Pindand.. let’s put it in perspective. Would India(ns) be so offended if some paper prints similar cartoon about India? I don’t think so. What’s such a big friggin deal about a silly little cartoon? Look at the positive side, the dog appears to be well fed and look pretty nasty too.
Ohh so the Pakistani college students read special newspapers, that really news. I think the only college which can afford such luxury would be some military colleges in Pakistan.
I never said I believed what I heard about that, I was merely stating what I heard. Now you can tell me what I've heard its wrong but please give some details on why reading newspapers in Pakistan is a luxury.
I had to convince my mom during my student days that DAWN susbcription was worth it. Otherwise it was hard to subscribe DAWN by middle class family like mine.
People resort to inexpensive Urdu Evening special newspapers which r like 4 pages at most, with salacious news and un-corrobrated news items, that appeal to mostly uneducated ppl.
Thanks, didn’t know they were expensive for middle class families. Guess I’m used to the system here in the US where the newspapers are affordable. I’ve got another question. I’ve heard of Nawai Waqt, is that the same type of Urdu newspaper you were talking about?
Jang, Nawai Waqt r morning urdu newspapers. Right wing type. But not very salacious.
You would be surprised to know that Jang Publications (the biggest news/media Org) have one urdu newspaper (http://jang.com.pk/jang) and english newspaper The News (http://jang.com.pk/thenews), and the Urdu version is more right wing than the English version. It just goes to show that English newspaper reading audience is much more liberal than the urdu newspaper audience.
Wow, I guess Jang knows how to target the right market when it comes to reading in Urdu or reading in English. And very smart of them to target them both at the same time. So I guess there is no Urdu newspaper thats read widely by educated people?
^ After partition, Urdu-English newspaper divide is the most cruel joke that was done on my favourite language Urdu. I can’t understand how we produced liberal intellectuals like Manto and Faiz, from that right wing base. But as I am told, this gradually happened after partition in Pakistan.
And no, I have not heard any newspaper. There is a news that http://dailytimes.com.pk is coming up with urdu version. Their management is quite liberal, so I would hope that they might come up with some good quality and critical urdu newspaper.
Jang has never been classified as an Right wing newspaper in Pakistan, rather its always known as a pro-establishment newspaper. This can be seen on their news channel as well. On the other hand Nwai-e-waqat can be classified as a right wing newspaper.
The urdu news papers are widely read in Pakistan, and that include the national papers such as Jang and Nwai-e-waqat. The English daily newspapers from all over Pakistan can not beat the numbers of Urdu newspapers sold in any major city in Pakistan.
I would not assess the whole Pakistani society for being liberal or not just on the basis of English newspaper circulation, that would be long stretch, which cannot be substantiated.
Hmm...when the establishment has been mostly right wing, then what would u call a pro establishment entity?
Jang's stands during the last 2 decades have always been pro shariat bill, anti-hindu, anti-jews, pro Zia-ul_haq Islamic strict sentences, public hanging/flogging of criminals/rapists......
