ISLAMABAD – Last week, police officers in the eastern Pakistan city of Lahore visited a mosque run by Ahmadis, a minority Muslim sect considered by the rest of the country to be heretical. They looked around, and then announced their conclusion: The mosque looks too much like a mosque.

So, two laborers who accompanied the police picked up their hammers and chisels and began removing Koranic verses etched over the building’s doorway, said Shahid Ataullah, a spokesman for the Ahmadi community in Lahore. The officers also told the Ahmadi clerics who run the mosque that the building’s minarets - the tall, spindly towers synonymous with mosque architecture - had to be covered up.

“For 28 years, this building has been here, and suddenly someone says this place looks too much like a mosque,” Ataullah said. “We can’t agree to this. This is fundamental to our beliefs. But we are told this is what the law is. And the cops say if we don’t do this, there will be rioting.”

The Ahmadi community in Pakistan, believed to number about 4 million, is one of the country’s most persecuted minorities. Because they revere another prophet as well as the prophet Muhammad, the Pakistani government considers Ahmadis “non-Muslims.” It’s a crime for members to use the term “mosque” to refer to their places of worship, and they are barred from uttering the common Muslim greeting, “as salaam aleykum.”

Ahmadis are also a prime target for Pakistan’s many extremist groups. Kidnappings and killings of Ahmadis are common, and Ahmadi members complain that police rarely show interest in pursuing suspects.

In May 2010, Pakistani Taliban gunmen stormed two Ahmadi mosques in Lahore and killed more than 90 people in suicide bombings, gunfire and grenades.

Ataullah says a Lahore Muslim cleric recently learned of the Quranic verse etchings at the Ahmadi mosque and complained to police, citing a law that bars Ahmadis from “directly or indirectly posing as a Muslim.” A conviction could mean a jail term of up to three years. The roughly 60 Ahmadi Pakistanis who belong to the mosque decided against putting up a fight. Members allowed the etchings to be removed, and then encased the minarets with sheet metal and tiling.

"We said, ‘Whether we agree or disagree doesn’t matter - you’re going to do it anyway,’ " Ataullah said. “We won’t stop you or oppose you. But we don’t approve of this.”

sadly, we dont believe in live and let live theory ...
I just fail to understand how did this mosque pose a threat to muslims?

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

Sad story. reminds me of jews under hitler's rule.

doesnt matter if you consider ahmadis as muslims or not , they should still be protected.
if you consider them muslim then they need to be protected as they are your fellow religion members
if you dont consider them muslims then they should be protected because islam gives protection to the minorities.

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

What would we do If an indian army officer wears uniform of pakistani forces and tries to misguide others with this.

Disgusting are the concepts that they(ahmedis) make in the name of islam.

Does majid e zarrar give you a hint?

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

Admedis deny the finality of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in the sense that we believe, that is he was the last messenger of Allah and Wahi has stopped coming after him. What they believe is that "the stamp" of Nubuwat is given to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and now new prophets can still come but with the approval and "stamp" of Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

If the above belief does not deny Faith then, I wonder what does?

They are non-muslims based on above understanding of the basic difference in Faith and they should not be allowed to publically use symbols and words pertaining to the religion of Islam in a country where they are legally declared non-mulsims. They should be abiding the law of the land and refrain from such display of symbols, kalma and faith.

If you see a Muslim destroying a wall of Quranic verses with chisles and hammers, its saving Islam.

If you see a non-muslim doing that, its blasphemy.

and the justice is served :D

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

Article says that they "removed" the verses, did not say those were "destroyed" :D

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

Ironic if the chubby man knew about the pioneer of the pakistani nuclear and missile program.

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

"Removed" the etched verses with hammers and chisels. Seems like a perfect thing to to in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.

Re: Pakistani police strip Ahmadi mosque of Muslim symbols

I am not talking about Muslim or non Muslim status of ahmedis. I am talking about using hammer to knockdown the wall that has quranic ayat.

"Removed" the etched verses with hammers and chisels. Seems like a perfect thing to to in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
