- I have lived in Canada, Dubai, and been to Karachi almost every year.. well yea I'm not a resident but still I have good deal of first-hand experience; in fact I might be going to live in KHI by '08.
Yes housing schemes need to be implemented - esp. for the poor, and I have said many times before that our ppl need to be educated and taught about the environment's importance (overpopulation impacts etc.). I also believe trees are a dire necessity in our city - although we should also work towards keeping our country's beautiful biodiversity and natural habitats in good condition.

Really? This Karachi resident certainly hasn't noticed them, care to name some of these roads?
Good developments like the flyover at National Stadium was done by Naimatullah, that thief Mustafa Kamal just comes to the inaguration and takes credit for it.

^^ I dunno about the condition of FLYOVERS (how many are there in Karachi?), I’m talking about streets and roads.. maybe they’re not exactly “world class” but compared to before, they’re kickass. Hmm, yes I know Mr. Kamal ain’t as consistent as Mr. Khan but let’s just hope that our “free and fair” elections bring in a good mayor this time. Why do our greedy politicians need to steal away the people’s basic rights just for some stupid encroaching scheme - and yet they talk about building supertall skyscrapers for our “modern” city.

karachi does not have one single road that doesnt have wholes in it but we are going to have world tallest building.
and those freakin mullahs will come up with some sort of fatwa and have few idiots blow it up. History repeats in pakistan too often. I am not saying not to build things but its like this; i am hungry for food but i still like to wear Armani clothes because i must have a class.

It would have been nice to build this after the completion of Northern Pakisan and taking care of major issues that our country is going for. I think Pakistani aboard would had supported him even more.

Yeah, this is a seperate project by Port trust… The other one which is supposed to be the iconic 1945 footer is still awaiting investors I think…

Instead of wasting money on such buildings they should make schools and hospitals for poor in small villages, they should improve the standards of government schools, they should start teacher training program for government run school, and they should start projects to supply clean water to the poor in cities and villages. The core reason why there is so much destruction in Pakistan is lack of education and basic needs. Right now there is a part of country that has stepped in the 21st century with rest of the world and then we have this bigger part that is basically living in stone. Instead of wasting money on such projects that would further isolate the two extremes’, we should be spending money on bridging the gap between two extremes.

These large building can produce a lot of jobs, even indirectly, since they require high maintanence of all kinds... Hotel staff, which will probably low income individuals... Now hotel of that size can hire at least a 100 people or more, front desk, cooks, room service, bell boys, maintanence crew, cleaning crew.. These will be jobs taken up by low income groups... Also, the mangerial and other post that will go to the more educated bunch. Even if most jobs are menial, and not high paying, any job is better then no job.
Then you have overall maintanence of the building, janitors, etc.
The Mall will allow more retail space for bussiness, and those bussinesses will have to higher employees ofcourse.
The construction of the building helps the entire construction industry along with all inputs such as cement and steel...
And finally, the area around the complex will see a burst of economic activty with more people visting the area, huge rise in property values..
Thus its safe to assume I think that such large projects arent a waste of money...
These projects will definently help people.

Fraudz, I said we should bridge the gap b/w two extremes, now what it has to do with commercial buses and taxis. I am not against building financial centers, etc. But I am against spending so much money on one project that basically targets a certain class. And it has nothing do with karachi, I would have said the same if it was built in Lahore or Islamabad.

This tower won't make much difference if they can't control the extremist. The only way we can control these extremist is crack down on madrassas and give balanced education to masses that would contribute to the building of the country and not destruction by burning buildings/businesses that are contributing towards the economy. Bulding a skyline should not be the priority at this time.

these projects should not have been built in the first place. now if they are being built, they should be made residential and have low prices so they are at least affordable by the average citizen of the city. even though ideally we still need to foster the needs of our poor citizens and the basic amenities of a city.

they dont have the mannerism, or eticates to behave living in a rich building and besides these are private buildings and always private companies are after profits and they are not gonna make sell them for cheap so that average joe can buy them

what kind of an excuse is that? charge people, that's the solution. if they don't pay, force them out, it's simple as that. if you expect mannerful people to buy into your project, then don't invest in karachi - regardless whether you're investing in clifton or nazimabad. if you're investing in karachi, then be prepared to TEACH manners to your customers.
