I don’t understand why is talking about sex is such a taboo? We all know the birds do and the bees do it and we all do it…so why is this such a hush hush topic in Pakistan? Btw, I read an article while back (maybe dawn blog) that all that laborers working in the middle east are bring back STDs and infecting their wives.
Sex is a taboo word in Pakistan. It is readily associated with sin, guilt and shame. But a television channel is breaking new ground by airing a weekly call-in show discussing sexual health.
In a country where fear of religious vigilantes dominates public life, it takes a lot of courage for people to open up about their sexual anxieties.

My married friends tell me that a man’s sexual prowess usually goes down after the first few months of marriage. Is that true?”
Young male caller
And yet, it’s happening on live TV.
The show ‘Clinic Online’ is aired on HTV (Health TV), a channel focusing on everyday lives of Pakistanis with a mix of health and lifestyle content.
And it’s proving popular. Dozens of callers - men as well as women - from across Pakistan ring the show to get on air.
A wide range of issues are brought up, from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and infertility to questions about performance, size and satisfaction.
“He doesn’t come to bed with me anymore,” complains a housewife. “I have tried talking to him but he doesn’t want to talk about it. What shall I do?” she asks
Re: Pakistan sex taboos challenged by TV phone-in show
This is a bad idea. If people have sex related problems they should talk to their gender doctors. To talk about it on air and hearing other people’s problems should not happen. This is a personal topic that should remain private. We don’t have to follow in the shameless kaafirs in everything.
And no, its not necessary to go into the topic of size and satisfaction. A Muslims life is not revolved around sex and how to artificially increase pleasure.
Re: Pakistan sex taboos challenged by TV phone-in show
Shameless kaafirs? Information is empowerment and just b/c you don’t want people to talk about sex does not mean they are not having sex. And how many people have access to doctors in Pakistan? Also, topics like STDs and ED can be medically treated if people know what they are b/c these are public health issues.
Re: Pakistan sex taboos challenged by TV phone-in show
in a country like Pakistan, you wont find many sexual health experts.
plus, people find it easier to talk to some doctor on a phone who doesn’t know them and their identity is not disclosed than talking to their own doctors in person.
I agree that TV show alone is not the answer but certainly it is one of the way to address these problems.
Re: Pakistan sex taboos challenged by TV phone-in show
I think we take our privilege for granted. We here on these forums have access to the internet. We don’t need to call someone and ask them about these kind of issues. If we’re curious about anything we just go to google and type in whatever comes to mind. Is it fair that people who don’t have internet or don’t understand English don’t have access to all this knowledge. Knowledge we can summon to our computer screens in mere seconds.
And before you say everybody has cellphones in Pakistan. They can use the internet on that thing and find whatever smut they want to find. Yeah they have internet and sure it’s easy to get to smut. However searching for something educational is kinda tough when you can’t even form a search string, since you don’t understand English.
I don’t think it’s fair for us to decide if other people have access to these kind of shows or not, because we’re not even the target audience. We don’t need these shows so easy for us to dismiss them as dirty, Western or whatever comes to mind when you’re high on caffeine(hey we don’t do alcohol or drugs, we get high on caffeine).
Re: Pakistan sex taboos challenged by TV phone-in show
I heard this program on BBC radio while driving to work. I think its a daring attempt to discuss one of the core problems that may is resulting in so many problems. And sometimes it goes to extreme and disastrous levels that leads to confining their issues within themselves and thus resulting in deviating from norms, harassment and rapes.
Now what they are doing is raising awareness and encourage you to speak up. People go through so many internal issues but they are shy to even talk to anyone closer which in turn creates a bigger issue.
I remember i’ve seen very young boyz standing by the carts in downtown area while going thru porn magazines. How’d they let go their frustration? It definitely is a two-headed snake for the society.
Re: Pakistan sex taboos challenged by TV phone-in show
Problem with a country like Pakistan is, there are a lot of perverted people. Third class cheap thinking, illiterate people as well. This kind of a programme is a good idea, but not in a country like Pakistan. This can go bad very easily. Cheap kind of people starting to call etc. Also, Pakistani society is a very closed minded claustrophobic one. If someone finds out you called on the show to discuss such matters ‘publicly’, you will be humiliated and rumours will start flying.
First and foremost, Pakistan needs to tackle poverty and illiteracy. All the other things will start getting solved on their own.
Re: Pakistan sex taboos challenged by TV phone-in show
Not anymore or less than anywhere else. The problem is when Pakistanis themselves start generalising about Pakistanis. Admitting our problems is one thing. Calling us more perverted than everyone else is another. The attitudes towards sex isn’t due to perversion in Pakistan, but due to the fact we are very conservative as a country.
