Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

I’m not sure what to make of this, but this sounds very serious. Lets hope and pray that this not true. :frowning:

Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

Pakistan in danger of collapse

  • ** Paul McGeough**

PAKISTAN could collapse within months, one of the more influential counter-insurgency voices in Washington says. The warning comes as the US scrambles to redeploy its military forces and diplomats in an attempt to stem rising violence and anarchy in Afghanistan and Pakistan. “We have to face the fact that if Pakistan collapses it will dwarf anything we have seen so far in whatever we’re calling the war on terror now,” said David Kilcullen, a former Australian Army officer who was a specialist adviser for the Bush administration and is now a consultant to the Obama White House.
“You just can’t say that you’re not going to worry about al-Qaeda taking control of Pakistan and its nukes,” he said.
As the US implements a new strategy in Central Asia so comprehensive that some analysts now dub the cross-border conflict “Obama’s war”, Dr Kilcullen said time was running out for international efforts to pull both countries back from the brink.

When he unveiled his new “Afpak” policy in Washington last month, the US President, Barack Obama, warned that while al-Qaeda would fill the vacuum if Afghanistan collapsed, the terrorist group was already rooted in Pakistan, plotting more attacks on the US.
“The safety of people round the world is at stake,” he said.
Laying out the scale of the challenges facing the US in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Dr Kilcullen put the two countries invaded by US-led forces after the September 11 attacks on the US on a par - each had a population of more than 30 million.“But Pakistan has 173 million people and 100 nuclear weapons, an army which is bigger than the American army, and the headquarters of al-Qaeda sitting in two-thirds of the country which the Government does not control,” he told the *Herald *.Added to that, the Pakistani security establishment ignored direction from the elected Government in Islamabad as waves of extremist violence spread across the whole country - not only in the tribal wilds of the Afghan border region.Cautioning against an excessive focus by Western governments on Afghanistan at the expense of Pakistan, Dr Kilcullen said that “the Kabul tail was wagging the dog”. Comparing the challenges in the two, he said Afghanistan was a campaign to defend a reconstruction program. “It’s not really about al-Qaeda. Afghanistan doesn’t worry me. Pakistan does.”
But he was hesitant about the level of resources for, and the likely impact of, Washington’s new drive to emulate an Iraq-style “surge” by sending an extra 21,000 troops to Afghanistan."In Iraq, five brigades went into the centre of Baghdad in five months. In Afghanistan, it will be two combat brigades [across the country] in 12 months. That will have much less of a punch effect than we had in Iraq."We can muddle through in Afghanistan. It is problematic and difficult but we know what to do. What we don’t know is if we have the time or if we can afford the cost of what needs to be done."Dr Kilcullen said a fault line had developed in the West’s grasp of circumstances on each side of the Durand Line, the disputed border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

"In Afghanistan, it’s easy to understand, difficult to execute. But in Pakistan, it is very difficult to understand and it’s extremely difficult for us to generate any leverage, because Pakistan does not want our help.
“In a sense there is no Pakistan - no single set of opinion. Pakistan has a military and intelligence establishment that refuses to follow the directions of its civilian leadership. They have a tradition of using regional extremist groups as unconventional counterweights against India’s regional influence.”
In the absence of a regional diplomatic initiative to build economic and trade confidences before tackling the security issue, the implication, Dr Kilcullen said, was that India alone could not give Pakistan the security guarantees Islamabad required.

The special US envoy Richard Holbrooke has been charged with brokering a regional compact by reaching out to Iran, Russia and China, and Dr Kilcullen said: "This is exactly what he’s good at and it could work
“But will it? It requires regional architecture to give the Pakistani security establishment a sense of security which might make them stop supporting the Taliban,” he said.“The best case scenario is that the US can deal with Afghanistan, with President Obama giving leadership while the extra American troops succeed on the ground - at the same time as Mr Holbrooke seeks a regional security deal,” he said. The worst case was that Washington would fail to stabilise Afghanistan, Pakistan would collapse and al-Qaeda would end up running what he called ‘Talibanistan.’“This is not acceptable. You can’t have al-Qaeda in control of Pakistan’s missiles,” he said.“It’s too early to tell which way it will go. We’ll start to know about July. That’s the peak fighting season … and a month from the Afghan presidential election.”

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

^^ months...I say weeks....

already they have taken Buner and soon Islamabad will fall

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

^ and the worst part, people are loving it.
Most just bend over to anybody who
1. uses religion's name
2. goes ballistic against western powers

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

we’ve been hearing these news for a while now. every 6 months the deadline to disintegration is extended. :hehe:

let me know when it gets serious, till then keep your eyes close and keep dreaming cuz it ain’t happenin!!

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

^^ thats what people said when we lost East Pakistan

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

well our enemies haven't changed much since then, the aid from USA never arrived to help us when we needed it back then, India was busy fueling the fire in what is now Bangladesh, and in today's terms Balochistan.

so, it's not that i don't have a genuine concern for the well-being of Pakistan, i just don't think Pakistan is going to collapse or a situation will arise where our assets will be sitting there in a basket all for the taking as a booty. that perception is false. Pakistan has in its past seen many occurances where some feared "this would be the end of it" but it was not. i don't believe this is either.

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

Yeh last time we just lost half of Pakistan only, lets see what now :)

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

Lets see :)

so should we talk about this same time next year when Pakistan is still standing together? or will we keep changing our "see it through" dates depending on new reports that keep saying "a few more months"

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

If you guys think Pakistan military is going to sit back and watch Taliban take over Pakistan then you are mistaken. If they ever try to do this they'll be sent back to the 15th century.

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

Kiyani had a chat with US military leadership as well. My view is if this escalates, a massive coordinated effort will be needed.

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

Let's just hope this is true because it is all deeply disturbing and a great concern to all of us. Our very existence is under threat

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

They have already sat back and let them take over Swat and Buner

Do you have any idea what kind of economic blow this is to Pakistan

People from all over the world came to Swat to ski, hike the mountains and view the prestine valley

If they can allow a national treasure like Swat to fall to Taliban they are going to continue to sit back and keep all their guns trained on India while Taliban take over the rest of Pakistan

Pretty soon the Pakistani Military will be a military without a country

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

Who will be sent back to the 15th century ? :p

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

You didn't get the point, Sir we have deep down problems of extremistism in our society. Its killing us from inside, we don't need any external enemy.

If the current trend continue, then let me assure you, the State of Pakistan will be limited to Punjab only, .. the recent example's are: FATA, SWAT & now Buneir is not under the state of Pakistan. Am i wrong??

People don't know after Buneir their is Tarbela dam, and then Islamabad. I feel pity that people of Pakistan don't understand the gravity of situation. If Taliban's start march towards Tarbela then let me assure you a big military offensive will be started with-in days against this mence, and the colletral damage will be huge we are talking about: millions here. War has been came to settled area's cities like swat already well, now buneir, Malakand divison, .. until when we will living in dreams?

If at this moment of history, nation of Pakistan didn't make-up their mind, Pakistan will be only found in history books. The end :)

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

Are you kidding?

The Pakistani Army and its officer corps thinks that these people are our assets.

They guard our frontiers in Afghanistan and have fought a proxy war in Kashmir against India

The problem is that Pakistani Army Officers are too stupid to realize that they have created a Frankenstein Monster which they are unable to control

It has happened to other nations as well

China supported the Viet Cong during the Vietnam war and then China and Vietnam had a war in 1979 in which 100,000 Chinese Soldiers were killed

Same thing happened to USA and the Afghan Mujahadeen

Jordan and the PLO in 1970

Pakistani Army needs to realize that they can never conquer Kashmir by force and nor can they dominate Afghanistan. They need to fix this disaster of a country called Pakistan and that starts by eliminating these Taliban Animals.

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

WTF? .. you gotta me kidding me that's the comments you have in this shyt environment, when we are losing our land to thugs

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

If Tarbela fall, i am gonna get out my family from Pakistan, that's it. Enough, of the bullshyt by our military leaders, they have to speak up ..can they control this menace or not.

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

Thank god my parents had the brains to leave Pakistan when they did....

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

we can still win the war.... government should held a round table conferece of all the parties, built concenses, take ulmas, civil society and more importantly media on bourd.

Taliban should be declared traitors and rebals.governhment should issue dead line to lay down.... arms,...army parades should be held in cities.

People should shower troops with rose petals and make them believe, whole nation is with them .

Media should play national anthem and patriotic songs.young people of pakistan should offer their services to fight voluntarily against Taliban.

Re: Pakistan is in danger of collapse within months

I am afraid you will not find legs to run from the heaven where your parents brought you, just wait for the day.
