Ok, so i always heard about “sar sahee karna”…always assumed it was looking at a round head baby versus flat spots BUT now that I’ve had my lil one…my mom is on a mission and I’ve realized they like flat back of the head..WHAT??? Spoke with a friend and she said the same…and said she thought it was weird too but it is a Pakistani thing…is this common??

Is it possible to make a childs round head flat? I know in the frontier, most Pashtuns pride themselves on their broad shoulders and flat heads. I heard my mother make a couple of comments about black people having big round heads and how Pashtuns have nice flat heads. I think since Pashtuns are seen as the ideal image for the majority of South Asians, I guess flat heads are apart of that too.

well....dunno if it's supposed to be flat.....but babies sometimes have a tendency to lie with the weight on the side of the head (i.e. ear down) and this encourages the head to solidify in an oblong shape. It is this unattractive shape that my ammi always warned us to avoid.
so...in order to avoid this, we put a saucer (i.e. from a tea cup and saucer set) wrapped in a soft towel or flannel cloth underneath the child's head. This way it takes greater effort for the child to turn its head to the side and it remains in the back down position.
other families also use little sandbags as pillows that conform to the shape of the head and serve the same purpose of preventing the child from naturally turning onto it's sides.

my mom was from karachi and made sure that my back of my head was perfectly flat. They kept tilted books at around 45 degrees at the back of my head. thus i have a flat head. This phenomena is less comman in punjabis.

I'd say its pretty common even in Punjab. I was there last year and every lady who got hold of my little one tried her bit on her head :D
Its not really flat, you can say its NOT rounded since the rounded head looks weird. we're onyl talking about the forehead and back fo the head. Some people have the bakc of their heads looking like icecream bowls

Pediatricians recommend that infants always sleep "face-up" or slightly to one side to reduce the possibility of SIDS. Because the cranial plates of an infant are relatively soft, this sleeping position often results in a flat spot on the back of the head. I assume that's what amelie is talking about.

no stu she is taking about making kids sleep on plates and forcefully shaping their head so its not rounded in the back.. kinda like in japan womens feet were tied so they would not grow or in africa hoops are put around neck to elongate it.
I dunno, it just sounds freaky.

Stu, no peds in the US are all about Round heads...
cats meow...ok my mom suggested a pillow/little towels to get the "nice" head not long but also "flat in the back" ....and she even mentioned somepeople use a plate...
We don't use the towels after she's eaten until we're sure she's spit up everything she would, i only doing it during the day not at night due to SIDS scare....i'm doing it to make my mom happy but don't see what's so great about it..
definitly think it's in the punjab and northern areas too..
My lil one tends to like her right side so i'm trying to avoid flat side of the head...but this preference for flat back is so different
