In a few Muslim countries, such as Afghanistan, Iran, Nigeria and Saudi Arabia, adultery is the only capital offense punishable by rajm (i.e. stoning). Because it is referred to in Sunni and Shi’a hadiths, stoning is considered a part of Islamic Sharia Law. (wiki)

In Shi’ism stoning is not until death, it’s used to disgrace the fornicator. The Iranian government is wrong and their penalties are illegal according to Shariah Law.
