re: Pakistan floods affected 13.8 Million: UN
those of us sitting miles away can help by supporting organizations providing relief efforts there.
I know back in the 2005 earthquake days we had pulled together a list and links of these groups, I will try to locate that thread, but requesting others do the same to find and post that or new information.
re: Pakistan floods affected 13.8 Million: UN

I feel for pakhtunwa i dont want to belittle or derail this thread but look at the following facts and threads. Plane crash in Margalla ..near islamabad where 100+ people were killed in an accident: [Thread date], [numbers of views], [replies]. [Jul 28th 2010 12:41 AM] [1,661] [101] For the flash Flash flood, natural disater that killed 400+ people and one where the state has atleast some control to reduce misery/death/suffering! [Thread date] [numbers of views] [replies] [Jul 29th 2010, 11:43 AM ] [121] [9] This is a shame!
I don't think it has much to do with KP, probably because plane crash happened earlier and lot of focus was on that. Flood deaths weren't much reported as much, the toll was low, though it has leapt after that. We need to focus on how we can help the flood victims.

Lower Sindh faces big threat
PESHAWAR: The death toll from massive floods in northwestern Pakistan rose to 1,100 Sunday as rescue workers struggled to save more than 27,000 people still trapped by the raging water, officials said.
The rescue effort has been aided by a slackening of the monsoon rains that have caused the worst flooding in decades in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. But as flood waters have started to recede, authorities have begun to understand the full scale of the disaster.
‘‘Aerial monitoring is being conducted, and it has shown that whole villages have washed away, animals have drowned and grain storages have washed away,’’ said Latifur Rehman, spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. ‘‘The destruction is massive and devastating.’’
The toll from the flooding could go higher since rescue workers have been unable to access certain areas, said Adnan Khan, a disaster management official.
Almost 700 people have drowned in the Peshawar valley, which includes the districts of Nowshera and Charsadda, and 115 others are still missing, Khan said.
The districts of Swat and Shangla have also been hit hard and have suffered more than 400 deaths, said Mujahid Khan, the head of rescue services for the Edhi Foundation.
In Swat alone, the floods have destroyed more than 14,600 houses and 22 schools, said Khan.
Authorities have deployed 43 military helicopters and over 100 boats to try to rescue some 27,300 people still trapped by the floods, said Rehman, the disaster management spokesman.
‘‘All efforts are being used to rescue people stuck in inaccessible areas and all possible help is being provided to affected people,’’ said Rehman.
But some residents stepped up their criticism of the government’s response on Sunday.
‘‘The flood has devastated us all, and I don’t know where my family has gone,’’ said Hakimullah Khan, a resident of Charsadda town who complained the government has not helped him search for his missing wife and three children.
‘‘Water is all around and there is no help in sight,’’ said Khan.
The military has deployed 30,000 army troops who have helped rescue more than 20,700 people, said Khan, the disaster management official.
But the UN has estimated that one million people nationwide have been affected by the floods, and the scale of the disaster has strained the resources of a government already grappling with a faltering economy and a brutal war against the Taliban.
Even people like Sehar Ali Shah who were rescued by the government complained that authorities didn’t provide shelter that would allow them to stay until the flood waters receded.
‘‘My son drowned, but I don’t see the government taking care of us,’’ said Shah after returning to his half-submerged house in the city of Nowshera. ‘‘The government has not managed an alternate place to shift us.’’
The flooding has also affected the province of Punjab, where troops have rescued over 1,400 people trapped by the rising water, said Brig. Ahmad Waqas.
‘‘We have lost everything: our houses, our crops, cattle,’’ said Ahmad Hasan at a government relief camp in Taunsa Sharif district.
The threat of disease loomed as well as some evacuees in the northwest arrived in camps with fever, diarrhoea and skin problems.
‘‘There is now a real danger of the spread of waterborne diseases like diarrhoea, asthma, skin allergies and perhaps cholera in these areas,’’ said Shaharyar Bangash, the head of operations in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for World Vision, an international humanitarian group.
A variety of nations and aid organisations have begun to mobilize a response to the flood disaster.
The US delivered thousands of food packages, four rescue boats and two water filtration units to the northwest, said Rehman, the disaster management spokesman.
‘‘This is much needed stuff in the flood-affected areas and we need more of it from the international community,’’ said Rehman.
The US Embassy in Islamabad has also announced it will provide 12 prefabricated steel bridges to temporarily replace some of the spans damaged by the water.
But some residents wondered how they would ever recover from such a disaster.
‘‘I won’t be able to cover my losses for 10 years,’’ said Shair Dad, a timber shop owner in Nowshera who lost most of his wood in the floodwaters.

Flood death tally mounts to 1300
PESHAWAR: The number of deaths caused by surging flash floods and lashing downpours in the country, skidded past 1300 thus far, Geo News reported Sunday.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has waived off all provincial taxes, Punjab lifted agricultural tax and Balochistan announced to write off all agri-loans.
At least 800 people hitherto lost their lives in rains and flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
At least eight hotels and over 300 houses were swept away in floodwater. Also, massive havoc was wrought in Swat and Shangla, where link bridges and thousands of houses were washed away.
Eleven members of the same family were killed when the roof of their houses came down on them in Kabal area of Dardial.
The province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the worst hit in the recent flooding, as over 567 houses were absolutely razed down to ground by flash floods, 90 highways were damaged, 58 big thoroughfares were closed for traffic; while, 104 people are still unaccounted for.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said 12 teams have been constituted for rescue efforts.
The same spell of devastations triggered by driving rains and subsequent flooding, is in full swing in Punjab, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir, where 494 people were killed, raising the overall death toll in the country.
The United Nations said the rains and floods affected over one million people.
According to the statement of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), besides Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 37 were killed in Punjab, 19 in Balochistan, 32 in Azad Kashmir and at least six people had to lose their lives in Gilgit-Baltistan in floods.
