What is with these dramas on ARY…showing women smoking??? This is certainly not our culture so why do they portray it in such a negative way???

Is anything shown on television really accurate of hte surrounding culture?
I’m not quite sure of Pakistani culture and its portrayal in their media, but here, tv shows, magazines, etc etc don’t accurately show what really goes on. For example… in Friends, it’s six white ppl… not a single blak or hispanic or asian person..now for NYC that’s damn near impossible to find… they’re unemployed or don’t earn as much as those apartments they “live” in would normally cost…

All kinds of people smoke. May be because they're hooked on to it and can't help it. Pakistani dramas show whatever they feel like. I don't believe the wide majority smokes. Also, the people that are shown smoking are usually the rich, so that also goes to show that women smoking in middle class or lower-middle class is not yet a norm.

Oh God, where have I been??? I have been in the US for the last 20 years so whatever the people here in US do is norm for them but when I see my own people doing such things especially smoking etc stuff were a taboo in our society but i guess times have changed.

i agree with u, although times have changed and pakistani girls do smoke nowadays, it seems awkward for me because it is not the norm in our culture and scoiety…buts as u said times ave changed

I am not more shcoked by paki women smoking, than paki male...or non-paki...smoking is bad, very bad for health and also because it's a nuisance to the people around you, unless you live in the middle of nowhere...I am sad that some woman think having the right to smoke is some kind of feminist battle won...because in the end they are the losers...

20 Years is a long time, but people change. I think women in Pakland do it becasue it is cool thing (they dont realize the hazards of smoking). I also heard that girls in Pakland drink booze as well. Any Bajis or Aunties on GS that can verify drinking. I know Suroor_CA02 is a boozer (her signature gives it away). Smoking/drinking Women in Pakistan are tarnishing the nice Islamic Image portrayed by our better nicer sisters.

Sometimes I wander if any of the posting guppies hv ever visited rural Pkistan!! Sheesh. Huka/Sheesha/Hubbly-bubbly has been part of the Sub-continent culture and women have always enjoyed a good smoke in the evening.
Smoking is certainly a big no no, but keep things in perspective. There are more ppl likely to start smokin in Pakistan than any western country. Therefore, why just marginalize women for our tunnel vision perceptions.
