Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

Pakistan hunt for bowling talent
Pakistan has launched a Pop Idol-style hunt for talented fast bowlers to face England later this year.

The Pakistan Cricket Board will hold trials in 10 cities across Pakistan and the best fast bowlers outside first-class competition will be picked.

“We need to have a better combination of fast bowlers and need to explore more talent,” said Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq.

Six selected bowlers will join the national camp for the England series.

Pakistan have struggled to select a consistent pace attack since the retirement of 1990s greats Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

The Ashes series has generated a lot of hype and interest and after England’s performances we expect the same when they tour Pakistan
Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman

Shoaib Akhtar, the world’s fastest bowler but has been plagued by injuries, as has Mohammad Sami.

Another front-line pace bowler, Shabbir Ahmed, can only feature in the series against England if his action is cleared by the International Cricket Council in time.

The talent scouts, a team of former Test players headed by national selector Ehteshamuddin will start the search in Quetta on 20 September.

The final selection will be in Lahore on 16 and 17 October.

And the first Test against England begins in Multan on 12 November.

Pakistani authorities expect the tour to draw crowds and generate more revenue following their Ashes victory.

“The Ashes series has generated a lot of hype and interest and after England’s performances we expect the same when they tour Pakistan,” said the PCB’s Saleem Altaf

"I think we will have a lot of interest in the series and there should be more sponsorship and crowd participation.

“People will want to see Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison in action.”

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

Desperate times require despearate actions? I disagree. If this is planning for the England series, well then this seems a little bit of a desperate attempt for a home side which has plenty of available talent (Shoaib, Sami, Gul, Shahid Nazir, Rana, Yasir Arafat, etc etc). Its about time PCB realized they have players who can deliver, recognize their talent and committment and treat them with the respect they have earned.

If this trend of discarding hard work and committment is ignored then Iam afraid there will be many more Mohd Akram's, Saqlain Mushtaq's and Mush Ahmeds applying for immigration in other countries.

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

looks like Inzi wants some other "quickies" as we already have some medium pacers indicated by fartguru.

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

Inzi doing what he does best ie looking for excuses…

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

excuses? The series has not started yet. Stop your biased comments on Inzimam.
We do need geniune fast bowlers to back Shoaib and Sami up. Fast bowlers get injured everywhere in the world, but only those with backups continue with confidence. Bret Lee was away for a long long time, but Kasprowicz has filled that position very well. Now tait is also in line. Same with Harmison, Hoggard, SP Jones and Flintoff. They do have backups. Where as Pakistan had to step down to medium pacer, not even fast mediums, which is not so great against the top teams. So in case if Shoaib or Sami are not fit for a match in the middle of a series, we have a geniune fasty to replace as the new guy will get support from other fastie and the medium pacers.

While we are at it, I must say THEY SHOULD CHECK THE BOWLING ACTION OF THE NEW FASTIES FIRST, RIGHT AT THE TRIAL GROUND. A WATTA SHOULD NOT MAKE TO GADDHAFI STADIUM FOR TRAINING.

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

Aray Chiknay bhai (smooth guy), pleeeze take off those shades u wear cause u fail to see the context and reference of discussion. Read all the comments then form an opinion, Iam sure u will feel better. If that doesnt work, try Hajmulla or Carmina churan kee tikya, one b4 sleeping and then let it rock…

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

we need a solid batsman i think, we have an excellent pace attack, which when all fit and have a good combination bowling with younis captaining the side with an attacking field can be destructful i think, now i really do think we need a solid batsman who can bat 2 days, plz get rid of yousuf youhana and replace him with either misbah ul haq who never gets a real chance to prove his talent all they do is make him captain of A team. Also people are rating hasan raza high! we have to have a combination of young and experienced, i think this england series should be make or brake for yousuf youhana!

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

one of my friends just told me that this search is similar to what india has introduced recently? is this true? do you guys have any knowledge abt this ?

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

I am quite surprised by this decision because Mohammad Irshad seems to be doing well plus Abdul Rauf is a decent pacemen too.

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

fartie, i know that you know the karmina/hajmola effectiveness very well, as your name suggest. Only the first line was for you, the rest of the comments were made on the artical in the opening post.

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

I agree, they should actually hold “training camps” for the talent pool we already have, instead of spending resources on finding a “talent” we haven’t seen.

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

Is this going to be telecasted or something?

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

The "talent hunt" has begun... lets see what we get at the end of this exercise!

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

Good to know that the cheap internet forum humour, as lame as it maybe, is still alive and kicking.

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

The fastest bowler has been clocked at 84.6 mph... not a good sign... i hope we do find some faster onez here... even Razzaq has been clocked higher than that and he is a med-fast pacer...whatever happened to that guy Mohammad Zahid, he was pretty quick.. i thought he could bowl even faster than Shoaib..
are these tryouts taking place thruout the country or what??

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

Wouldn't be a bad idea if Geo or some other channel sponsors it and let the public decide who is the best bowler amongst the pool.

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

well how old are these guys? if they are too young then one may expect an increase in their speed with the time but why the hell is speed the only criteria for their selection?

Re: Pakistan hunt for bowling talent

no kidding. That’s almost in the hindian territory. 84.6:eek: That’s blinding speed for the darkie bala subramaniumplutoniumuraniumrajnishraokanta the veggie from southern hindia, but are you freakin kidding me. That’s all we can muster up. :rotfl: Talk about embarrassing.
