Pakistan to send inspection team to clear India tour](Yahoo is part of the Yahoo family of brands.)

KARACHI (AFP) - The Pakistan Cricket Board is sending a two-member inspection team to India to clear venues for next month’s tour of India but it would not examine security, an official said.

“Basically it’s a venue assessment committee and the date of the team’s visit will be finalised only after the Indian Board confirms the venues of the three-match Test and five-match one-day series,” PCB spokesman Abbas Zaidi told AFP.

It will be Pakistan’s first full tour across the border since 1999 and follows the easing of political tensions between the two countries in 2003.

India lifted a ban on bilateral sporting relations in October 2003, which was followed in March-April 2004 by the first Indian cricket tour of Pakistan in 15 years.

Zaidi said that Lahore police official Sohail Khan and the PCB’s general manager of cricket operations Zakir Khan would go to India to check the facilities but denied it would assess security, as a three-member Indian delegation did before last year’s tour.

The two boards have already confirmed the match schedule for the tour and hope to agree on the venues later this week.

The two sides will play three Tests beginning on March 4, 12 and 20 followed by the one-day series which starts on March 28 and ends on April 9.

Pakistan’s 1999 tour was made possible despite threats from Hindu fundamentalist party Shiv Sena, who also dug up a pitch at Feroze Shah Kotal stadium. Pakistan played three Tests and featured in a tri-series one-day tournament.

Zaidi denied reports that Pakistan have already shown reservations about playing in Bombay and Ahmedabad over security fears.

“We have not set any pre-series conditions,” he added. “We have just requested the Indian board to schedule matches more at places close to Pakistani border like in Mohali and New Delhi.”

Pakistan leaves for India on February 25.

Re: Pakistan’s tour to India finalised…

here is some update on the venues:

** Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai unlikely to stage Pak matches… **

By our correspondent

KARACHI: Pakistan cricket authorities have been conveyed through unofficial channels about the venues for next month’s long-awaited Test tour of India and these don’t include major cities like Kolkata, Delhi or Mumbai.

Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said they had learnt that ** Mohali, Chennai and Bangalore would be discussed as the possible Test venues ** at the January 20th meeting of the Indian board’s venue-assessment committee in Mumbai.

** “The one-day venues we have learnt are Cochin, Vishakapatnam, Faridabad, Kanpur and Jamshedpur ** ,” he informed but made it clear that BCCI had not as yet officially confirmed the venues to Pakistan. “These are the venues we have learnt about through some channels and we don’t see any problems with playing at any of them,” he added.

A PCB official, when contacted, said if these were the venues being considered for the Test and one-day matches, he basically didn’t see any problems playing at them. “We will just have to get some assurances about the facilities at few of these smaller centres but otherwise they appear okay to us,” he stated.

He confirmed that as soon as BCCI confirmed the venues an inspection team including General Manager Cricket Operations Zakir Khan and security officer Sohail Ahmed would visit India to check the venues.

The official said if these were the venues eventually selected for the Pakistan team’s tour from February 27 to April 10, he would not be surprised as major centres like Kolkata and Mumbai had hosted international matches against South Africa, Australia and the BCCI Platinum Jubilee game against Pakistan earlier this season so the Indian board would be keen to give other centres a chance to host matches.

Pakistan would first be playing the three Tests, starting from March 4 —followed by five One-day Internationals.

According to sources there were private indications that BCCI had strongly taken into consideration the fact that Pakistan would face problems playing at some venues while shortlisting the venues for discussion at their January 20 meeting.

“They have also taken into consideration the fact that a Test and ODI should be held at venues like Mohali and Faridabad which are easily accessible to Pakistanis through the Wagah border,” the PCB official stated.

**Major cities could miss Pakistan **](BBC SPORT | Cricket | International Teams | India | Indian board confirms Test venues)

Major cities Mumbai (Bombay) and Calcutta are likely to miss out on hosting Pakistan’s tour of India.

“Test matches are scheduled for Mohali, Chennai (Madras) and Bangalore,” said a cricket board source.

“The one-day matches are scheduled for Kochin, Jamshedpur, Visakhapatnam, Kanpur and Faridabad.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India is set to announce a final itinerary for the tour, Pakistan’s first since 1999, on Thursday.

The two sides will play three Tests beginning on March 4, 12 and 20.

They will be followed by five one-dayers, the first on 28 March, and the tour will end on 9 April.

Mumbai’s exclusion is linked to security reasons as Hindu fundamentalist party Shiv Sena has voiced its opposition Pakistan playing there.

**But Calcutta’s omission can only be linked to Pakistan’s three one-day victories there in 1987, 1989 and last year. ** :hehe:

“We had not set any pre-series conditions of not playing in any city,” said Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Abbas Zaidi.

“But we have to get the clearance on all cities once the venues are officially announced.”

Sources in the PCB said they would consider playing in Mumbai because they don’t want to deprive the city of a high profile match.

Mumbai did not host any matches on Pakistan’s last tour in 1999, after death threats from Shiv Sena, whose activists also dug up the pitch.

But former Pakistan great Javed Miandad, team coach on that tour, backed Mumbai as venue.

“I met Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackery last year and he had no objection of Pakistan team playing in Mumbai,” he said.

Pakistan is sending a venue inspection committee comprising police official Sohail Khan and PCB official Zakir Khan to India next week.

“Basically, it’s a venue inspection team and not a security assessment team,” said the spokesman.

“We know when both the governments are involved there will be top security.”

** Delhi to host ODI against Pak… **

[PTI ]

MUMBAI, Jan 20: ** Mohali, Ahmedabad and Bangalore would host India’s three Test matches ** against Pakistan next month, the Cricket Board announced on Thursday.

BCCI’s Programmes and Fixtures Committee, chaired by BCCI vice-president Kamal Morarka, also selected ** Kochi, Vishakhapatnam, Kanpur, Jamshedpur and Delhi as the venues for the five one-day internationals ** to be played after the Test series.

“The venues will now have to be cleared by the Indian Government and the dates would be finalised soon,” BCCI Secretary S K Nair and Morarka told reporters here on Thursday.

Morarka said the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will send their security team to India on January 25 to inspect the venues while the Pakistan cricket team would arrive either on February 24 or 25 for the tour expected to last till April 10 or 11.

Apart from the three Test matches and five one-dayers, the visitors will also play a three-day game at Dharmashala in Himachal Pradesh and a one-day practice game in between the Test series and the one-day series.

The venues and dates of the warm-up matches would be finalised later, Nair said.

Others who attended the meeting included Joint Secretary Gautam Dasgupta, Treasurer Jyoti Bajpai, the five zonal representatives - M P Pandove (North/Punjab), Dayanand Narvekar (South/Goa), Vikas Barua (East/Assam), Hitesh Patel, (West/Gujarat), Prakash Dixit (Central/Vidarbha). Special invitee Ratnakar Shetty (Mumbai) also attended the meeting.

Both Morarka and Nair said the committee strictly adhered to the rotation policy of the Board in choosing the venues.

“We now intend to intimate the Home Ministry and Sports Ministry immediately about these venues for their approval since any India-Pakistan series is a special one needing the government’s green signal. We expect to get a reply very soon,” they said.

Nair said the dates were yet to be finalised as there might be minor changes depending upon the logistics of the teams’ travel from one centre to another.

“It will be done in consultation with the Pakistan Cricket Board,” Nair said.

“The three-day warm-up match would involve the Board President’s XI and the visiting Pakistan team. The modalities of the one-day match would be discussed with the PCB before the dates and venues are finalised,” Nair said.

Asked about Delhi, Morarka said Ferozshah Kotla ground’s renovation work was in full swing and the Delhi and District Cricket Association were confident of hosting the fifth and final ODI there.

All the ODIs would be day affairs, it has already been decided.

Morarka said the Indian Board was keen that the Pakistan team is accorded the best reception when they visit the country.

Re: Pakistan’s tour to India finalised…

should we play in Ahmedabad or not???

** Ahmedabad’s selection as Test venue for Pak series stumps PCB… **

By Waheed Khan

KARACHI: Pakistan cricket authorities were taken by surprise with the selection of Ahmedabad as one of the Test venues for their forthcoming tour of India.

“I would say we are surprised with this selection of the Indian board knowing well the background of this venue. But right now it would not be politically correct for us to make any comments on Ahmedabad’s selection,” a senior Pakistan board official said on the condition of anonymity.

** He made it clear that obviously Chairman Shaharyar Khan was not very happy with the inclusion of Ahmedabad in the list of Test venues and would talk privately to Indian board officials after the PCB offices reopen after Eid.**

Ahmedabad is the major city in the western state of Gujarat where at least 2,000 people, mostly Muslims, were hacked, burnt or shot to death in anti-Muslim riots following the death of 59 Hindus in a train carriage fire blamed by state authorities on a Muslim mob.

An Indian government commission earlier this week announced the fire in the train carriage had been the result of an accident.

Even when Pakistan played at this venue in 1987 Imran Khan’s men had faced crowd problems in a Test match. However, officially PCB’s Director for media/protocol/pr Abbas Zaidi said India had only announced proposed venues and these were not final so there was no need to react.

“These are proposed venues and we are sending a venue’s assessment team to India on January 24 and which will visit all the proposed venues and meet with Indian cricket and security officials,” he added.

The Pakistan board’s general manager cricket operations Zakir Khan and a high ranking police official Sohail Ahmed are on the committee. “We will send our remarks to the Indian board on the basis of the recommendations of this committee,” Zaidi said.

The Indian board on Wednesday proposed Mohali, Ahmedabad and Bangalore as the venues for the three Tests and Cochin, Vishakapatnam, Kanpur, Jamshedpur and Delhi as the One-day international centres.

The three Tests are scheduled to be played from March 4, 12 and 20 followed by the five one-day internationals which end on April 9. Pakistan will be touring India for the first time since early 1999.

Zaidi also made it clear that Pakistan had not requested for the exclusion of Mumbai from their tour itinerary. The Indian board ignored Mumbai and Kolkatta, two major test venues for the Pakistan tour.

“I think the Indian board has decided on the venues on rotation basis we certainly had not said anything to them about not playing in Mumbai,” Zaidi insisted. Pakistan also didn’t play in the metropolitan city in 1999 after threats from the Hindu nationalist party Shiv Sena to disrupt the tour.

Shiv Sena activists had also dug up the pitch at Delhi’s Feroze Shah Kotla ground to protest over Pakistan’s visit and they were also threats made that snakes would be let loose by them during the test match at the ground.

However the PCB official privately said that Pakistan had infact discussed playing at Mumbai in board meetings and there was a consensus to play in Mumbai this time if the Indian board had included it in the list of venues for the tour.

“The feeling was that why should Pakistan miss out at playing at major test venues like Mumbai if the Indian board was willing to guarantee all security arrangements for us.” The Indian team last year toured Pakistan for a full series in March-April which also led to a major thaw in the relations between the two countries with increased people to people and government contacts.

Shiv Sena playing the Hindutva card…

** PCB unaffected by Shiv Sena threats **

January 23, 2005 20:01 IST

Threats from radical Hindu groups to disrupt Pakistan’s Test series in India later this year will not derail the tour, Pakistan’s top cricket official said on Sunday.

Activists of the radical Hindu party, Shiv Sena, have said they would attempt to disrupt the one-day match in Delhi in protest at Pakistan touring India for a full Test series for the first time since early 1999.

“We have full confidence in the Indian board to look after the security and other arrangements for our team. We are not going to be affected by such threats,” said Shaharyar Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.

On the 1999 tour, Shiv Sena activists dug up a pitch at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground in Delhi in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a Test match taking place.

“We will not allow the one day cricket match in Delhi at any cost,” said Shiv Sena’s local unit president Jai Bhagwan Goyal was quoted as saying by the Indian Express on Friday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Thursday announced Mohali, Ahmedabad and Bangalore as the Test venues and Cochin, Vishakapatnam, Delhi, Kanpur and Jamshedpur as the one-day venues for the February 25-April 9 tour.

Khan said the board would give its response on the proposed venues, which India had announced as provisional, after a visit of a Pakistani security team there from January 24 to 29.

“These are proposed venues and there is always a process of dialogue between countries,” he said. “When India visited Pakistan we took everything into consideration before finalising the venues.”

Re: Pakistan’s tour to India finalised…

Pakistan will loose all vital matches to make any impact on the series results.
So Pak-Fans must chill, and let this one also go to the Indians,we have to sort out some
team selection problems before stepping into this arena. :smooth::k:
or any arena for that matter :k:

Tendulkar doubtful for Pakistan series

Due to his chronic ‘tennis elbow condition’ he has confessed that he might not be playing unless he takes six week strict rest.

Tendonitis problem cannot be taken care of in 6 weeks . It is almost a permanent condition.

'Croton injections can take out the pain for up to 8 months with 1 injection,
but cannot cure the rupture of tendem.. I know this cause I have it, but under control,
One may have up to 3 ‘crotons’ maximum for one injury @ 1 croton a year.
After wards surgery become the only option.

Pakistan might not gain from his absence, because Mr. Tandulker has been quite

Subdued against Pakistan in the past year, :elmo::k:

He was not a big threat for us anyways. We need to find solution for Sehwag, Dravid and Yuvi. I hope Denish will shine this time along with Shabbir.
