it was just sent over there to be used for personal purposes in the future - but the FBI is investigating.”

Yesterday investigators arrested Abdul Razzaq Bhatti, 50, of Fords, and Iselin residents Zahida Anjum Qayyum, 36, and her brother, Mazhar Qayyum, on charges that include identity theft, money laundering, theft by deception and conspiracy, DeFazio said. A fourth suspect is sought, but his identity was not released.

Bhatti and Zahida Qayyum appeared in court yesterday, but Mazhar Qayyum complained of health problems and was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center to be cleared for incarceration, officials said. A Superior Court judge set Bhatti’s bail at $2 million cash only and Zahida Qayyum’s at $1 million cash only.

“Operation Dollars and Scents” determined the group set up phony perfume businesses such as Kosmo Traders in Jersey City on Newark Avenue, Prestige Fragrances in Bayonne on Broadway, and Unique Traders in North Bergen on Kennedy Boulevard, and several in Iselin, DeFazio said.

Officials believe the group never sold any products at the stores.
The group set up corporate accounts with credit card companies for each fake business and then used credit cards in others names - some real people, some fictitious - and rung up sales until the cards were maxed out, DeFazio said.

When a credit card company got wise, the ring would drop that company name and create a new one. So far investigators have identified 15 to 20 fake businesses used at some time by the ring, said Lt. Tom Cooney of the Prosecutor’s Office’s Special Investigations Unit. Eventually the credit card companies saw the pattern and contacted the Prosecutor’s Office, which began an investigation six months ago.

Yesterday, warrants were executed at a dozen locations, including banks, as a result of the investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office, the Postal Inspection Service, the Secret Service, the FBI, Customs and Immigrations Enforcement, the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and police from Woodbridge and Jersey City, DeFazio said.

A number of bank accounts were frozen yesterday and as investigators sorted through the information, the scope of the ring continued to grow, DeFazio said.

In court yesterday, Zahida Qayyum proclaimed her innocence before the judge could caution her that anything she said would be used against her.

“I don’t have anything to do with this case,” she told the judge. “I wish I could prove that somehow. I’ve not even been here long enough for that. I worked as an AmeriCorps worker for a year and then I started studying - paralegal.”

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

please dont take it personally. I said it was something to think about.

I was merely commenting that you dont hear of abcds getting into such crime.
not to say that there is no crime in that group, but you dont hear of the type of stuff you hear about from ppl who moved from pakistan. Maybe its a question of values that were taught or maybe its socioeconomic standing where newer immigrants belong to a diff socioeconomic background than ppl who immigrated a while back.

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

Making us proud. I wonder where in Pakistan they are from...

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

or rather human beings.

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

no pakistanis, criminal activity is the one area where pakistanis shine. useless nation

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

Dude, we are all humans. Ghair-pakistanis are not really angels. You need to explore the world and start reading about other ethnic groups besides pakistanis and you will see that pakistanis are not the only ones that do this kinda of stuff. Hence, it has nothing to do with ethnicity but rather the the fact that we are all human beings and all of us have our positive and negative sides.

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

I agree. Look at the bhatta khor of Karachi or waderays of sind or chohdries of Punjab.

This was not the pakistan that Iqbal had dreamt of or Quaid had worked for. right?

PS: waisaY are you not pakistani? Having said that it actually quite wrong to generalize such things. I take my above words back. It may be prevelent in this community but not all five fingers are equal unless you yourself consider the same size of finger:)

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

not all pakistanis r like that, im not generalising but id say about 70% of em r like that

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

its about values and morals something which we as a nation lack. doesnt apply to government or the elite its at all levels

Re: Pakistanis in NJ charged over credit card scam

my friend generalising wud be 100% and 70% is something i made up. do u think a corrupt country like pakistan could even have a corruption measurement. half the reason we r not amongst the top ten corrupt countries in the world is because we’re getting so good at it that its hard to detect. pakistani brainpower :jhandaa:
