Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

I am worried for Pakistan now. This was a game we really could not afford to lose. Looking at the other teams in the super eight round, they are all either as good as or (many of them) even better than WI. Afridi's return should boost the late middle order but then the quality of opposition in the super-eight is also likely to get better and better with Pakistan meeting Australia and India on April 13 and 15 respectively. 242 should have been manageable. While Inzi and Yousuf were building that partnership, things were looking good but then Yousuf got carried away with all the cheering in the back ground as Pakistan approached 100 and threw his wicket away. Infact both Y's got out to irresponsible shots. Inzi tried his best but was out LBW again (his nemesis lately). Younis Khan esp. should have known better after that early dismissal of Imran Nazir

This defeat leaves us having to win 4 or 5 of our 6 super-eight games, a tall order (even if we had Akhtar, Asif and Razzaq playing) certainly.

I think Pakistan have little option but to play both Azhar and Afridi (after the next game) in order to strengthen their batting.

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

Inzi is one of bigger stars, not biggest stars pak ever had. The "only" biggest stars or "superstars" were the following

  1. Imran Khan
  2. Javed Miandad
  3. Wasim Akram
  4. Waqar Younus
  5. Hanif Mohd
  6. Zaheer Abbas

I don't think anyone else qualifies. Inzi, Saeed Anwar etc make up the 2nd tier

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

Rather than playing 6 or 7 mediocre bowlers, I would play only 5 bowlers and ensure that we bat deep (till 8 or 9 atleast). Let's not kid ourselves, we do not have the bowlers who could win us matches in this tournament. Our only hope is to score big and then try and defend with our limited bowling resources. And batting depth will definitely come in handy against the likes of Australia and India since we might be chasing even bigger totals (300+) against them!

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

Agreed (and I am not basing my judgement on the result of today's match). I have said many times on KK that IMO, Miandad was a superior batsman than both Inzi and Yousuf and **most definitely a better finisher in ODIs **than those two. Inzi has done nothing of note in the three world cups since 1992 (ok he did score 50s in group matches against Australia and NZ in 1999 but did n't do much from super-six onwards)

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

I agree with the names on your list except for Hanif (a good test player but being too slow and orthodox like Gavaskar would most likely have struggled in the one-day format) and Zaheer. Inzi is perhaps atleast as good as if not better than Zaheer in ODIs and a better test batsman than the latter.

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

Well ....my predictions turned out to be pretty darned accurate.

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

So you think that there are no big stars of this generation in the pakistani team o...

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

Meanwhile, I am wondering if it is okay to open a thread for Pak-Ireland match now. It is just 4 days away.

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

*The only consolation I can take from this loss is this; if this is supposed to be a fairy tale world cup for Pakistan, this is just about the right start. The hero never kills the dragon at first attempt (Although on current form, I don't know how the hell will the hero kill this dragon and bring the fairy tale to completion :o ).

P.S: Semi finals look really, really hard at this stage. Bas India ko harana zaroori hai ab.*

Re: Pakistan vs West Indies - March 13 Sabina Park, Jamaica

unfortunately india is going all the way!
