World’s tallest building to be built on Karachi island: Musharraf
KARACHI: President General Pervez Musharraf has announced to build world’s tallest building on Karachi-connected island while the mega project of northern by-pass will be inaugurated next month.
Addressing the inaugural ceremony of Bagh-e-Ibn-e-Qasim constructed on 130 acres, he praised Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad for taking personal interest in completing the project.
Among others Sindh Governor Isratul Ebad, Sindh CM Arbab Rahim, CIty Nazim Mustafa Kamal, and provincial ministers were also present. Musharraf added that Ebad along Rahim and Kamal has turned Karachi city into parks city.
He annonced to support K-4 project designed to provide 100 million gallons of additional water for Karachi while provision of drinking water will be made sure, saying new projects to resolve issues pertaining to electricity, traffic, and cleanliness are in pipeline.
He asked environmentalists not to criticise the development projects, saying trees will be choped and sea-life disturbed since it is inevitable as consequence of such projects. He assured that new trees in double quantity will be planted later.
He announced to donate Rs2 million for labourers involved in constructing the Bagh-e-Ibn-e-Qasim, saying that 70 thousand plots were sold to poor people in Malir Development scheme and Taiser Town on low prices.
Thanking President Musharraf for taking personal interest in all Karachi projects, Ebad announced to build a resort on 800 acres near Manghopir and picnic spots alongside Malir canal.

The tallest building is going to be the Burj Dubai... To beat the Burj you would have to go exceptionally high. I dont think its possible for Pakistan as yet.

He said that land for the project would be reclaimed from the sea and added that the centre of the project would be a 1,947-foot high building. “Inshallah we will make it. We must show the world that this is an emerging, progressive and dynamic country and we are second to none. We know how to handle ourselves. First of all, he seems to be referring to Emaar's bundle island and buddo island development which being developed by a PRIVATE company. Although, the claim is tall it is not something that we are not capable of, but it is something that is not feasible in my opinion. No need to bash...

^ so there is a possibility that Gawadar port authorities will also have offices in the same building? In that case, yes the project is feasible, since a large foreign investement is coming through for Gawadar.

No, that would be a really bad decision considering Gwadar needs these skyscrapers more than anything for it's image. Also it would be inappropriate having the GPT offices in Karachi instead of Gwadar.

Karachi is under a significant threat from earhtquake! Last time it was hit by a massive earthquake in 1946. And again on Jan 26, 2001! I think its not a good idea to build huge buildings here!
It is better to put this money for poverty alleviation!

Its not as if the money that goes in here would just be an expense, it would ned to have a decent ROI for it to be justifiable.
so lets not look at projects as ‘spent’ money but as an investment. Its like telling someone who is building offices of apartments that a better use of this money is if he distributes iy among beggers at jummah bazaar.

Urbanpk even if a company is a socially responsible company that aids charities and all, it has to focus on making money, making money is the only way it can support the pakistani on the street by providing jobs when the project is built, jobs at companies in business in that facility, jos in businesses that work with the companies located in that facility.
One can not say about any business that they do or do not care about people in the street, but their job is to make money, some companies make it in a responsible way and some dont.
