Torrential rains and the ensuing floods killed above 144 people and inundated several villages in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Emergency has been imposed in the flood-hit areas of the province and many flood-affected areas have been declared ‘calamity-hit’.

Heavy rains wreaked havoc in the province while the flash flood disrupts Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s communication with Punjab through GT Road.

The rain nullahs and rives flooded as a result of which several houses collapsed and scores of people died. The floods submerged some 500 houses of Budhni and Camp Korona areas of Peshawar, while 40 houses of Chanar Colony, Mingora deluged. He said that party with the help of local administration of the flood-hit areas is working to supply food and provide shelter to homeless people. He said that extreme weather conditions are difficult to handle and it is also difficult to manage in developed nations.

Pakistan Death Toll From Northwest Flash Floods, Heavy Rain Rises to 408

Pakistan’s death toll from flash floods and heavy rains in the northwest has risen to 408 and may climb further as thousands are still stranded in the region’s worst storms.

“The final toll will be much higher than we are estimating now,” Provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said at a news conference in Peshawar today. The toll has risen from 46 deaths 36 hours ago.

The death toll is on top of the 152 people who died when a plane crashed in heavy rains near the capital two days ago. Homes and bridges collapsed in the rain, live electric wires fell into the water and families were swept away in the floods.

“The relief efforts of everyone combined is only five percent of what’s required,” Mujahid Khan, a spokesman for the Edhi Rescue Service, said by telephone from Peshawar today. “We can see people drowning but we can’t go into the water because of its high pressure.”

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani took an aerial tour of the province today and ordered his government to rescue people and provide food supplies to those at safe locations.

Floods may reach the southern province of Sindh within the next few days, federal Information Minister Sumsam Bokhari said at a news conference in Islamabad today. The Sindh government has ordered people living along the banks of the River Indus to be evacuated.

Army Troops

Army troops equipped with life jackets, motorboats and heavy rafts were called in yesterday to help move families to safe locations, the military said in a statement on its web site.

Pakistani television channels showed images of people grabbing onto wreckage on flooded roads to keep from being swept away by the water, drowning goats and buffalo, and makeshift boats.

“All the houses in my village have been destroyed and now it’s simply a fight for survival for us,” Mehmood Khan, a tribal elder, said by telephone from Wana, South Waziristan. “Food supplies have started to run out. We haven’t eaten in 48 hours and the scant food supplies we saved for women and children may not last long.”

The districts of Nowshera, Charsadda, Peshawar, Swat, Lower Dir and the worst affected, according to the government.

The water level in the River Swat crossed 250,000 cusecs yesterday, the highest since 1929, according to the National Disaster Management Agency in Islamabad.

The first spell of the monsoon started on July 22 and affected the western province of Baluchistan, the disaster authority said.

That must be an awful feeling. Thats a very high figure. I wish the damage is nowhere near as bad as claimed. That will be wishful thinking though. This looks like its going to be a bad one.

Im sure at least 2 of the last 5 Monsoons have had such incidents. In 2006 quite a few people died due to torrential monsoon rains in KP. In 2007 Balochistan around Mekran was very badly affected by floods.

Its not been a good week. A lot of lives have been lost.

Its clear that there will be problems with torrential rain in KP during the Monsoon in the future. Management of this problem will be a huge task.

So many people must have watched their loved ones drown or disappear in the floods. Its heart breaking thinking about it.

I feel for pakhtunwa i dont want to belittle or derail this thread but look at the following facts and threads.

Over 800 dead due to flooding: Mian Iftikhar

Saturday, 31 Jul, 2010

NOWSHERA: Flooding in Pakistan has killed more than 800 people in a week, a government official said Saturday as rescuers struggled to reach marooned victims and some evacuees showed signs of fever, diarrhea and other waterborne diseases.

The flooding caused by record-breaking rainfalls caused massive destruction in the past week, especially in the northwest province, where officials said it was the worst deluge since 1929. The UN estimated Saturday that some 1 million people nationwide were affected by the disaster, though it didn’t specify exactly what that meant.

The information minister for the northwest province, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, said reports coming in from various districts across the northwest showed that more than 800 people had died due to the flooding. Many people remain missing.

Floodwaters were believed to be receding in some sections, but it was difficult to get a complete picture.

In the Nowshera area, scores of men, women and children sat on roofs in hopes of air or boat rescues.

‘‘There are very bad conditions,’’ said Amjad Ali, a rescue worker in the area. ‘‘They have no water, no food.’’

A doctor treating evacuees at a small relief camp in Nowshera said some had diarrhea and others had marks appearing on their skin, causing itching. Children and the elderly seemed to have the most problems, Mehmood Jaa said.

‘‘Due to the floodwater, they now have pain in their bodies and they are suffering from fever and cough,’’ Jaa told The Associated Press.

Rescuers were using army helicopters, heavy trucks and boats to try reaching flood-hit areas, the UN said. It reported that thousands of homes and roads were destroyed, and at least 45 bridges across the northwest were damaged.

The destruction is slowing the rescue effort, said Luther Rehman, a government official in Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa, the northwest province.

‘‘Our priority is to transport flood-affected people to safer places. We are carrying out this rescue operation despite limited resources,’’ he said, adding they needed more helicopters and boats.

ye to abhi hmari hakumat bht km amount btati hai. asal death toll might be more than one thousand which is not told yet like 5 Lac death toll of Oct 2005 earthquake, which was corruptly told about nearly 70,000 by our corrupt govt.

re: Pakistan floods affected 13.8 Million: UN

I am new to this web site and I want to say I really find this the most informative site I have ever found regarding Paskistan and the people. I am going to be visiting Pak in October to finally meet my in-laws and I am so worried about them all!

I have been so busy working on a huge job site (we have a constructiopn company), and I have not had time in the past 3 weeks to watch any news at all! My fiance who is working in Kuwait right now has not mentioned one thing about these rains! The last time he mentioned it was about 3 weeeks ago when I was complaining about the continual rain here in the mid-west (Wisconsin) and he was mentioning that his mother had been complaining about the same weather in their village.

I feel terrible! Their village is approximately 15 minutes west of Pehawar near Kyhber Pass, and having never visited there yet, I have no idea where that is in conjunction with these flooded areas! Anyone who knows can you please share the information? I know you don't know exactly where the village is but if you could esitate I would appreciate it. I know that the village is also just to the north of Jamrüd Bazaar. Thank you for any information!

re: Pakistan floods affected 13.8 Million: UN

By the way, I wanted to mention that my fiance will not mention these flooded areas, not because he does not care, or that he does not want to share this information with me, but because, I, like his Mother, have a tendency to cry easily at issues of human suffering, and he will not want to upset me!

(just didn't want you all to get the wrong impression. Being Afridi Pashtun, he is very protective and does not like to see us suffer emotionally.) Hmmmm, I sound like a bragging, young bride! Well, I guess I am , he is wonderful!!)

Salamoona sanaa have not heard anything specific about jamrud being affected
The areas hardest hit have been at lower levels
But individual areas may differ depending on type of houses the frontier post might have a bit more local info

re: Pakistan floods affected 13.8 Million: UN

Welcome to GS,
Around Peshawar and Jamrud area are relatively safe(talking about floods only...) except area on the bank of Bara River. Mostly affected area is around Noshera where Kabul and Swat River connect. That area is very low hence getting more floods. I think that is the one reason KP opposes Kalabagh Dam.
