Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

KARACHI: The government is taking Pakistan’s telecom future seriously and has deregulated the sector. As a result, scores of new private entrants are gearing up to provide service, and since October 2007 cellular subscriptions have shot up to 71.5 million making Pakistan one of the fastest-growing cellular markets with a cellular mobile density of 44.51. The Indian press reported the results of a survey in which Pakistan is ahead of India in telecom progress. Though the Indian telecom sector surges ahead with six million new mobile connections every month, its penetration among the lowest strata of society, especially in rural areas, is much less than in Pakistan and Sri Lanka, a recent survey has shown. Bangladesh has sought Pakistani cooperation to introduce reforms in the telecommunication sector of their country, while lauding the telecom policies of Pakistan, their effective implementation and the exponential growth shown by the sector during recent years. The deregulation of the country’s telecom industry is fast gaining momentum with dozens of more communication companies and millions of customers entering both the fixed-line and mobile telephone markets. The sector is currently contributing 2 percent in GDP directly and indirect contribution in other sector of the economy takes this share to about 5 percent. Total revenues of telecom sector in 2006-07 reached Rs 236 billion whereas total investment was $4,108 million. Telecom companies have invested over $8 billion during the last four years in Pakistan particularly the mobile sector whose investment share accounts for 73 percent. In 2006-07, cellular mobile sector has invested over $2.7 billion, which becomes about 66 percent of total investment by the sector. Local loop segment of the industry is also taking off and in 2006-07 about $7.8 million were invested by this sector. LDI operators have invested about $603 million in 2006-7, which is about 15 percent of the total investment by the sector. romail kenneth

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Alhamdulilallah. God bless the Pakistani Army. :D

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Pakistan is a growing market for many things, but majority of it is negative...

Mush supporters can foolishly cling to such things, but the world isnt fooled and neither is anyone who knows anything about Pakistan.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

:hehe::hehe:

maybe for some blind haters it is, but fact is that pakistan is a growing market for many postive things, all negitive things are from past regimes and only blind people cant see that.

today pakistan is regarded as a big growing market for investments with businessed booming and we all know that, its the fact so swallow it.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

LOL,

I used to think Afghanistan was the number one country with cell phone growth. Here, I bet Paki neocons would sing praises for their prophet’s lord President Bush for his wise policies and the unprecedented economic boom in Afghanistan. :rotfl:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20479899/

KABUL, Afghanistan - About 150,000 people subscribe to cell phone service each month in Afghanistan and there’s “no end in sight” to the growth, the country’s communications minister said Tuesday.

Speaking after the launch of the nation’s fourth cell phone service provider, Amirzai Sangin predicted the telecommunication and information technology sector would “be the engine of growth for Afghanistan.”

Afghanistan’s economy is growing quickly, due mostly to the infusion of foreign aid since the downfall of the Taliban in 2001. But the country’s living standards are among the lowest in the world and it faces mounting security problems.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

lol you know whats funny, a strong cell phone infrastructure that actually yields alot of money is through postpaid regular contracted connections, which is totally the opp in Pakistan where prepaid-pay first scratch card connections are prevalent! I dont know what these jokers are trying to portray by using stupid meaningless examples and presenting a fake image to reassure themselves.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Hey you know, let's be fair, this yanta has done a few good things, so has every one of Pakistan's rulers be they civil, military, or banana republic vaudeville. Each one of them has millions of admirers. Now I would argue with good sound reasons that this Yenta along with yayha khan have the least admirers (some very very dedicated fidayeen, but still a tiny clump) but that's besides the point.

So given that every rulers has done a few good things, at the ery least everyone should support and keep struggling for the course of representative democracy, and no not one tailor made to stoke one idiot fascist dictator's self obsessed legacy.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Look man, im all for the cellular boom… More power to the govt that brings in this revolution…

But if your going to use this as a some kind of trump card and tout it as an accomplishment to distract people from the problems faced by Pakistan, then you have to try alot harder…

I just find it naive to think that when the country is burning and sinking, you stubbornly point to things like cell phones as some kind of great achievmnet..

Maybe if your lucky, the only thing left floating after the country sinks, is Mushraf and millions of Cell phones…

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

PaKpatriot, as much as i understand you love your nation; when has Pakistan not been sinking?

Can you point out a time period for me; all my life on this earth Pakistan has been sinking.
The only time i understand it was relatively good is during the first 5-8 years.

Point being, we are humans, let us enjoy what we have because we dont have much. And certainkly berating people over an online forum chat isnt going to solve Pakistan's problems.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Exactly... Cell phones have no relevance if everything else is collapsing around us...

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Well, we had some confidence a few months back.. The economy was still showing signs of trouble, but atleast their were signs of political stability.. The Media were booming, the Judiciary were strong and independant...

Now, everythings colapsed... Musharaf turned into a dictator, Benzazir was murdered, country is in turmoil, you name it...

And some of these problems we face now are very new and very grave... I can list them all but im sure you already know...

Im sure you are confident, but not everyone is going to share your view.. Pakistan has succumbed to the pressure before and has sunk.. This time things might be repeating.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Pakistan has always been in a State of Emergency. Its a nation on life support since day one. You mention that for Musharraf's first 6 years things were looking cheery, but now they are dreary.

Im sure the nation will suffer, but it has always pulled up.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Your mouth to gods ears... But I want to break this cycle.. And the only way around it is getting rid of Mush and reinstating the judiciary, giving the media their freedom, and holding fair and honest elections.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Actually in my opinion the Media creates confusion and anger in the illiterate awam who have weak critical thinking skills. Educated people can point out biases on the tv journalist reports, uneducated cant.

Musharraf did his job, but now we need a fresh face with fresh ideas - but there is nobody else. Thats the whole tragedy. Are you going to elect Rogaine Hair Growth model Nawaz Sharif or world class Cricketer Imran Khan? Or Maulana Sahib from NWFP?

Yeah - its that bad.

The cycle is too ingrained and viscious, it cant be broken, and thats the truth. Not in the next 50 years atleast. India broke theirs with their Socialism and now are building a Capitalist base on a cleaner system (although im not too optimistic about such rigid caste socities) and China broke their feudal nonsense through Mao's destructive "cleansing".

Pakistan has never broke it. And its probably too late.

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Re: Pakistan regarded as fastest-growing cellular market

Dear Biddeh I disagree. Pakistan has a solid foundation on which it was founded. Pakistan is a very very diverse country and not one where people are persecuted because of their ethnicity unlike the ruefull Kurds in Turkey.

Pakistanis are a resilient people, a country which had an excellent start and has been more often than not only beenregressing largely not to any Islamism or Jehadism but due to the military clique (not surprisingly, every dictatorship has somehow increased militancy wrapped in religious flavor).

All we need to do is keep fighitng and speaking ou loud for our rights. RIGHTS. Rights given to us by the creator and the constitution no less. And not let the self declared saviours obsessed with their legacy do it for us.

Pakistan is not the Pak military. Pakistan is the people of Pakistan. They are the owners of their respective land whatever the province. What we have done in Pakistan Iam sorry to say was unthinkable. I mean I used to take pride that it is other nations like India who use force and state sponsored militarism to control their territory or expand it. Nothing so blatantly had happened in Pakistan. The result is our Indian frieinds everywhere mocking us and using the well fitted tu quoque :rotfl: s on us. An embarrassing shut-up call. Atleast still we may argue that it wasn’t an elected body which did this to us.
