Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

First of all Congratulation to England for a series victory.

I am not sad as a Pakistani fan for the loss of the series. Yes, loosing against England in England after ’82 is a sad memory but the way team has performed in last 2 years is very admirable. In addition, this was not our full-strength squad. Let England rejoice on this, they have been miserable for last 2 years. There have been positive things in the series, mainly Yousuf and Younis stamping their presence as the middle order we can rely on. I was worried who will take care of the game if Inzamam left but it seems we are in very good hands. Also, let me say that Younis Khan will make a great captain. He can indeed help the team with his bat. It is time Inzamam start handing the job to Younis, he will make an aggressive and visionary captain.

In addition, emergence of Umer Gul, return of Nazir and Mohammad Sami gaining his confidence is superb, we defiantly have good bowlers to choose.

To give credit for the series win, primarily let us start with our fielders and the dollies they dropped. Umpires and their 20/20 vision and last but defiantly not least our beloved openers who kept on pressuring the middle order. We definatly need to fix some departments but no need to push the panic button.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

To me the biggest positive has been the emergence of Younis not only as a superb leading batsmen but also as a good potential future captain. He used the available resources very well yesterday.

Umer Gul and Nazir are teh other positives.

Biggest disappointment Sami and Butt.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

The way the bowlers battled and improved with every game, despite umpiring and fielders against them.

Except for that, this has been one of the most dismal tours ever. If it was against Australia down under, at least there would have been the consolation of losing to the superior side. This English team are hardly world beaters, Sri Lanka proved that.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Biggest Positive: Salman Butt's career ends.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

There are not many positives so far. The only positive will be shown when the next series Pakistan play in and the culprits are dropped.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Big positives:

-- We can finally get rid of Salman Butt, Imran Farhat, and Taufeeq Umer, ALL AT THE SAME TIME, without anyone protesting against it (except Amir Sohail), hopefully.

-- We realize how valueable Shoaib Malik has been as an opener to us, as compared to these so called 'specialist openers."

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

I am disappointed with Sami and Butt too but in very different ways. Salman Butt, Imran Farhat and Umer proved that they are not specialist openers, too many chances given to them and it is time for their replacement. Mohammad Sami along with Gul and Nazir were replacements. They never meant to start or even in contention for the series. Injuries to our prime bowlers called for their inclusion, unlike Butt, Farhat and Umer who are spoiling needlessly. Sami even tried, while Butt and Farhat kept given away their wickets. It was pathetic to say the least.

I think Sami along with Gul and Nazir did spark a collapse in First and Third test but the fielders and umpires made it impossible for them. I am not mad at them like our openers who ruined the series for us.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Exactly, the bulk of blame lies on the batsmen and then the fielders.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Surely the positives will be dropping some free loaders.
I think another positve is Younis proving his value as a key batsman and future captain. His captaincy impressed everyone yesterday.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Don’t bet on it. If we had such a logical selection policy, then those free loaders wouldn’t have been around for so long.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

I guess, Younis and Shoaib Malik can be reliable for opening the test matches.
While Afridi and Shoaib Malik can be for ODI.
Yes, surely make Butt & Farhat need to practice or something - at the moment not good enough for an International team

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Biggest positive, danish Smashed a six.He has become an All Rounder now.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

If Duncan Fletcher is so concerned about Monty fielding and batting, despite his good form with ball so early in the career, guess how he would have tolerated Kaneria fielding and batting if he was Pakistan coach.

What a sham! why Salman Butt is so slow in fielding and running between the wicket despite being so young. Is it Butt part of his name that slow him down?

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

younis khan get to the 3rd spot in icc player rankings with moyo at 4... inzi's at 7.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Ok now opening has always been Pakistans problem...Shoiab Malik will be brought in when he gets fit...but who realistically is going to be the second opener...

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Pakistani bowlers did bowled well in patches. specially the 4th day of the 3rd test.. Pakistani bowlers definitely lack support from the captain and the fielders..
I remember those days when Imran used to go Wasim and Waqar after ever ball to guide them and cheer them.. It was Younis who brought some spirit in the team on 4th day.

Its a big positive sign for Pakistani team that Younis is taking over well. He cheered his bowlers, which lead them to bowl better. But he was unable to make fielders to do good. ( fielders are dumb right from the word go). Inzi should start packing his bags soon after the WC. Even I would say that Younis shoul dbe the captain of the WC.

Anyhow, what positive is Younis, Yousuf and to some exten Gul,, rest was a complete failure. Inzi failed to inspire anyone, rightly pointed out by Imran Khan as well.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

The positives are the ascent of Yousuf and Younis Khan as world class batsmen along with Inzamam. Mohammad Yousuf is one of the best touch players in international cricket and Younis Khan probably has the best defensive technique amongst our batsmen.

323 was always going to be tough on a 5th day Headingley pitch (It's a big ask anywhere against any team) but I was hoping that they would keep the series alive by not losing this game.

It was disappointing to see Pakistan collapse and hand the series to England and thus lose their proud record of remaining unbeaten in England since 1987.
The turning point in this game for me was those mad 5 minutes just before tea on the third day when Pakistan were cruising along at 447-3 and looking to build an advantage of 125-150 runs over England. Younis Khan was batting like a champion and looking in no trouble against any of the English bowlers. That did not happen mainly because of Inzi's stupidity when he needlessly called Younis for a tight run just before tea. That proved costly. Inzi should have known better that any team can collapse under pressure on a 5th day pitch, so it was vital that Pakistan made hay while the sun shone on them
Had we taken a healthy first innings lead and held our catches in the test, we might have made Hair irrelevant. At the very least it would have ensured a draw.

I now even wish that they had n't bowled England out on the 4th day and just concentrated on keeping the scoring rate down because all it did was make England's job easier. Knowing how conservative and traditional they are, Strauss would probably have carried on batting on the 5th morning and not declared until he had a lead of 350+

It's been a combination of poor fielding (we are probably the worst team in the world in that regard), depleted bowling and above all shocking umpiring decisions that have put us in the mess that we find ourselves in. One or two plumb LBWS/Clear edges not given out by the umpires could be excused but when there are so many bad decisions favouring one side more than the other, it calls into question the impartiality of the umpires.

I am not one to blame the umpires for defeat but I believe that I am not in minority here when I say that Both Hair and Doctrove were very poor in this game and their umpiring left a lot to be desired. The ICC needs to take a serious look at their umpiring credentials and both of them perhaps should not be on the elite panel.

The openers have been too flashy and reckless and have been found out in this series and unfortunately the tail was too long with both Razzaq and Afridi (albeit both deserved to be dropped) not playing at Leeds

Faisal needs some serious coaching from his legendary Uncle Javed Miandad on how to handle short-pitched bowling and Yasir Hameed deserves another chance in the next series. Hopefully he and Malik can be the answer to Pakistan's longstanding opening vow (with Butt/Taufeeq/Farhat as reserves)

This series result is another blemish on Woolmer's career as Pakistan coach. Although successive victories over India and England at home and against SLA in SLA are commendable, people like Miandad would argue that Pakistan under Woolmer have been found out in the two really testing series (0-3 loss to Australia in 2004 and England in 2006, 0-2 down could easily become 0-3). What's more even the fielding remains as bad as it has ever been

I just hope that they finish on a high note at the Oval. The series may be already lost but 1-2 is any day better than 0-2 or 0-3.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

Positives:

  • Inzi's lacklustre Captiancy exposed
  • Return of Shahid Nazir, demonstrating talent can overcome all odds
  • Yunus Khan's batting and leadership
  • Moyo's consistent form

We need a second wicket-keeper, Akmal had a horrible time behind the stumps. According to Bobby he found the swinging ball difficult to manage, wtf was that? If a wk cannot adapt according to the conditions then he does not deserve to be in the side as a wk.

Our openers have done such a terrific job that Shoaib Maliks mediocre record as an opener seems like th ebest thing possible for Pakistan. Take out Maliks ONE test match hundred (148 n.o.) and see his average, its the same as the others, and what makes us believe he wud hv been any different on English pitches? Pakistan has to stick with specialists for test matches, Malik is a cloned opener not a natural.

Finally, what happened to Jonty Rhodes fielding lessons? What kinda balls was he throwing to our players? Its simply pathetic.

Re: Pakistan V England 2006 Test Series: The Positives

^What about Malik's run a ball century in the side match where other openers struggled to get to fifty.
