The data suggests that. One would expect to find and the analysis suggest that as per capita income of a country increases, general satisfaction with life increases with it.
Pakistan seems to be an outlier, along with some South American countries. A few ex-soviet states are unhappier than they should be.
I really dont know wut kinda questions were asked but I think if you ask a straightforward question, are you happy/satisfied? to our people, I’ve a strong doubt most will say yes. And there is no way its their fault either. Whenever I visit Pak I do take a similar survey myself among random people I meet. And hardly find the answer in positive.
So in the end of the day, it just depends what you are asking them. Also this survey is a bit old so I wouldnt weigh in too much.
Pakistanis have no concept of depression, mental illness, and mood disorders. God forbid, you are unhappy! They will not understand. They will think something is wrong with you and since they don’t believe depression and other disorders exist, you must be making it up or just plain crazy.
Or in the west these symptoms are over-diagnosed. While I agree that it goes undiagnosed in desis, but the west is on the other extreme. High school kids popping anti-anxiety pills because of exams?
That said, this study is statistical. It measures overall happiness of a people. The kind of people you talk about are already accounted for ( hopefully ).
I was just about to say that. Ask anyone if they’re happy and even if they’re getting their arm chopped off at that moment, they’ll probably reply with “Bas Allah ka shukar hai, buhat kuch diya hai Allah nay”.
