PHF urges FIH to raise Asia’s quota for Junior World Cup

KARACHI, July 17: Pakistan on Thursday urged the International Hockey Federation (FIH) to review their policy about the number of teams’ qualification for next year’s 9th Men’s Junior World Cup Hockey, to be staged jointly in Malaysia and Singapore.

The plea came from Secretary Pakistan Hockey Federation, Asif Bajwa.

Earlier, the FIH had announced that the top six teams from the Men’s Junior Asia Cup Hockey at Hyderabad, India would qualify for the World Cup. However, since four teams pulled out among the twelve participants, the FIH announced that in view of reduced number of teams they would decide the number of qualifiers from the ongoing Junior Asia Cup.

The two finalists Korea and India are certain to qualify along with two host nations Malaysia and Singapore but the fate of the other two — Pakistan and Japan — hangs in balance till the final decision will be taken at the FIH meeting during the Olympic Games in Beijing next month.

“No doubt it’s a big blow for Pakistan hockey,” said Asif, “but as far as Asian hockey is concerned Pakistan, if it fails to make to the World Cup, will serve a big blow to this region where hockey is already struggling. Already India’s ouster from the Olympic hockey has pushed the hockey downward in this region and if Pakistan doesn’t make it to this Junior World Cup, hockey will suffer immeasurably at international level.”

“Therefore, I would like to ask the FIH to take stock of the situation and increase the number of qualifiers from this Junior Asia Cup,” he concluded.

Re: Pakistan fail to qualify for the Junior Mens World Cup

Hockey is quickly dying up in Pakistan. It would be hard to find Pakistan in international competitions after 2015.

It can not be revived by FIH allowing a mercy quota for Pakistan. Thats a ridiculous thing to demand.

Re: Pakistan fail to qualify for the Junior Mens World Cup

Pakistan and India should try Icehockey if they want to fight instead of playing. They would be allowed to fight :D I bet we would see some body checks we have yet to see in the NHL.

No not yet. FIH will decide it during its congress in Beijing next month.

Re: Pakistan fail to qualify for the Junior Mens World Cup

Initially 12 teams were to participate in Asia Junior Cup and FIH had alloted 6 spots for next year's Asia region. But eventually only 8 teams participated in the Junior Asia Cup. So FIH is likely to reduce the number of places available for Asia in the Junior Asia World Cup. As at least 20 countries are taking part in the Eurpean Junior Championship, so they deserve more places in the World Cup.

So only a mercy quota can take Pakistan to next years World Cup now.

For the last 15 years or so Indian Juniors have been shinning in hockey but I wonder what happens them when they come into the senior team?

Look India is no longer in the olympics!

Junior Worlfd Hockey would have 20 teams this time and Pakistan can make it if Asia is allowed to have 5 teams. Right now it is Malaysia/Singapore(hosts), and Korea/India.

Anyways this is much smaller news as compared to India not qualifying for the Olymics for the first time in its hockey history.

I think there was a big concern this time and some teams even protested that India had played a lot of overage players. Many players of Junior team even play in the senior indian team.

That’s not true, Euro JWC qualifier has 8 teams and this is the main qualifying tournament from where 6 teams would qualify for the JWC to be played jointly in Singapore/Malaysia. This qualifier is being palyed in San Sebastian, Spain.

POOL B: Scotland, Poland, Germany and Belgium.

POOL A: England, Holland, Austria and Spain.

This is called Euro Hockey Junior Championship.

Then there are other second tier teams that play in Euro Hockey Trophy(being played in Italy) and third tier teams that play in Euro Hockey Challenge(was to be played in Azerbaijan) respectively. Teams from these tournaments would then qualify for the next years Euro Championship Tournamen(above one).

Look at these web sites:

For Euro Hockey Championship being played in Spain(main qualifying tournament for U-21 WC):

For Euro Hockey Trophy in Italy (Teams are Belarus, Ukraine, Turkey, Russia, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, Czech Rep, Italy, France and Wales):

The Euro Hockey Challenge in Azerbaijan was finally cancelled as all teams withdrew except for Turkey and Azerbaijan and they were then played in the EHT in Italy.

Re: Pakistan fail to qualify for the Junior Mens World Cup

Thanks for the correction. But still you can see that there is a competition for the 8 nations JWC qualifier. And there are many more teams involved in the European Junior Championship. This is not the case with Asia where there are few numbers of teams and that too withdraw at the last moment.
