Pakistan Railways in Shambles

A few months ago, news was published that PR is going to be connected with Europe via Baluchistan and Iran. Off and on such kinds of lies published for Railways for many years. PR which is running with heavy losses, under debt of billions is in a very poor state. The tracks are bad; I wonder how passengers feel when they know that the coach running at 70 mph on a cracked track can derail any time. The rescue equipment is out of date, the 65 ton crane runs on steam power is as old as more than 100 years. The break in the jib of crane while lifting the derailed coaches shows how equipments are dilapidated and needs immediate replacement. pehlay apnay ghar ko to thik karo phir oonchay khwab dekho.

Poor employees died during relief operation as tons of debris fell on them. The government should pay compensation for the lives and who injured during performing their duties.

DAWN.COM | National | Train derails; two die during rescue operation

**SANGHAR, Dec 4: Two men died and seven others suffered injuries when main arm of a crane broke into two and fell on people in the course of lifting eight bogies of Karakoram Express, which derailed at Lundo railway station early on Friday. **

**The train was going to Karachi when it derailed, damaging almost half of the platform. Villagers and people living near the railway station rescued passengers trapped in the bogies. **

**They shifted the injured to Shahdadpur and provided food and transport to others till a railway crane arrived to lift the bogies and put them back on tracks. **

**In the course of lifting the coaches, its arm broke into two and fell on rescuers, killing Mohammad Rafiq Rajput, 55, and Imran Mughar, 16, on the spot and injuring seven others. Lundo station master Abdul Ghani blamed cracked tracks for the accident and ruled out sabotage. **

Re: Pakistan Railways in Shambles

merge with indian railways...they'll show how to run railways efficiently with lil resources :)

At least they can learn from Indian Railways. All officers and key employees should be sent to India for training. PR should only import heavy equipment from India and save billions of foreign exchange. The stupid people of PR.

My dear I have no hidden agenda, what I speak is unbiased and make sense to sensible people. Previous military government imported $billions of defective locomotives and coaches from China, yet adding to the complexity of maintenance. PR had to incur billions of Rs to modify the plat forms of stations accross the country as coaches frames were hitting the plat forms. Instead, PR people should have imported these heavy equimpment from India with less than half of the price with no transportation charges, saving billions. alas the stupid people......the hate with India has made minds prejudice and ineffective, the thinking power has gone down the drain. Because of the hatred, it is o.k. to sustain losses but it is not o.k. to do business with India and improve the working of Railways, 98% of the population travel on rail, still safe, cheapest and comfortable mode of transport.

**
i agree. i've lived 2/3rds og my life in india and i've enjoyed travelling on indian railways comfortably and safely and cheaply. i think the fares are one of the lowest in the world. i travel Allahabad-Delhi sector [650 kms] in first AC in Rajdhani express for less than 50 dollars canadian.**

^^^

Can you post photographs of latest locomotives and coaches manufactured by India? What is the maximum speed of a passenger train? I hope some one from PR should read this thread and offer some insight of the working.

**
Shatabdi is India’s fastest train which currently runs at 150 km/hr but has been tested at 160 km/hr. the latest coaches are called LHB coaches, entirely designed N built in india and is used in Rajdhani express trains as wll…soon i will have post about indian railways…i am a rail enthusiast btw  u’m glad that u’ve some interest in railways

this is shatabdi express and the latest LHB coaches:…amazing video:**

Rajdhani Express with LHB coaches with IR’s most recent WAP 7 electric locomotive: two Rajdhani’s travelling in the same direction, both close to New Delhi [destination]…a rare occurrence: Rajdhanis rum at 140 kms/hr**:

now lasty but not the least:

indi’a luxury train, Palace on Wheels, the indian equivalent of the Orient Express, enjoy!**

Khalil KhaaN FaaKhta,

Thanks for shearing wonderful videos on Indian Railways. 160 kph is equivalent to 100 mph as compared to Pakistan's 70 mph. You know what Pakistan Railway has the German technology of manufacturing LHB coaches. I think it only needs upgarde. The factory is in Islambad, installed in perhaps late 60's or in 70's. It had manufactured a number of LHB coaches. I don't know what is its present status? Instead of importing defective coaches from China, PR should have imported LHB coaches from India along with up graded technology, which had not only saved precious foreign exchange, lower costs and employment to number of local people. alas the stupid people of Pakistan.....

You have shown electice locomotive, I want to know what Diesel Electric Locomotive is manufactured in India now a days? How many kinds exist?

Pakistan in DE catogory has or had: Alco, GM, GMCU (Candaian) Alesthom(French), ALPW (Austrailian), General Electric, Hitachi (Engine Alco, Electic Equipment-Japan), Hegensial(German-Engine GM, Electric Equipment-German), ARU and ARP(Original Alco, Refurbished from Bombardier-Canada, and locally refubished from parts imported from Canada) and finally chinese, I don't know its make.

The most successful category is Alco, GM and G.E. all US made. Alco is now obsolete, but I think still manufactured in India and other countries under license, perhaps the most successful technology in DE locmotives category.

Good discussion.

PR can save billions by trading with India. For eg. PR is now buying some of the best equipment and have placed an order from China for those (axles and other related stuff). China doesnt have the manufacturing quality of that level but they are buying it from India and selling it to PR, but @ triple the price. The earlier supplies from china are bad and hence PR is insisting on Indian made supply. If PR deals directly with Indian companies, they will get at 1/3rd the price.

thank you so much for liking the discussion.
TRUE, and this will benefit the two nations directly and also pave the way for better trading co-operation in other spheres and surely that will lead to better relations. i hope cooler heads will prevail. thanks for joining in the discussion.

An excellent revelation. Where are the people who does not want trade relations with India? See how China has deceived Pakistan by enterring such venture with India, where as Pakistan Government could have directly dealt by negotiating with India and saved millions and millions of foreign exchange. alas the stupid people....

Still there is a time to wake up PR people and start talking with counter parts in India.

Re: Pakistan Railways in Shambles

Helloooooooooooooooooo "sleepers" first try to solve the issues then do trade.

NEW DELHI: Indian Army Lieutenant Colonel PS Purohit procured the explosives used in the 2007 Samjhota Express train bombing and 2008 Malegaon blast, Indian police told a court in Nashik city on Saturday.

Maharashtra police said the colonel had obtained 60 kilogrammes of the explosive from Jammu and Kashmir in 2006 according to a witness in the Malegaon blast case. The court remanded the colonel in police custody until November 18.

Meanwhile, Hindu ascetic Sadhvi Pragya Singh and Lt Col Purohit tested negative in narco tests on direct involvement in the Samjhota Express bombing, but gave important clues about their clandestine network. The Mumbai Police ATS is now tracing two followers of Sadhvi and an Indore-based Hindu Jagran Manch that they believe are the ‘missing link’ in the Samjhota Express bombing, said a senior security official who is part of the investigations.

The suitcases that were used to blow up three carriages of Samjhota Express were traced to Indore, which has emerged as a hub of clandestine activities of Hindu militant groups.

First all issues on table then do trade.

Re: Pakistan Railways in Shambles

While Talking about Railways and how expensive they are when bought from China, lets see this news item... it has some interesting reasons for locomotives being expensive from China....

Islamabad, July 11 (ANI): The United States has reprimanded Pakistan for the multi billion rupee Railway scam in which an US firm was denied a fair chance to secure a contract of a whopping 12.5 billion rupees. According to The News, US Senator, Robert P Casey Jr has written a letter to President Asif Ali Zardari telling him about the massive irregularities committed by some of the Pakistan Railway Board’s top officials while purchasing 75 electric locomotives from China.
The two page letter, which was delivered to the Pakistan Embassy in Washington recently, warned Zardari that the ‘insufficient transparency and demonstrated irregularities’ could hamper country’s reputation in the international community and would seriously undermine the much needed confidence in its governing institutions.
Casey, in his strong-worded letter, has asked Zardari to stop the finalization of the deal between the Chinese firm and the Railways Ministry.
“I am concerned to hear that notwithstanding the clear pattern of irregularities in the bid process, Pakistan Railways is now moving towards finalising the purchase order. I feared that the finalisation of the tender after a process marked by insufficient transparency and demonstrated irregularities could negatively impact Pakistan’s reputation in the international community and undermine needed confidence in its governing institutions,” the letter stated.
“I look forward to hearing from you that how interests of my constituents are protected equitably,” it added.
Despite several shortcomings, the Pakistan Railways had awarded a tender to a Chinese firm to supply 75 locomotives, and deliberately ignored the American company’s bid.
However, Presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar has denied receiving any such letter.
“I have not heard about it,” said Babar.
Meanwhile, the top honchos of the Railways Ministry functionaries have confessed before the National Assembly’s Special Committee on Railways about the alleged irregularities. (ANI)

surely it needs serious reforms.
i had the opportunity to travel in new trains few years back after railway reforms while going on holidays and always preferred trains over car travel for medium distances.

recently went on train ride in same train and i was shocked to see the state of the room, as if it was really badly managed, not only the condition of the room worsened but service and timings as well, before for 600 mile distance it took around 5.5-6 hours including stops and now almost 8-9 hours.

**
WHATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!

u know what the average speed wud have been? almost 100 miles an hour NON STOP.....even now, as u say, 8-9 hours wud be considered super.

india's fastest train, Shatabdi Express, travelling at 160 kms an hour [Delhi to Bhopal] covers 710 kms in 7 hours coz that train makes one stop at Agra and has to slow down due to various reasons, including track repairs, track not available, congestion on the network.

please check ur facts and then let us know. thank you**

happyheart,

Please don't derail the thread by posting irrelevant and off tangent posts. The thread is not discussing terrorism and railway accidents in India. This is only an economic issue and one of the ways to improve working of PR. The reason PR is in such state of affairs is because people like you knowing nil about system poke their noses in most technical government own department. Because of such attitude, the technical officers/management has failed in past and forced to take wrong decisions like importing below standard equipment from China and other places. The general who headed previously bambooed railways, got his commission on such shady deals now enjoying his life. Tell me who is suffering now? perhaps not you or corrupt general, but majority of poor population who travel on rail. For God sake Leave Railway alone let the railway men decide what they want.

Involving in Railway affairs by tom, dick and harry is like involving parchoon walas in military affairs. The only difference is that stupid parchoon walas get heavy kick at behind. On the otherhand railway men get the kick on their behinds if they don't listen to stupid parchoonwalas.

Perhaps this deal was made by previous government. If what you have posted is the truth, PM or President should intervene immediately and stop this shady deal. Importing from India is ideal, but importing from US is next to ideal. US is one of the pioneer in evolving railway systems. Their Alco, GM and GEU brands are superb locomotives and successfully completed their useful lives in PR system. Still a number of these locomotive working fine in harsh, sandy and extreme hot weather in Pakistan.

8-9 hours i said is what being offered currently and before when this new train was launched it was 140KM/hour.
ran by the name korakoram express, from karachi its started at 4pm and its arrival time in lahore was 9am, although what i heard it used tobe late.

i didnt travel till lahore in it but within sindh province but for us it was great from karachi to Rohri/sukkur 5.5-6 hours including one stop total distance around 500 kms

furthermore we dont have long distances as its in india so speed is a factor but personal opinion i want is quality of service and interior.
