Yes, this is a step in the right direction. Pakistan and Russia have a huge potential in trade and many other fields of mutual interest. Relationship with Russia should be developed rapidly!
" BEIJING: Pakistan and Russia agreed on Wednesday to re-launch their inter-governmental commission by the end of this year to revatalise bilateral relations, with focus on infrastructure development, energy, rail link, heavy industry and upgradation of Pakistan Steel. The agreement was reached at a meeting between Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin held here on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. During the meeting which lasted about an hour and fifteen minutes, they agreed on the need for re-engaging relations, according to Pakistan’s Ambassador Masood Khan who briefed the media on the talks between the two leaders. Mr Putin said his country would support Pakistan’s request for full membership of the SCO and indicated that he would back resumption of composite dialogue between India and Pakistan because reduction of tension between the two countries would facilitate improvement of Moscow’s relations with Islamabad."
Ever since 1947, Pakistani lefties and commies have been jumping up and down for the trade with Russians.
The reality is that Russian economy and Russian strategic interests DO NOT match with Pakistan.
Therefore it never worked out for Pakistan to get any long term benefit from them. In fact Indians the biggest crock for Ruskies have dumped Russia for pretty much the same reasons.
Funny that 50-80% of trade surplus of India, china, S. Korea, Singapore, Japan is with the USA and EU. The biggest export destination for Pakistani products is the USA.
Russia is trying its level best to continue the anarchy in Afghanistan just so that the central Asian resources remain under Ruskie thumb.
But Pakistan's leftie and socialist intellectuals will keep on singing Ruskie songs. da da da dadadada dada dasvidania.
^^ Burqa, may I kindly ask you not to comment on topics you don't have any idea about? I appreciate that you want to comment negatively on everything positive about Pakistan, but it just makes you look very silly.

Chanda Ji. Go dig out the Pak "co-oooo-operation" with Ruskies and the trade balance for the last 25 years, and compare it to our trade with the West.
Then make your predictions for the next 25 years. Otherwise shooting warm air is easy, getting benefits from Ruskies is bery bery bery hard.
@Shardmanny: Yeah, it just shows that Russia has moved on. It is time for us to move on as well and try to establish a good relationship with yet another powerful country not far from us.
There are many areas of common interest between the two countries and Pakistan can surely learn a thing or two from Putin.
It is a good sign that some one after many years (after Bhutto) realized the necessity of some kind of friendly terms with Russia. But it is too late. Dictators have taken the country in such advance stage towards West, it is very difficult to achieve meaningful change. Russia is great friend and ally of India, which is also a big hinderance to have any remarkable breakthrough in future.
....... friendly terms with Russia. But it is too late. Dictators have taken the country ..........
You mean "Russian" Dictators have taken their country to such an advanced stage. Right?
If not, this is a "self-flagellation" by a Pakistani at its worst.
Ever since the European ethnicity of Russians got out from the under the yoke of Mongolized ethnic control, they have had a policy (at least from the last 300+ years) to clobber, dismember, occupy, destroy the central Asians states that are dominated by Muslim population.
Afghanistan and Pakistan were always NEXT on the list of Russians to give out the KGBiach's treatment.
Considering this 300+ history and treatment by Russians, it is hardly rational to expect some pseudo-revolutionary like Bhutto or his clan member to change the Russians.
....... ..........Russia is great friend and ally of India, .....
There are no Friends in the world, just the strategic interests that bring country's together. India is saying slamun Alaikum to the West (US+EU) just like other ex-commies like China, or the aqalmand countries like S.Korea, Japan, Singapore, and Brazil.
It is just some "red-shirted" Pakistani marxists who keep on hoping that "Momma Russia" will give them some milk from the breasts of socialism. Alas that is never to come. Momma has lots of other kiddos and Pakistan is never on the "Positive priority list" of Momma.
^^ Burqa take your rants to some other thread or open a new one.
This thread is for serious discussion and not about idiotic statements like the above!
I'll request the mods to remove Burqa's posts from this thread as they make absolutely no sense and add no value to the discussion about this very serious topic! He is posting just some random sentences for the sake of diversion.
^^ How building new partnerships in the world to co-operate in fields of mutual interest (win-win for both) can be a trap for Pakistan? Please elaborate.
Posh Spice, the cold war ended 20 years ago and best part is that the Russians want a warm water port in the Arabian sea. That is what we can give them :D

Dead commies! May be that's a news for you. That isn't a factor these days.
FYI. Russians these days do not want to get to "warm waters" of Arabian see. Instead they want central Asian states to stop "wanting to go to warm waters" and establish oil and gas pipelines through Pak-Af.
And thus goes the Russian support/weapons for Talbianic menace.

Russians are the biggest capitalists I have come across lately. So if they want to invest in energy sector etc. in Pakistan, it is a win-win for both the countries.
