Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
Looking at the crap that goes on in Pakistan, it only means two things, either majority of Pakistano born desis are confused as hell themselves in one way or another..or...what goes on in Pakistan is part and parcel of someone being a real 100% authentic Pakistani.
innit?
firadiyay,
you are taking it way too personally.
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
as a foreigner, i tend to see pakistanese as a mulitucultural assemblage of people (panjabi, urdu speaking, pashto, sindhi, balotch, kashmiri...) with different languages and customs, who share the same flag and national destinee. What makes pakistan, Pakistan? hmmmm, those ethnies ahve some ties, past or present, but the unifying principle is Islam...but confusion about the different appraoches, some say sects, of Islam (sunni, shias...) is bringing some confusion to the lovely picture of islamnic republic of Pakistan.
Urdu is the national language, but i find it rather easy to understand musharraf talking because he mixes so much english in his talks, is that confusing?
there are no norms to define pakistan, and there should not be, because every nation, every people is evolving, pakistan and pakistanese are adapting to a changing world, and that is nice. More and more western lifetsyles are getting into the daily pakistani life and that can be wrong too...but no one is perfect and sometimes you gotta make mistake to realise later on that you were wrong. americanisation of pakistan was very obvious to me when i came from peshawar to karachi, but the "evil" has been going on in my own country for 50 years and guess what, we are more and more getting rid of it, and it has not yet killed our own traditions...so i hope pakistan is only modernising and will get the best out of it, without loosing its spicy and colorfull image. It is up to you all in pakistan!

Brilliant postings Fradia.
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
I'm a PBCD as well because when I go to Pakistan I understand the language but I don't understand the customs.
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
This whole ‘ABCD’ or ‘FOB’ is as stupid a generalization as it can get. Last weekend I met some friends who told me about a Friday sermon who repeated something like this for umpteen times “they (America/west) have unwanted teen preganancies, their teens get pregnant when they are 13” etc.
For God’s sake Muslim societies have same problems too. Similarly, we Pakistanis are confused in a different way but look at others from our perspective and say them are ABCDs and vice versa.
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?

i think there are only 2 ways to prosper in life.
1) do not get confused.
2) do not get confused :D
end of story.
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
Let me further explain myself. when we point fingers at a kid born and raised in Toronto who does not act in a manner which is consistent with what some people consider to be with being a Pakistani he is called a confused desi. It can be anything, not speaking his mother tongue, not wearing traditional clothes, not having an interest in his culture whatever.
I am simply wondering if we apply the same magnifying glass to people in general who are living in pakistan and were born and raised there, do there actions meet the threshhold of being ‘not confused’ and displaying all attributes the deviation from which gets foriegnborn desis a label of confused.
This is not limited to burgers or whatever. Are the chichoras on tariq road groping women confused about their identity and what it means to be a Pakistani, what about people following hindu traditions in their weddings.
While I do appreciate your respopnses, I have to clarify that the post is merely an exercise to help some pakistan born pakistanis do some introspection. I have complete confidence in my identity, confused by some people standards or not confused ![]()
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
All pakistanis are confused, period.
Those born in US, England..are caught up between desi culture and western culture.
Those born in Pakistan are caught up between, what are true Islamic values And invading Indian culture (which is being propagated through their media).
Those born in the Middle East are the most confused, the land in which they were born and bred wouldn't even give them a passport. They are deprived of all the rights enjoyed by arab nationals.
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
The same type of confusion that foriegn born Pakistanis get blamed for.
there are people born and raised in Pakistan who are called burgers by others, because they do not meet the pakistani-ness threshold of those gauging them.
I am trying to find out what is this elusive standard and how many People in Pakistan meet this standard of Pakistani-ness ![]()
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
Personally? not at all, as I have stated before, this is just an exercise in finding out this gauge that is used to measure the pakistani-ness or confused-ness of people and to see how people born and raised in Pakistan meet it in general.
Re: Pakistan Born Confused Desis?
