Pakistan has a very severe lack of Attack Helicopters.
We only have 20 Obselete Cobra Gunships.
Those Gunships are the primary firepower that has been deployed against Taliban and Al-Qaeda and Balochi Terrorists. It has worked very well but the severe shortage of these Gunships prevent them from being deployed in a more forceful way.
In other words there are not enough attack helicopters to cover the entire rugged terrain and when our Army moves in, we suffer heavy losses.
Helicopter Gunships can saturate an entire area with heavy fire and then our forces can move in to do mop up operations.
Pakistan should ask USA for atleast 100 AH-64D Apache Gunships and Upgrade Kits for its aging fleet of Cobra Gunships.
Pakistan should stop concentrating solely on F-16 and spend money on other areas such as Attack Helicopters.
Youre right, Ive often thought about this too and I wonder why there's so little focus on attack helicopters. The Apaches are an obvious choice at the moment, let's see if anything is done in this regard.
Instead of asking Uncle Sam for helicopters; why don't you make your own.
Even India has several local versions of attack helicopters.
Helicopters don't have to be high tech and are not expensive. Cheap commercial helicopters can easily be modified to have a few rocket launchers and heavy machine guns.
And remember, you will be using it against AL Queda so it does not have to high tech.
If you can make the AL-Khalid tank then upgrading a commerical helicopter to a military one is very easy.
Well if we are a Non-Nato ally and a front line state against the war on terrorism then USA should furnish us with the best weapons to wage the war on terrorism
And Attack Helicopters, Predator Drones and even a few A-10 Talbots would be great
I think pakistan already has apache helicopters along with these cobra helicopters. To deal with Al-qaeda, do you need to procure 100 apache helicopters?....you can deal with them with already what you have.
I dont think any other country apart of US and russia has so many attack helicopters!.

Re-inventing the wheel is a waste of time & money. Why build our own, when there are so many cheaper & more efficient alternatives available, especially for a country with a low budget?

Why only Al-Qaeda? It could be used against Indians as well.
Why should it not be high-tech? If the enemy fires a SAM (such as Al-Qaeda’s Stinger which brutally raped Russian attack helicopters), what defense will the helicopter have? How will it track the missile? How will it detect the firing of the missile? Commercial helicopters don’t do this. Commercial helicopters don’t even have proper radars for battle. Their radars (eyes) are limited to aerial traffic. How will a modified commercial helicopter identify and/or track targets on the ground (i.e. trucks, buildings)?

What we need is some sensible, and educated people. That is what builds a nation. If you need to bomb ur people in order to keep the country intact, let them seperate. It doesnt matter.
People with different ideologies (including Alqaeda and taliban) can be dealt with differently. We don't just need to bomb them.
Shadan, GOOD DEFENSE and MILITARY to PROTECT the HOMELAND builds a great nation. We don't need a "good" nation. We need a great nation and that can only happen when regional bullies are kept out...

Ofcourse, you are right. We all need good defense and for that we need weapons and stuff. But those can only be effective in a conventional war (as a war between pak-india).
About Alqaeda/TAliban, you can bomb the people but you can't bomb their ideas. This generation will die, but the next will be born again. Ideas cannot be killed by killing the people who harbour them. They can only be countered with reason and intellect.
are the attack helicopters best utilization of our limited resources in countering indian armor ? how can we guarentee their survival in any future battlefield given the indians have a 3 to 1 superority in interceptors?

i think at one time shah's army had 202 cobras plus couple of hundred AH-1s
they served them well in iran-iraq war but neither side had the strenght to maintain air superority constantly over the battlefield thats why they were so effective

We fought three wars with them. Hundreds of thousands of people died on both sides. What more do you want?
They did not dismember our country at all. They just HELPED dismember it. And so did our army. Do we need to fight them as well? What more do you want?
^^ So you are suggesting that we give up on our military, while India keeps going on with it? When tensions or war arises, we will have even more losses than before, and they will have the upperhand in the conflict, if we don't give adequate funding to the military right now.

The defence budget is less than 3% of GDP; the military is also able to generate its own funds through its own services.
