Pakistan, India agree to enhance cooperation in environment sector.
ISLAMABAD, Feb 8 (APP): Pakistan and India Friday agreed to enhance cooperation in the field of environment and further pursue the decisions taken by the Technical Advisory Committee already constituted between both the neighboring countries. Both the countries reached this decision in a meeting held in Delhi between Syed Wajid Hussain Bokhari, Minister for Environment, Local Government and Rural Development and Narno Naryan, Indian Minister of State for Environment and Forest.
The two sides decided to share experiences and best practices in lakes, rivers and vulture preservation as well as in Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) to prevent environmental degradation in South Asia.
Environment Minister Wajid Bokhari told media persons that a regional conference on environment will be held in Pakistan in a couple of months where representatives from SAARC countries will present their proposals to make South Asia free of pollutants.
Later, speaking at an International Conference on Sustainable Development and Climate Change organized by ‘The Energy Resources Institute’, an international NGO, the Minister said, preserving nature and combating environmental degradation caused by human activities, is the common responsibility of all inhabitants of the planet.
“The economic endeavors of poverty alleviation need to be broadened to address the degraded environmental and social conditions being faced by the developing countries due to climate change,” he said Referring to Pakistan, the Minister said, despite low emissions, Pakistan belongs to category of regions which will be worst hit by the climate change.
“Climate change is causing irrevocable damages like glaciers melting, reduction in crop yields, shortening of growing cycle of crops and surge in insects, pests and diseases,” he said.
Describing the conference as an historic opportunity, the Minister said it should be seized to arrest the worsening environmental conditions.
