Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Are you seriously kidding me? WTH is going on? Has the entire country lost its collective mind?

(Reuters) - A policeman in Pakistan hacked a man to death for allegedly making derogatory remarks about the companions of the Prophet Muhammad, police said, just two days after a Christian couple was lynched over blasphemy in the same province.

The man, Tufail Haider, 55, was taken into custody late on Wednesday in the city of Gujrat after a group of people allegedly overheard him making the remarks, beat him up and handed over to police.

“Officer Faraz Naveed brought him to the police station and sent him to lock-up. Haider did not stop using nasty words about Sahaba (the companions) despite warnings from various officials,” said police officer Khurram Shehzad.

“At around 5.00 a.m., Naveed could not control his emotions. He went into his cell, brought an axe, entered the lock up and hit Haider’s throat several times.”

Haider died on the spot, police said.

Blasphemy is a serious offense in conservative Muslim Pakistan where those accused are sometimes lynched on the spot.

On Tuesday, in another part of Punjab province, a mob beat a Christian married couple to death and burned their bodies in a brick kiln for allegedly desecrating a Koran.

Blasphemy charges, even when they do go to court, are punishable by death in Muslim-majority Pakistan. They are hard to fight because the law does not define clearly what is blasphemous.

Even presenting the evidence in court can sometimes itself be considered a fresh infringement.

Pakistan’s minorities feel that the state fails to protect them, and even tolerates violence against them.

Last month, a British man with a history of mental health illness, sentenced to death for blasphemy this year, was shot and wounded by a prison guard in his cell.

Also in October, a Pakistani court upheld the death penalty against a Christian woman, Asia Bibi, who is also accused of blasphemy, in a case that drew global headlines after two prominent politicians who tried to help her were assassinated.

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

seriously ?

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Saw this today coming from Indian media and I seriously thought its just a fake news. People have literally gone crazy and out of their mind. And with no rule of law prevailing, the killer becomes hero and the victim remains the villain. SMH

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

What education level is required to enter the police force? There was another article saying that the victim had mental health issues?

This murderer should have a speedy trial and have a death sentence carried out.

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

This thing has a bad effect. More people read about it in pakistan.
More they going put them in one of the 2 groups. Minorities are going to think what the hell is this...
what is so wrong saying ... this .. that....
Other group is going to think "thats what we do when some one say bad things"

Its only going make such incident more probable. :(

such event/news have power to shape people further into.. this mentality

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Like i said before..do not expect for a behavioral change or people to act responsibly especially in a society where illiteracy is still >80%..people will continue to misuse the law.

We need to get rid of the law....

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Are you kidding me?

Our society is facing the issue at different fronts... one is mullah driving a mob to kill others, and in other incidences the law enforcement personnel are killing people accused/committing blasphemy. Its becoming a jungle out there :(

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Not really... we need to get rid of the mentality, law can sit there idle doing nothing.

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Agreed.. but how? You cannot force people to do that but the only way out I see is to crush religious fanatic and create a massive movement to create awareness that we all are supposed to respect human, regardless of religion, race or color which is the actual teaching of Islam.

Second, time after time such events prove there is no rule of law at all. And without it just forget about anything else

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Good ****ing god. Someone just stamp Pakistanis with an Idiot sign.

It will solve a lot of our issues. This is just pathetic and insane.

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

change mentality...sure absolutely but it will take a long time ..till then we shd simply let people misuse the law?

and law can simpley sit there? well why do you need such a law at first place

laadies and gentlemen, in a country where we have 98% Muslims, do we really need a Blasphemy law? yes if we had a sizable minority >20% I would have supported blasphemy law but .....

Why would any minority ever commit blasphemy in his/her right mind fully knowing his/her fate in a 98% Muslim majority country?

this is a complete harassment towards minorities... laws should be to protect minority not to protect 98% majority

What the freak :smack:

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

ONLY people who can change the midset is Ulema/Molvies. They dont seem much interested.

Pathetic and I am giving up hope. Even I am afraid of visiting Pakistan now. Many of my thoughts and things that I say can be rolled under blasphemy law

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

That is actually right...I have to be very careful in Pakistan as well. People will misunderstand you and in their mind if they kill you they are going to jannah.

Ulema are the biggest culprits who will emotionalize people in Friday semons to no end.

So why not get rid of the law? you admitting that ulema will not change, people will continue to misuse the law, and we are 98% muslim majority anyway...why do we need this law?

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Rrright we have enough desi 6choraray...

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Law is a problem but even bigger problem is that people do street justice. In both the cases people and police officer never let law take its course. So its the matter of changing mindset of people

once that is done, Law should be amended and there should be death (or at least life in prison) for wrongful accuser.

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

Blasphemy laws should be applied to these kind of deranged killers to have brought bad name to islam and its founder.

In their minds they may think they have restored the glory of islam by killing someone who spoke against it but in reality they are doing a bad publicity and making lives harder for people who teach that islam is religion of peace and forgiveness.

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

and who and how will you change mentality? you are admitting ulema will not do it ...so who will do it? till then innocents will keep dying

plus why would someone in his right mind commit blasphemy in a 98% majority country? can someone help me understand this.... if i am part of a 3% minority who is already harassed and sacred, why would i commit blasphemy knowingly?

if this law remains there in a 98% muslim majority country it will always be used for wrong reasons....regardless of mindset

Re: Pakistani police officer axes man to death over blasphemy

I am all for regularization of Imams of mosques. Every tom dick and henry becomes Imam now and without having any knowledge of Islam advises people of the area on different religious issues. In small villages and towns, Imam of the masjid is like next to Farishta and people blindly follow them. Govt has to do something to regulate the Imams.

and for wrong accusations, we need to modify the law ASAP. Wrong accuser should get life in prison

but again all this require WILL. Govt and politicians have no will either. Mumtaz Qadri has been sentenced to death. Does anyone has balls to hang him? NO. O bhai Politicans are such a chicken that top leadership of PPP (and other parties) did not even go to funeral of Salman Taseer.

To be fair, law is not asking them to kill people in the name of blasphemy. Unfortunately, in the mind of these sick people, they are following Allah ka qanoon, so govt changing or revoking any law is not going help.

We have to ask ourselves that Saudia has a similar law. Why is that it’s not been abused there in such a way? Why public does not take the law in their hands in that country?
