Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

Of course not  He just happened to get a cushy job in New York with the UN based on his stellar understanding of geopolitics and his brilliant analytical mind

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

obviously I don’t know anything about him other than what he said on TV. In addition to this one about UNSC I had seen him being interviewed on npr(?) on youtube where he was quite passionate. He claimed credit for Pakistan for ending vietnam war, the cold war and everything else except the trojan war - but he was passionate and articulate doing that.

My reason was pointing hi out is, such a one sided Pakistani official saying ‘enough abo0ut Kashmir’ when asked is hopefully a sign that the govt of Pakistan is finally realizing and moving away from the usual allegations and false claims on the subject

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

Thanks. But I knew about a bunch of that. He is by trade a business man with no political acumen or any knowledge of International Diplomacy, multilateral negotiations or real politik. Our standing in the UN has actually dropped considerably over the past few years under this Ambassador's leadership.

He was hired for the post specifically of his standing with Zardari when there are many career diplomats who can do a much better job. This is the man who thought a UN commission on BB's death was a good idea and then stated along with Zardari that the UN didn't do a proper job.

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

Maybe this time it's Irans turn :(

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

seems like you have an axe to grind against this man. just look at his accomplishments before zardari came to power.

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

Has he accomplished a great deal. Sure. Is it relevant to the post he got? Nope. Are their more qualified people for the job? Yup. Are any of my statements factually incorrect? Nope.

When you go to a doctor do you look for the one with the experience or the guy who was a chai walla and just got the desire to be a doctor?

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

An ambassador needs to have good manners, excellent social skills, eloquence, and intelligence. He seems to have that. Having good contacts/network is also a plus. He is not there to invent policy or solve a nation's troubles. He is there to smooth things through and to support and implement the policies as laid out by the govt in power.

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

@CM - but Mr.Shamraz Khan has listed an impressive set of accomplishments in #22. Why do you persist he doesn't have any? Is your objection thet he was not a lifelong career diplomat?

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

Abdullah Haroons interviw with CBS… Brilliant, first time I got impressed with a Pakistani diplomat… His answers were on the mark 101 percent.

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

You all say he has accomplished a lot. I don't deny that. But how is it relevant to his current job? I know off the man well enough. Put it this way. In his nearly 4 years in New York he has only the UNSC to show for his work. We have lost most of our election bids in the past 4 years. We lost our seat at ACABQ. We are losing Pakistanis in higher ranking posts in New York on a regular basis. I believe we also lost our bid on the G-77 chairmanship as well.

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

There are many reasons why posts go to this country or that. A lot of politics. A lot of quid pro quo and dealing. Stuff you and I don't know about. The main thing to look at is if he represents the country well. Does he provide a diplomatic, courteous, reliable face to the country as a whole, in the arena of other diplomats and representatives? Does he speak up and express the will of the elected govt of Pakistan? If he does that, then he is doing his job well.

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

3 Years - Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations
4 Years - UN staff member with DPKO and still here.

I am assuming you can correct me if I am wrong but I would have some insight into the whole thing.

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

Ah, so you have a dog in this fight, then...did you miss out on a promotion?

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

Nah not part of the Foreign Office. I was just hanging on as an adviser at the mission till got the UN gig. Building contacts and such. It was fun while I was there. But enjoy field work far more. Actually see real change and how the UN helps people.

Re: Pakistan gets seat in UN security Council

^ aha! that explains the case of sour grapes perhaps. Hang in there dude, may be your time comes in future and I'll get to say "yeah, I used to know the Pak ambassador during the gupshup days". Just remember I can use some parking spots in Manhattan!
