Pakistan have won Azlan Shah Cup 2003](http://www.phf.com.pk/news_detail.php?ID=296)
30th March 2003,IPOH:Pakistan beat world and defending champions Germany 1-0 in a nail biting final to clinch the 12th edition of the Azlan Shah hockey tournament played here in Ipoh on Sunday before a jam packed crowd of true hockey enthusiasts.
The first half remained goal less with Pakistan getting three short corners but all appreciation to the seasoned German custodian Clemens Arnold who foiled all Sohail Abba’s attempts that later helped him to adjudged the best player of the final. Germany also could not capitalize on two short corners in the first half.
Germany got their 3rd and Pakistan fourth short corner of the match in 17th and 21st minute but it was not the day to score on short corners. Some wonderful attacks, counter attacks and breathtaking moves from both sides thrilled the crowd and kept them on their toes.
It was in 22nd minute when Rehan Butt hit a perfect cross from right side towards Khalid Salim who rolled the ball to the man with the electrifying heels, Shabbir Hussain who flicked the ball into the net to score the winner for Pakistan. The good and positive sign for Pakistan was that they maintained their cool and stood the pressure to defend the lone goal lead till end of the play. Pakistan’s Sohail Abbas was declared best player of the tournament by remaining top scorer with five goals.
The PHF secretary Brig. Musarrt Ullah Khan, chairman selection committee Akhtar Rasool, team manager Shahid Jaffry and coach Shahnaz shakih were happy and all praise for their team’s morale booster win over the world champions Germany who had beaten Pakistan earlier in the league match 4-3. The win should work as tonic to boost morale following the poor show in the last year’s Asian Games 2002 in Busan, Korea.
Earlier in the day, New Zealand team after trailing behind 2-1 at one stage came from behind to beat the Asian Games gold medallist South Korea in a hard fought battle by 3-2 to clinch the 3rd slot in the event. South Koreans who have made 14 changes to their team that won the Asian Games gold medal last year in Busan, could not hold on to the lead taken in the first half.
The Kiwis were first to score on penalty stroke through Hayden Shaw in 8th minute that was equalized by Lee Jung Seon on short corner a minute later. Lee was again on target in 17th minute when he again sounded the board to put Korea 2-1 ahead on penalty corner that lasted till half time.
The New Zealanders came back with equalizer when unmarked Philip Burros scored a brilliant goal with a powerful reverse shot in 44th minute. Although Korean tried hard y to regain the control of the game, it was the Kiwis who were more impressive in their moves and one of them bore fruit when Hari Bevan tapped the ball into the net on the left of the Korean goalie to take the 3-2 lead in 66th minute on an indirect short corner drill that sealed the victory and bronze medal for the Kiwis.

Shabbir’s Goal Helps Pakistan To Win Sultan Azlan Shah Tourney
IPOH, March 30 (Bernama) – Shabbir Hussain scored the only goal of the game enroute to Pakistan’s triumph over defending champions Germany in the final of the 12th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament here Sunday.
**After a goalless first half, Shabbir made no mistake in converting the best chance he got in the game to help Pakistan, champions here in 2000, to beat world champions Germany at the Azlan Shah Stadium. **
Both teams produced a scintillating show and created numerous goalmouth chances but Pakistan were the luckier side. Today’s win was also sweet revenge for Pakistan as they had lost to Germany 3-4 in a preliminary match last Sunday.
**After 10 minutes, Christopher Zeller made a solo effort and weaved his way past several Pakistani defenders before cracking a shot which was denied by Pakistani goalkeeper, Ahmed Alam.
A minute later Ahmed blocked Max Landshut’s penalty corner attempt.
Ahmed again proved to be a stumbling block to the Germans a minute later and this time he stopped an attempt by Phillpp Zeller. **
Pakistan then switched into attack mode but Germany goalkeeper, Clemens Arnold, denied them four consecutive times within a space of minutes. Out of the four attempts, three were from penalty corner hits.
Zeller got the best chance to open the scoring in the 24th minute when he only needed to beat Ahmed but his shot went wide.
Despite the fast attacking game from both teams and several golden opportunities to score, tight defensive play by the defenders at the opposite ends forced the match to remain goalless in the first half.
After the breather, both sides maintained their trademark good passing and tight marking play.
**However a lapse of concentration among the German defenders in the 62nd minute saw Shabbir saw beating Arnold. **
Germany tried desperately to get the equaliser and the Pakistani defenders managed to narrow down any scoring range which became available to the Germans. The game ended with victory going to Pakistan.
**Pakistan also received the Fairplay Award and their penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas was named as Player Of The Tournament. :k: :k:
Germany’s Christoper Zeller was named as the tournament’s Most Promising Player in the tournament while teammate Clemens Arnold, the Man Of The Match. **
The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Azlan Shah, gave away the medals and trophy.
For 3rd position, South Korea defeated Kiwis by 3-2.

Shenaz Shaikh was one of the best player Pakistan had during the 70's. I am sure he will be upset if he knew he was being called a woman. :)
