wait till you guys come across a kid that has a mis-shapen skull.
it's not until it's in your face that you notice it.
for boys....if they want to have a really short, cropped hairstyle and the head is not shaped well, it looks strange.
for girls.....when they have an updo or have all their hair pulled back in a ponytail, the shape of the head is very apparent and if it's not symetrical and well shaped, then it also looks strange.
also, note that the plate used to shape heads is not flat....it has a curvature that is concave...allowing for some roundness ..... not completely flat.

i remember something about rice pillows to shape the head. there also was this baby pilloy with a tiny flat circle in the middle. i think my mum tried to shape my bro's head in the beginning, but she just kinda gave up after a while. so far, he's got a normal head.

I heard all this, gone throught all this from my mom and my MIL!!!!!
The first 1-6 months are crusal, thats where the head can be misformed.
Like the gora ppl here have long heads as they let their babies sleep on the side, my nurse said that this way the baby will not swallow any milk if he vomits and stop breathing, but if you make sure that he/she has disgusted the milk then its ok to let the baby sleep on the back.
My MIL advised to mixed rice and flour in a pillow form and let her sleep on it, so that the back of her head is placed in the middle and she doesnt fall on her sides, well it didnt help much, she got flour alergic and her eye turned red, so we threw that plan away, my ammi made a pillow for her so we used that, you can do the saucer thing but only for an hour or so for a day not more.
My ammi told me to rap a duppta in our hands to make a round shap and let the head lay on that....
Well all this well meant advice made us .. hmm well it was well, but babies dont allway follow the plans, at first her head was kind of strange, but with time, as we gave up and said, Allah miah gave her this head, we're happy with it and let her sleep normally on her small pillow that mom made, that the head was at last perfect MAshallah. :)

that's strange. i usually hear and see people moving a baby's head around so that it doesnt got flat in the back.

but still does everyone do that? I have heard of ppl making sure the kid is not in one position for too long but have not heard of saucers and stuff.

We had all our kids develop round heads. Didn't use any saucers etc. We only made sure that the kids change position regularly while sleeping. Some of my friends are making their kids head flat from the back. I am not sure either is right or wrong, as this seems a matter of preference (too bad the baby has no opinion on this gigantic decision), however, just make sure the head is symmetrical. I have seen a few mid-teen boys whose heads were flat from one side and this really looks awful. Shame on their parents for not taking care or noticing at the right time.

Hi all,
So her head is 'flattening" but it's not that bad..not SUPER obvious and thankfully as a girl..not too noticable later on :) my mom is thrilled...
i can't believe people would do plates..so painful. I have a sore neck and can't imagine how achy some of these little poor babies might be.
