Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

Sangakkara, Vaas and Murali to miss Abu Dhabi series

The three-match one-day international series between Sri Lanka and Pakistan will take place in Abu Dhabi between May 18 and 22. Sri Lanka, however, will be missing Muttiah Muralitharan, Chaminda Vaas and Kumar Sangakkara who have county commitments in England.

K Mathivanan, the Sri Lanka Cricket secretary, said he had received confirmation that the series would be played from May 18-22 and that Sri Lanka would receive US$ 750,000 as participation fees from the Abu Dhabi Cricket Council (ADCC) who have organised the matches. He said Sri Lanka would leave for Abu Dhabi on May 15 and the matches would take place on May 18, 20 and 22.

The series was originally slated to begin on May 9 but Sri Lanka sought a postponement after they qualified for the World Cup final against Australia and were later stranded in London without a connecting flight to Colombo following the cancellation of flights to the capital due to air raids conducted by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The team eventually arrived in Colombo on May 3.

will it be shown on dish network?

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

This is really a win-win for Sri Lanka.

  • If they loose the series: "Our strongest players were not available."
  • If they win the series: "Our teamwork was so strong, we don't rely on superstars only, blabla"

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

^ You are right.
However, resting key strike bowlers and a middle order bat may provide Malik's 11 a chance to win the series. Lankans should be be riding an effervescent high and given the right pressure by the Paks in the field, could succumb to it.

Pakistan has just selected the same old lot - barring Fawad Alam and Najaf Shah. Sallu's claims about taking a lot of juniors turned out to be the usual Sallu B.S.

Pakistan Announce 16 man squad. Although we can’t expect a new young Captain to be given a 50% new squad and then tell him to prove himself, however, I think Hafeez, and Rao should have atleast been replaced with Abdul Rehman and Anwar Ali or some one like that. A tad bit dissappointing.

Only two new faces emerged in Pakistan’s first squad after the World Cup, as a new selection committee announced 16 names for the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi.
Fawad Alam, the young Karachi allrounder, who had such an outstanding domestic season, has expectedly taken his place in the squad. And Najaf Shah, a left-arm fast medium bowler who plays for PIA and Rawalpindi, has also been called up after an impressive domestic season and some equally impressive performances in the trial matches played between the 39 probables that attended the recent camp at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
Shoaib Malik, who will be captaining Pakistan for the first time in the series, stressed that these were the best players available. “These are all deserving players and it is the best team available to us. The selection committee discussed the names with me and the decision was taken between us.”
A vice-captain for the squad is to be announced later in the afternoon and it is widely believed that Mohammad Asif, back after missing the World Cup, will be named. Shahid Afridi’s name has also come up in discussion for the post.
Kamran Akmal, for the time being, retains his place as the leading wicketkeeper in the land. Without an understudy in sight, the move is seen as a vote of confidence in him by a new, empowered selection committee.
Opener Salman Butt has also made a comeback into the squad, having been dropped after a disappointing tour to England last year. Talat Ali, recently appointed manager of the team for two years, will also be the acting coach for the three-match series.
Pakistan are without Younis Khan and Shoaib Akhtar, the former currently turning out for Yorkshire and the latter not fully fit yet.

Squad
Shoaib Malik (capt), Salman Butt, Imran Nazir, Mohammad Hafeez, Yasir Hameed, Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, Fawad Alam, Kamran Akmal (wk), Abdul Razzaq, Mohammad Asif, Mohammad Sami, Umar Gul, Rao Iftikhar, Najaf Shah.

Only positive points are inclusions of Salman Butt and Fawad Alam. Rest is usual despite all the tall claims.

jang confirms it too....
says it was a unanimous decision by the ad hoc committee....

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

Good move to make Asif VC. Let's hope the team can perform under the new leadership.

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

AGAIN!!! Hafeez, Sami & Akmal - What have we learned?

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

^ If Malik means business, then he won't play Sami and Hafeez.

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

I think Hafeez has some contacts in the PCB....because even Sallu isent stupid enough to think he should be in team based on performance. If they think a guy who averages 18 in ODIS deserves to be in the squad..then God help Pakistan.

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

Why would they pick the same bunch that disappointed us in the World Cup? Hasan Raza and Asim kamal should have been selected.

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

Asim Kamal got sick in the Camp and was thus unfit during fitness test. Hasan Raza only showed some form in the Pentangular cup.

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

True, true, true... why is Hafeez still there?

It's good to see Yasir Hameed recalled though...

I Don't mind Sami or Akmal either. Akmal should be given one last chance to prove that he's capabel of keeping wicket for Pakistan and Sami... well he bowled his heart out at the world cup. Deserves another chance.

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

Oh...that's suck but they should have selected Hasan Raza. We need new blood in the team. The bowling line up with Asif, Gul, Sami and Rao are lethal enough to take out the oppostion. I am worried about batsmen. Hafeez, Nazir and Afridi are liability. When you have Razzaq and Malik, the quota of allrounders is finished. Let's see how Butt and Hameed will perform. I am afraid Yousuf and Malik will be doing most of the batting.

Re: Pakistan vs Srilanka - 3 ODI series in Abu Dhabi - May 18, 20, and 22

Even though Hafeez is in the squad but i dount that he will be given any game.
