Pakistan to discuss F-16 fighters from the US?

Interesting news…and quite significant if true. The Indian’s are not happy at all it seems, but that is to be expected.

Talks with Washington on F-16 deal to reopen

The United States and Pakistan are working on a deal for reviving the sale of F-16 jetfighters to Pakistan blocked more than 12 years ago following a dispute over Islamabad’s nuclear programme , a US journal, Defence and Foreign Affairs, reported on Wednesday. Pakistan, however, would be getting new Lockheed Martin F-16 fighters instead of the old ones it bid for in the original deal negotiated in the late 1980s, the report said. The deal will be announced later this month when President Pervez Musharraf visits Washington next week, said the report quoting highly-placed Washington sources. But US sources told Dawn that the deal would not be discussed during the President’s visit which begins on June 24. It will be discussed in the third meeting of the joint US-Pakistan Defence Consultative in Washington later this summer, the sources said. he council, formed after the Sept 11, 2001, terrorists attack in the United States, had already held two meetings in Islamabad and Washington. ***The Defence and Foreign Affairs said that the US administration had already informed India of its decision to sell F-16 aircraft to Pakistan. During his recent visit to Washington, Indian Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani received the “disappointing” news from US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, the report said. Significantly, Mr Rumsfeld broke the news of the intended sale in a special, and very private, meeting with Mr Advani at the Willard Hotel, in Washington, on June 8. The meeting was highly unusual in that Mr Rumsfeld wanted to tell Mr Advani personally of the proposed sale to Pakistan, in order to avoid the news reaching the Indian government through less formal channels." It said Indians were clearly unhappy at the news, but, given the requirement of maintaining good relations with Washington, they did not leak the news to the media. ***

Meanwhile, diplomatic sources told Dawn that the negotiations for reviving the F-16 deal reflect the recognition of Pakistan’s support to the US-led war on terror. Policy makers in Washington, the sources said, believed that several recent developments had increased Pakistan’s position as a key member of the US-led coalition war against terror. In Iraq, the sources said, an ever-increasing resistance to the US presence had also enhanced America’s desire to bring in troops from allied Muslim states like Pakistan to police the troubled Arab country. In Afghanistan, the Taliban and pro-al-Qaeda elements also have increased attacks on US and Afghan government forces. This has led to a realization in Washington that they need to make some sort of arrangement with the lower cadres of the Taliban leadership and other Pakhtun factions opposed to the Hamid Karzai government, the sources said. President Karzai also has appealed to these elements to cooperate with his government, announcing that he was ready to make a deal with those Taliban workers and supporters who were not directly involved in terrorism.

It appears that Donald Rumsfiled ‘himself’ told Advani of the US’s decision to the ‘possible’ sale of F16’s. ?

I really would not hold my breath. If Pakistan gets the F16’s, fine. If not, no big deal. It’s not as if the Indians will ever start their ‘Decisive Battle’ against Pakistan. :hehe:

US shoots down rumours on sale of F-16s to Pak
CHIDANAND RAJGHATTA

TIMES NEWS NETWORK WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 2003 09:07:55 PM ]

WASHINGTON: The Bush Administration on Wednesday shot down reports that it intended to resume supply of F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan, and that it would make an announcement to that effect during military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s visit to Washington next week.

Pentagon, State Department and Indian Embassy officials variously described the reports as “incorrect” and “totally false.”

The bogey was resurrected by a little-known newsletter called Defence and Foreign Affairs Daily. Citing “highly placed Washington sources,” it reported on June 13 that the US Government is preparing to announce sale of new Lockheed Martin F-16 fighters to the Pakistan Air Force.
Both US administration sources and Indian officials sounded mystified by the report and dismissed it.

“The (Defence) Secretary did not say that,” Pentagon spokesperson Diane Perry said, while declining to elaborate what was discussed between the two.

“We’re kinda scratching our heads about it. It’s a strange story. I have nothing to confirm it,” a state department said. A senior Indian diplomat privy to the Rumsfeld-Advani meeting described the story as “totally false.”

The story that Advani knew it but didn't mention it is laughable and will only be swallowed by pre-school children. If Advani was told about F-16s he has EVERYTHING to gain by leaking the information and making a big noise.

So the guppies should hold their comments. You may end up looking silly if F16s are not delivered. Wait and watch.

Good news for India!! They can now start their ‘Decisive Battle’. :hehe:

It’s understood that Rumsfeld told Advani that Pakistan had been asking for the F-16s for quite sometime. And that Defence analysts in the Bush Administration had now come around to say that sale of F-16s to Islamabad would not disturb India-Pakistan parity

Shishir Gupta, The Indian Express.

:rotfl: Pre-school children are writing for Indian papers.

Stick to the topic of the thread.

^ Can you repeat what he said. Then tell us whether that was common sense or desperation.

It is people (loosely used term) like Advani, Fernandez and Vajpayee that are showing desperation and exasperation at the level of time this so called military leader is getting from the West.

I look forward to the photographs from ‘Camp David’. :hehe:

More “pre-school” reports from Indian papers…

Advani informed of F16 sale to Pak.? By Sridhar Krishnaswami, The Hindu](http://www.hinduonnet.com/stories/2003061904531100.htm)

And the good old ‘Hindustan Times’ even has a poll running asking it’s readers Would the US be subverting the Indo-Pak peace efforts by supplying arms to Islamabad?

tsk tsk…

All these so-called US' intention are solely based on a report published in a little known american journal. A quick google search would indicate that they are appearing only in Desi papers. While giving F-16s to Pakistan would not be the heaven's fall, I still doubt if the deal will come through. Lets wait and watch till the final press conference. Don't be surprised if it is just more Soya Chunks instead :D

A rather lame attempt to get out of the own goal you scored earlier when you said The story that Advani knew it but didn’t mention it is laughable and will only be swallowed by pre-school children.

Next you’ll be denying that Advani ever went to the US. :hehe:

P.S. Have you voted in the ‘Hindustan Times’ poll yet?

Dhir, most Pakistanis don’t believe that this deal will come through. Infact, it may even be a good thing, as Pakistan has made most progress in indigenous manufacture of arms while there was an arms embargo.

However, it is great to see a number of leading Indian papers carrying this story, and denials being issued by Advani and co. :hehe:

Frankly I'm not excited at all about the whole F-16 news. I think we would be better off if we concentrate more on our relationship with the Chineese and Super-7. We have learned from our history that it would be a mistake to depend on the Americans when it comes to our defence needs.

The F-16, or a similar jet, will be required regardless of the progress of the Super-7.

In additional to its need for the Super-7, the PAF also has a requirement for a small number of hi-tech fighters that will not be fulfilled by the Super-7 and which China does not have the capability to fulfill.

Pakistan is left with looking for either a Russian (highly unlikely), Western European or American craft.

With the latest avionics upgrades, the F-16 could easily fulfill this hi-tech fighter role. Another advantage of the F-16 is that Pakistan already has an established support infrastructure for the craft - it will be cheaper and easier to use the F-16 than any other hi-tech plane in the world.

Plus there is the advantage of the F-16 being one of the cheaper hi-tech planes - a critical requirement for a country like Pakistan.

i think pakistan must look towards france, germany, russia and ofcourse all weather friend china

wasay i heard that the us was gona destroy the F16 instead of selling them to pak ... until war on terror where they put new stuff in them and used them for that terrorising war they carried out... may be there is a chance they may sell to pak because they did upgade f 16's

The US originally put the F-16's Pakistan ordered into their aircraft storage facility in the US desert (the USA rarely destroys old planes - instead it has a vast storage area for tens of thousands of unneeded or old military aircraft, in case it needs them some day.

Some of these planes were later sold to other countries. None were used in the US's post 9-11 attacks on other countries - the US has more than enough combat aircraft in its regular and reserve forces.

In fact, the main problem they had was a potential shortage of bombs rather than aircraft.

it does not matter to india even if pak gets those outdated f 16's
indias got sukois which are superior to f16s
grow up people

I reading paper web page Bush tell Mushraf "you give Osama and I give f16. no give Osama no plain". what baniyaagiri!

sorry je
