Kamran Akmal under investigation for match-fixing?

KARACHI: Pakistan’s wicket-keeper batsman Kamran could currently be under investigation for suspected match-fixing, well-placed sources told ‘The News’ on Thursday.

According to the sources, Kamran was axed from the Pakistan squad for the two Twenty20 Internationals against England in Dubai because there are suspicions that he might have deliberately dropped catches during the second Test in Sydney against Australia last month. If he fails to prove his innocence, Kamran may be overlooked for the ICC World Twenty20 Championship in the Caribbean where Pakistan will be looking to defend their title this May, said the source.

The 28-year-old was dropped from the third and final match of the series in Hobart for the first time in 42 Tests and five years but later returned for the limited-overs games against the Aussies. He smashed a 33-ball 64 in the tour-ending Twenty20 International at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but was still dropped from the touring party for the Dubai matches.

Officially, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said that Kamran was overlooked for the brief Dubai visit because of his poor showing in Australia as well as his statements after the Sydney Test in which he insisted he will play in Hobart in spite of the fact the PCB had rushed young glovesman Sarfaraz Ahmed to Australia for the final Test.

However, according to the source, the main reason why Kamran was left out of the Dubai series was because he is under investigation for suspected match-fixing.

“Otherwise how can you leave out a player who had scored 64 from 33 balls against Australia in his last match,” said the source. “He (Kamran) is a suspect.”

Kamran, who was Pakistan’s vice-captain in the Test series against Australia, came under intense fire for his pathetic showing behind the stumps in the Sydney Test which Pakistan lost by 36 runs. He dropped Mike Hussey three times in that Test allowing the veteran batter to score a match-winning hundred. The fumbling keeper also floored Peter Siddle besides wasting a run-out opportunity against Shane Watson and was later singled out as the biggest villain behind Pakistan’s defeat from a seemingly-winning position.

The menace of match-fixing is nothing new for Pakistan cricket.

Last October, National Assembly’s sports committee chief Jamshed Dast accused the Pakistan team of deliberately losing to Australia to knock old rivals India out of the Champions Trophy in South Africa. However, the committee later cleared the team of any wrongdoings.

Back in 2000, former Pakistan captain Salim Malik and medium pacer Ata-ur Rehman were found guilty of match-fixing by Justice Malik Qayyum. They were both banned for life following a year long investigation into the allegations.

The inquiry was launched in response to charges of betting and match-fixing against several of Pakistan’s top cricketers, including former captains Wasim and Malik, spinners Saqlain Mushtaq and Mushtaq Ahmed, Rehman and batsman Ijaz Ahmed.

The inquiry investigated several allegations of corruption dating back to 1994, including one made by Australian cricketers Shane Warne and Mark Waugh. The Australian players accused Malik of offering them bribes to perform poorly during an Australian tour of Pakistan.

In recent times, there have been calls from various quarters for the implementation of the recommendations made by Justice Qayyum to eradicate the menace of match-fixing from Pakistan cricket.

“Match-fixing is still the root cause of the problems faced by our cricket,” Senator Enver Baig told this correspondent. “It has to be tackled seriously otherwise there is no hope for Pakistan cricket,” added Baig, a former member of the Senate’s sports committee.

Some idiot thinks he has capability of dropping catches deliberately, Kamran Akmal should award that idiot with some serious money for making him such an expert keeper :hehe:

Now that is a reason Kamran should be penalised and kept away from the team for sometime (like an year or two for Tests and ODIs).

I think its the same idiot who spoke anonymously :hehe:

re: Pakistani players under investigation for match-fixing?

Do not know if this is true or not. Only time will tell, but I mentioned earlier in post that there is a concentrated effort to ax Kamran from the team to drop him for a while. It will surely happen.

give me a break. he's just in very, very poor form. he's not fixing matches.

re: Pakistani players under investigation for match-fixing?

I don't think he was involved in match-fixing either.

you should have seen AKmal's face when he was dropping all these catches. He was about to cry. If this was all an act then he should seriously consider his career in Lollywood.

re: Pakistani players under investigation for match-fixing?

^^ he cries in normal conditions as wel... just an emotional brat.

Dont know if this is true or not. Kamran does not deserve to be the team as a keeper any more. He can be a batsman though. I do think that he will bring more politic and tamasha to the team though. His brother should be investigatd as well for his alleged back injury which got rectified suddenly when he was told that he is being sent back to Pakistan.

I hope this news is true. Sadly I think this is the only way we can get rid of this loser for good. Otherwise we will keep seeing his manhoos face playing for Pakistan. I really don't mind him in t20's but he needs to stay a million miles away from any test match that Pakistan is playing

Kamran is such a pathetic keeper and going by his track record, I highly doubt he dropped those catches on purprose. Its actually more surprising when he holds onto to a catch.

if I were Kamran, I'd consider suing this reporter/newspaper. it's about time someone put an end to these kinds of accusations.

every other day some clown gets up and says that Wahab Riaz paid money to get into the team. then Qadir the genius that he is gets up and says that Rauf gets selected because of parchi even though the same Rauf was selected when Qadir himself was the chief selector. accused of killing their own coach by Sarfraz Nawaz. accused of matchfixing every time a catch is dropped. these wild accusations have to end. and members of the Pak team have to take action. take these people to court. make them back up what they say or make them shut up.

re: Pakistani players under investigation for match-fixing?

Shouldn't whole of PCB be under investigation?

re: Pakistani players under investigation for match-fixing?

in another RECENT development…this is getting serious

PCB handed match-fixing evidence by ICC | Pakistan Cricket News | Cricinfo.com

On a day of considerable confusion, the PCB said it had received evidence from the ICC regarding the involvement of Pakistan players in match-fixing. Initially, after a press conference in which Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, seemed to indicate the two players were from the current squad, he told Cricinfo that the cases, incidents and players involved were old ones.

More to follow

Chaloo jee nya drama sharooh…

This stupid moron Ijaz Butt is the biggest mistake in the history of Pakistan cricket. When he is not disclosing the name of any player then why there is a need for indicating all this in a press conference? Apparently the inquiry is still going on; just wait till it’s over and then reveal everything. Now everyone is going to point at every player in the team.

He is yet another attention wh0re.

re: Pakistani players under investigation for match-fixing?

That's interesting. We will have to wait til the investigation is over. Whoever it is must be sacked if found guilty.

Sacked and then after couple of years be made as coach of our national teams.

Read the complete one and you would like to smack Ijaz Butt.

re: Pakistani players under investigation for match-fixing?

The question is, why would anyone PAY Kamran Akmal to lose a match, when Kamran can do it free?

may be Kamran was out of form at that time and might have taken couple of catches successfully? :hmmm:

Re: Shoaib and Tanvir not in World Twenty20 squad

LAHORE: Chairman Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt has revealed that two Pakistani cricketers are involved in match-fixing and the International Cricket Council (ICC) has provided the evidence.

Ijaz Butt said that he cannot tell the names of these cricketers but they are not included in the present team.

Ijaz Butt was speaking at the press conference held here at the Gaddafi Stadium for announcing the names of 30 probable players for the Twenty20 World Cup.

However, when asked about the news regarding wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal’s involvement in match-fixing, Ijaz Butt first said that the final meeting of the committee, probing Pakistan’s embarrassing defeat on the tour of Australia, will be held in Lahore on Febraury 28 and he would make any comment after the report would come out and then the players included in the probable list may be dropped on recommendation of the enquiry committee.

Replying to further questions on match-fixing, the PCB chairman said he never said that the match-fixing is not done but it is difficult to prove it.

He said that he was amazed to see when the ICC provided the evidence.

When various questions were fired on him, he confirmed that not the officials but players are involved in matchc-fixing but they are not the part of the present team.

Ijaz Butt said that he would not mention the names of these players not event to the standing committees of sports.

However, he said that action has been taken against these players.

Another boomb shel on pakistani cricket fan…i wounder who are these two players? Might be Shoaib and Tanveer as they missing from world cup
