thanx Amir for selecting Faisalabad as the city of month or fortnight!
** Intorduction **
As Amir has already very aptly given the overview of this magnificent city but i would like to make a little correction here that it was 1977 that it was renamed as Faisalabad in honor of king Faisal from lyallpur nd its estimated population is almost 2 million people .

A 140 kms west of Lahore is Faisalabad. It is known as the Manchester of Pakistan because it is famous for its textile industry. The focal point of this city is Ghanta Ghar Bazaar which connects eight bazaars.

Faisalabad is connected with the rest of the country by air, road and rail.Faisalabad, formerly Lyallpur, city in north-east Pakistan, in the Rechna Doab region of the Punjab. A rail and road junction, the city lies in an area watered by the Lower Chenab Canal: cotton, wheat, vegetables, and fruit are all grown in the region. It is an industrial centre, having railway-repair shops, engineering works; and plants that mill cotton, sugar, flour, and oilseed, can fruit, and pack tea.

Faisalabad, Pakistan's flourishing industrial town and the home of cotton textiles, offers a vibrant, bustling scenario. With its shopping opportunities in textiles, leather, brassware and jewellry, Faisalabad's totally ethnic mood leaves much to be discovered. It is a city of rich and delicate architecture reflecting the exuberance of Punjab decorative arts and the Islamic heritage of the region. The streets are highly articulated in geometric patterns with angular street intersections, a profusion of balconies and suspended loggias, and hidden interior courtyards.

Before partition a small market town, Faisalabad is now Pakistan's main agro-industrial center and its third largest city with a population about 1.8 million. It was established around a clocktower built by the British, who named it Lyallpur, with eight bazaars leading out in the pattern of the Union flag. Renamed after King Faisal of Saudi Arabia, it's also known as Faisalabad. It is often referred to as the 'Manchester of Pakistan' due to its industrial setup. Mainly a business city, it now offers opportunities to study the rich Punjabi culture. Nearby, the town of Chiniot is also worth visiting for its famous woodwork and historical monuments. The garden city of Lahore, only 3 hours drive from Faisalabad, is famous for its moghul monuments and delightful cuisine.

** Educational Institutes **

Agriculture University Faisalabad:

The University of Agriculture is a Residential Academic Institution which has its rooting back to the Punjab Agriculture College which was founded in 1906. Since November 1st 1961 when the college was upgraded to University, this institute has carried the responsibilities of teaching, research, extension and short courses as major areas of its academics.
Today in the era of advanced technology for improving agriculture and related areas the University has groomed the width of its research activities according to the requirements of the modern world.

Being a premier central University with several faculties and constituent institutions it draws students from all over the world.
The beautiful University campus over an area of 1,950 acres on both angles represents history and the present era. The lush green new campus which is conglomeration of monolithic blocks built in modern style. The old campus a reminiscent of traditional Muslim architecture reminds of the Agriculture College, it now houses the Faculty of Sciences.
The University campus is located in the centre of the city at a distance of 12km. North-East of the Faisalabad International Airport, about 2km. South-West of the Faisalabad General Bus Stand and about 2km. North-West of the Faisalabad Railway Station and Government Transport Bus Stand.

** Punjab Medical College Faisalabad **

The emergence of two medical colleges i.e. Punjab Medical College and Rawalpindi Medical College simultaneously at the campus of University of Agriculture Faisalabad in 1973-74 was a historical event, by any stretch of imagination, in the annals of medical education. It sent a wave of happiness in the province. But with the unrestricted support and co-operation of the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, which accommodated both the medical colleges on its campus squeezing its own departmental facilities at considerable inconvenience, the growth of the two medical colleges would have been retarded and not reached the stage of development where they stand today. RMC was shifted to Rawalpindi on 5th November 1974.

With a grant from the government, the structure of new buildings was completed in 1982 enabling the college to shift to its new premises spread over an area of about 158 acres. The construction of buildings and furnishing of laboratories, teaching hospital etc., continued at a fair pace and by the end of the year a sum of 460 millions had been invested on the college. It is heartening that now the college has all the facilities and infrastructure, which a modern institution can aspire in a developing country.

The first batch of graduates with M.B.B.S degrees passed out in 1978 and as on today more than 3000 graduate doctors has been produced to meet the need of the community. They are all making their mark in the social milieu.

Punjab Medical College is one of medical colleges of Government of Punjab. College was established in 1973-74. Spread over on area of 158 acres, college has a beautiful campus. College has separate hostels for boys and girls. Hospitals have separate hostels for male and female doctors.

Allied Hospital and DHQ Hospitals are the two hospitals that are attached with the college for clinical teachings of the students.

** National College of Textile Engineering Faisalabad **

there r many colleges like Governament college Faisalabad, islamia college etc nd numerous school which r imparting quality education to the children of this city.

Faisalabad , A shopping heaven :

Faisalabad is rightly considered as the shopping heaven with its variety of shopping centres spreading all over the city. the most famous one is ofcourse the clock tower which has 8 bazars surrounding it (dont ask me the names of these eight bazars now :) , its never easy to remember those names nd specially when u r out ot touch ). these 8 bazars offer every kind of item u can think of, from textile items, shoes , books etc

D-Ground is fastly becoming the "liberty market" of Faisalabad with its modren outlook.

Sutiana bazar is n other place to go , if u want to have some quality shopping.

** Recreational Spots **

Faisalabad lacks in this area of recreational spots, Company bagh or Jinaah bagh as it is lately known stands alone to cater for the needs of denizen of this city. Faisalabad definitely needs more spots like that.
There is a funland for kids where they can go nd have fun with their parents.

Iqbal cricket stadium Faisalabad , one of the old nd famous stadiums of pakistan (because of its batting friendly pitch, its not among the favorites of the fast bowlers).
the area surrounding this stadium has developed into a very bustling shopping nd recreational centre. For kids, Sindbad offers some quality fun .
the newly builty Hockey stadium of faisalabad is the new attraction for the sports lovers.

** Hotels nd hangout places **
Serena Hotel is the only hotel that is worth mentioning here. it hosts most of the functions nd welcomes the visitors .
KFC has a branch in Faisalabad at D-Ground.
i guess there r three Mc Donalds in Faisalabad.
the lattest addition amont the multi national food chains is pizza hut.
nd dont forget there r numerous places where u can enjoy the traditional pakistani food.
so u wont find faisalabad lagging behind atleast in this area.

u want to go to faisalabad from Islamabad, it was never so easy nd comfortable as it is now because of Motorway . u can take Daewoo nd ur journey will be over in 3 :30 hrs nd even less if u use ur own transporation.it used to take almost 8hrs befor the motorway but now it takes even the half of that time.

i prefered lyallpur. it took us forever to learn to say Faisalabad.

like ny other city of pakistan , it has its own share of problems nd pollution , i guess, is on top of the list. u will find dust all over the place, smoke nd dust makes a unique combination :p ,it needs quite a bit of improvement in this area.
nd one more thing which can cause headache to the person who is visiting this place for the first time is its unorganized nd chaotic traffic. it can take its toll on u .
