Pakistan: Bomb kills 10 near Shiite mosque

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — A bomb exploded among worshippers streaming toward a Shiite Muslim mosque in central Pakistan on Thursday, killing 10 people and wounding 30 others, officials said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the blast in the city of Dera Ghazi Khan. Pakistan has suffered a series of recent attacks attributed to sectarian extremists.

The bomb went off as a crowd approached the mosque for an evening prayer ceremony. Television footage showed bystanders and emergency workers trying frantically to help victims lying in the darkened street.
Hasan Iqbal, the city’s top administrator, said 10 people were killed and 30 others wounded.

He said the bomb was apparently detonated by remote control and targeted the Shiite procession, but wouldn’t say whether he believed Sunni extremists were responsible.

Violence is testing relations between Pakistan’s Sunni Muslim majority and Shiite minority just as the country battles rising militancy in the northwest and tension with India over terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November.
Sectarian attacks have been focused in the northwest, where the Taliban and other violent Sunni groups have gained ground.

In December, a car bomb killed 29 people and wounded scores near a Shiite mosque in the regional capital, Peshawar. On Tuesday, a grenade attack killed at least one person at a Sunni mosque in the town of Dera Ismail Khan.

Remote control? That's a new one - usually they suicide bomb instead.

At any rate, this is a horrific and disgusting act of mass murder. As much as I despise our government, I wish it nothing but the very best in establishing security and government writ to bring peace to us all on its own terms.

This is tragic indeed … death toll has gone up to 24 and it seems it was a suicide bomber since they did not find a crater …

America has been successful in crushing terrorism inside its borders. India was successful in Punjab. Its not been given the chance to do that in other parts of the country by politicians with vested interests. Israel is still fighting, so its hard to say what the outcome will be. As for Pakistan, it fights terrorists with one hand and feeds them with the other ;)

Despite the lack of resources, corruption and inefficiency, Pakistani Police have solved many of these cases. The criminals behind this suicide blast are also caught. The source of the cancer in Waziristan remains though, unfortunately.

Two DG Khan suicide attack accused held

DERA GHAZI KHAN: Police claimed on Monday to have arrested two accused involved in the suicide attack on a Shia procession here two months ago.

Addressing a press conference, RPO Khan Mubarik Ali Athar disclosed that Qari Muhammad Ismail and Ghulam Mustafa had planned the attack with Tehrik Taliban Pakistan Commander Baitullah Mehsud in South Waziristan. He said the suicide bomber was identified as 20-year-old Abdullah alias Arshad Pathan of Waziristan. The RPO said that the suicide bomber reached DG Khan on February 4, a day before the attack, and stayed at the residence of Ghulam Mustafa.

The police official claimed the accused had surveyed the route of the procession and prepared its map before the attack. The suicide bomber was taken to a nearby petrol pump on a vehicle and he blew himself up there, killing 27 people and injuring 50 others, he said.

The RPO claimed that Qari Muhammad Ismail was a resident of Vidore Town and allegedly belonged to a banned outfit. He said the accused had confessed to the crime, saying he had taken the revenge of the murder of Maulana Azam Tariq. He added that the terrorists had a big network, which comprised people from Bahawalpur, Multan and Azad Kashmir. He said the accused were also planning to kidnap foreign engineers, attack sensitive installations and public places.

He said Ghulam Mustafa was planning to flee to Dubai as he was working as a sales representative with a pharmaceutical company. He further disclosed that the accused had planned to siege the Dhodak oil and gas plant and had completed their planning.

Qari Ismail had received training from a Jihadi camp in South Waziristan in 2008, he said, adding the Jihadi camp belonged to Commander Qari Imran alias Hakeem Nasir of the Mehsud group while the suicide attack on the procession was planned by the Naib commander of the Baitullah Mehsud group Qari Hassan Ahmed Mehsud.

Khan Mubarik Ali Athar added that the accused had also confessed to killing five Shiites at Kacha Khoh, Khanewal in August 2008. He also claimed that they had recovered sims, maps of sensitive installations and CDs from the accused. However, the police neither presented the accused before the media nor shown the things recovered from them.

Ajju, thanks for keeping on top of these cases because many times you see mullah group claim that no one has ever solved these terrorists attacks and we are all deaf and dumb and don’t really know who the attackers are. The terrorist planners are usually siting next to them. :rolleyes:

It is very sad, we don't know what kind of Islam is being developed in out Countery, which came into being in the name of Islam, but now we find that we are very far away from islamic education, everyone i molding islam into his own interest.

Can we do something to stop this nonsense?
