Pakistan and Peru want to purchase South Korea’s retired A-37 light attack aircraft, officials of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said Monday.

Peru’s air force chief of staff asked to buy A-37 aircraft during a meeting with DAPA commissioner Lee Sun-hi in October, a DAPA spokesman said. Lee visited the South American nation Oct. 20-23, he said.

Talks over the delivery of spare parts of the A-37 are also under way between the South Korean Air Force and Pakistani authorities, following a request for the deal in May via diplomatic channels, the official added.

``We are reviewing the requests from the two nations positively as part of efforts to enhance defense and diplomatic ties with them, as well as help expand South Korea’s defense industry,‘’ an official of the Ministry of National Defense said.

The A-37, nicknamed Dragonfly, was developed in 1963 by modifying the Cessna-built T-37 trainer. The aircraft was used during the Vietnam War as a ground attacker.

The South Korean Air Force had operated the ``Black Eagles’’ acrobatic flight team with A-37 jets since 1994. The team made its last air show appearance in October with A-37s, which will be replaced with indigenous T-50 supersonic jets.

In June, the Air Force decided to ground jets with an age of greater than 35 years including RF-5 reconnaissance planes and A-37Bs amid safety concerns.

Ancient… and so are the Taliban. These aircrafts will be sufficient enough against them insha’allah.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

Why can't we use our current a/c? Don't we a/cs like t33 already ?

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

T-33s are phased out from PAF.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

why are we gonna buy this almost 50 year old aircraft?

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

We can't afford the A-10s, so the A-37s will do fine in the mountains of Waziristan/Swat. Plus we already have the it's varient T-37 trainers in the service.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

So what trainer do we have now? K-8 is not in enough numbers. I remember reading PAF sold some trainers to BAF?

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

Why doesn't America sell us a dozen A-10 to fight the Al Qaeda Nazis and their Militant Facist allies

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

Last time America offered us the A-10, we turned it down and asked for F-16s.

At any rate, you don't need A-10s to fight the taliban. The GAU-8 gun is primarily anti-tank and not anti-infantry.

The A-37 served with distinction in the counter-insurgency role in Vietnam, and should serve quite nicely against the Taliban. Kudos to Pakistan's government for finding a cash-efficient way to deliver bang on top of the Taliban.

More to the point, the A-37 is virtually useless for fighting against India. Even though these are relatively cheap planes, the investment made in buying them suggests that the government forsees long-term combat against militants - it's not going to be a quick fight.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

When did the US offer us A-10s? I remember the US offer us the experimental F-20 concept in the eighties but we went with f-sola..

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

Maybe they'll use it against the SLA or Al-Benazir groups that are forming up right now. MQM is also preparing for the inevitable as we speak. Sad, just sad.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

The USA offered us the A-10 in the 80s when threatened by Soviet invasion, general Zia said we needed air superiority fighters instead, then they offered us the F-20, but we said we wanted F-16s.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

The Americans I think wanted to give us F-5 Freedom Fighters during the Afghan war while we kept asking for F-16s which they just didn't want us to have, and when the F-5s were almost finalized ACM Anwar Shamim refused to accept any F-5s and told this bluntly to the US Gens as well as Gen Zia, and so finally F-16s were approved by 1981-2.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

A-10 is a pretty useless aircraft in the VVS / DRAAF vs. PAF scenario. It is good for mop-up operations after you have f*cked your enemies up to near death status. Even in iraq after all the bombings, the US still lost many A-10s to iraqi fire in 2003.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

Only one A-10 was lost to hostile fire in 2003 out of 60 deployed.

At any rate, the A-10 was offered because it was expected that any communist attack into Pakistan would be tank-heavy; and the PAF lacked anti-tank capability.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

From what I saw on the history channel, I believe a couple were lost from the way the experts described it in the program.

Khair, for the PAF vs. DRAAF / VVS scenario, the main problem was of air superiority since we didn't have F-7 in numbers and the roosie MiG-21s and 23s out-maneuvered our F-6s very easily. I believe the US, like usual, was trying to stonewall us to buy crap from them. This is why I am wary of the current F-16 deal as well! I bet a democrat [even a republican] that comes in 2009 will end up canceling the deal and giving us overpriced soyabeans or horse manure again"!

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

Sorry but wrong pic… lol

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

^ :cb: probably Pakistani Dragon is campaigning for him as next Pakistani Mosebat :hehe:

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

Unfortunately, this is true.

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

Why is that unfortunate?

Re: Pakistan, Peru to buy South Korean A-37s

^Coz we should have bought some of A-10s. Since this type of aircraft has a lot of upgrades including night vision for low-light operations. We could need some of these futures in combat.
