Re: Pakistanis and flat back of the head preferences...
I am a Punjabi and I have pictures with my pillow stuck between stack of books on its either side.
I'd have preferred to go with an all round oval head, I don't quite like the flat look. It's like wearing an outfit of your mom's choice for the rest of your life. There should be a way for infants to opt out of their parents' fashion choices.

Actually, there are cultural preferences about head shape. One of my friends is from Multan, and she went through a lot of trouble to get that flat, longish look typical of that area. Even my MIL was able to guess their ethnicity by looking at their kids' heads! I personally don't like it, but whatever floats their boat. When I had my kids, my mom just had me change the baby's position every so often (like Faisal stated above) and put the baby on the stomach for a little while. when it was awake.
Re: Pakistanis and flat back of the head preferences…
Oh my God! My mil made me do the same with my first daughter by using a teacup saucer. I felt so bad for the poor thing. She preferred a particular side and still kept turning her head as we wrapped more and more stuff around her, practically binding her. But after my mil left to go back home, I’d just let my daughter sleep in any natural position she chose. Her head turned out beautifully rounded and proportionate. That’s beautiful to me, not this flathead nonsense. I did absolutely no shaping with my second daughter either and she looks great as well.
Rather than a sandbag my mil used a small rice filled pillow case. It was terrible. I don’t suggest any of these head shaping ideas. Previous to having kids I didn’t really know about head shaping because my mother never did it with us and we’re Pathan. My husband however mentioned to me that he always wondered why his head was flat in the back. LOL…and I told him about his mother’s headshaping and he called her up and said, "What did you do to me?"He prefers rounded as well. I don’t know what prompted this cultural preference for flat heads. Why is it special?
Re: Pakistanis and flat back of the head preferences…
So I saw my nephew on Sunday and pointed out to my sister that his head is oddly shaped from the back.
The chubby Sufiyaan has preferred his left side since the day he was born and now that side of his head is ever so slighty flatter than the right.
I guess if you are trained to see this type of stuff (cuz your mother programmed it into your head by drilling it into the bhabhis, ), then it really sticks out at you.
I told her she was gonna get it from her MIL!!! Especially since I used to pitch a fit every time I saw him lying on that side…
