Sour grapes? sigh Typical Pakistani mentality. Question the credibility of a person at a job he does not do well all of a sudden its a personal issue. I have asked a question through out my posts which nobody has yet to answer. What experience of his qualifies him for this task?
You never see the US State Dept. British Foreign Office, Russian MOFA, Chinese MOFA appoint non-career diplomats to such high ranking positions. Only Pakistan seems to do it. But yeah lets forget that logic, and not copy what western secular democracies do. Lets just watch a youtube video and base our opinion on that Nope its completely an issue of sour grapes. Completely get that
I am not sure I agree with you on that – often the strangest people get made diplomats…off the top of my head, Shirley Temple was US Ambassador to the UN, Ghana, Czechoslovakia. What credentials did she have for that…her ride on the good ship Lollipop??
Nope. Representative can mean different things. She seems to have been part of the delegation to General Assembly, which means she was part of a 300 man delegation of the US to the UN. 300 is a random figure. But these get very large and consist of everybody from interns to the Secretary of State. Sure its a big deal but it lasts only 3 months - Sept to Dec. And they don't really do much. They usually give the opening statements at plenary sessions and wait on the embassy team that does negotiations.
Nobody save for career diplomats are allowed to negotiate and draft documents.
@CM - I was just surprised you had such strong feelings about this. As I ponted out some has indeed listed his accomplishments and experience. That seems quite impressive if you are objective about it and relax your "must have been a career diplomat". I just don't understand why you keep saying he doesn't have prior experience.
The sour grape comment was in total jest and hope you didn't take it any more seriously than it was meant.
I am one of those guys who believes you don't need military men and politicians friends doing the job of people who do this for a career. There have been countless times where such upstarts have screwed over relations for Pakistan. They make inappropriate statements and make promises they can not keep. Regardless of what I think of Hussien Haqqani he is a stellar diplomat with the ability to play is role very well. I do not agree with his statements or the comments he makes. But he has the aptitude to judge the situation rather well.
The same can not be said for the UN Ambassador. I know personally of situations were we lost crucial votes because he didn't care to proceed with the matter.
we have seen plenty of ppl with the 'right' background not do too well when it comes to Pakistan, diplomats as well as politicians, maybe getting a fresh perspective from someone who is not part and parcel of the inbred bureaucratic culture is a good thing, who knows.
as far as all that pakistan has lost in the last few years all around, its not that it has been getting great press on events taking place there
