Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

I’m no fan of censorship, but its strange that western media is condemning this move when Al Jazeera has been blacklisted by cable companies in the US.

Pakistani cable television operators have begun blocking the BBC’s international news TV channel, BBC World News.

The operators say that the move is in response to a documentary broadcast by the channel, entitled Secret Pakistan.

Other foreign TV channels found guilty of broadcasting “anti-Pakistan” content will also be blocked.

The BBC said it was deeply concerned by the move, and called for its channel to be speedily reinstated.

“We condemn any action that threatens our editorial independence and prevents audiences from accessing our impartial international news service,” a BBC spokesperson said.

“We would urge that BBC World News and other international news services are reinstated as soon as possible.”

The two-part BBC documentary questioned the country’s commitment to tackling Taliban militancy.

It argued that some in Pakistan were playing a double game, quoting US intelligence officials as saying that they acted as America’s ally in public while secretly training and arming the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The decision to block BBC World News and other international news channels comes after a media uproar in Pakistan over a Nato air strike that killed 24 Pakistani troops near the Afghan border at the weekend.

The All Pakistan Cable Operators Association announced on Tuesday that all foreign news channels airing “anti-Pakistan” content would be barred from Wednesday.

The operators called on the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) “to revoke the landing rights of foreign channels” if they are found to be “propagating” information harmful to the country.

Relations between Pakistan and the US in particular and the West in general have been strained by the raid - as well as by continuing US drone strikes in Pakistan, the killing of Osama Bin Laden in May and a row over a CIA contractor acquitted earlier this year after killing two men in Lahore.

Correspondents say it is not possible to see BBC World News in most Pakistani cities, with the ban expected to be extended to rural areas by Wednesday.

Cable Operators Association spokesman Khalid Arain said that no foreign anti-Pakistan channel would “ever” be broadcast in the country.

“We want to send them a strong message to stop this. If they don’t stop this, then it is our right to stop them,” he said.

Correspondents say the Pakistani government is likely to have put pressure on the operators to impose the ban.

Good move by cable operators!

If so called democratic West can block TV channels, web sites etc. on one pretext or the other, why cant we do it to safeguard our national interest?

We do not need their propaganda in our country! Go feed your lies to your own public. CNN, FOX etc should also be blocked!

Al-Jazeera may be banned in the US but it isn't in Great Britain. It is openly shown on satellite as is Press TV an Irani government channel, and many Pakistani news channels as well as Islamic channels

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

Ak Jazeera banned? who said? I get Al-Jazeera on the Dish network in the US! I don't watch it but it is there.

Ofcourse the banning of the BBC channel is contemptible. Once press freedom goes, people will have access to info and truth other than what the establishment wants them to know.

Particularly the 'Secret Pakistan' program is a must for all youngsters in Pakistan since it clearly established with evidence how the country played into the hands of terrorists and the support for terrorists afforded by the ISI & Pak military even while they claimed to be working with the NATO on eradication of the same terrorists. It also shows incontrovertible conclusions on ISI involvement in the Indian embassy bombing and the Mumbai attack. I have seen some members here doubting the origins of these attacks, especially the charges that ISI ran them. This program clearly estblishes that.

Youngsters in Pakistan, those that are heavily influenced by the propoganda by the fanatics will find this program eye opening

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

Yeah and how is back home in India?

No censorship?

Anyone can publish the map showing Kashmirs rightful status? (just one of thousand examples)

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

asking me? In India I don't think a channel is banned for publishing truth. Some political party may send a few rowdies and smash up a newspaper office but there is no legal sanction to it.

If the rest of your thousand samples are as invalid as the one you have given, there is nothing to be said. Would Pakistan permit and publish a map that doesn't show Islamabad or Balochistan as a part of it?

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

^^ And that is why the your indian govt. threatens google and other media to "correct" the map or be banned?

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

^ the government has not banned BBC, some people have done that due to the emotions at present...

Pakistan TV was banned in India after Kargil...

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

Exactly!

Their is no official ban on BBC, only cable operators (read corporations) are doing it themselves and why not? They need to earn money and given the sentiments on the street, it will only be unwise to allow Pakistan haters air their propaganda.

I just wanted to show these holly than thou indians how they themselves stand when it comes to their own "national interest".

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

This propaganda is getting old now.

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

Since when is Kashmir not in map of India has to do with Balochistan or Islamabad being with map of Pakistan?.

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

correcting maps makes the maps usable, whether the mistake was made in the map or wrong info was shown in the map due to political agenda. If Kashmir is shown any way other than as part of India, obviously Indian government must get that corrected.

If it is not the Pak government but the cable operators blocking BBC, they should be prosecuted by the govt of Pakistan for racketeering. Why would you support the serving of truth (as was in the Secret Pakistan program) to the people of Pakistan? Such programs will help turn the people of Pakistan against the terrorists. Isn't that what you want?

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

So holly preacher, when are you going to unban Pakistani channels in India? Once you will allow showing the indian state terrorism exposed by independent media in india, come back and we will discuss this issue, till then take a hike. bye bye...

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

How ignorant of you. Kashmir IS disputed territory. I think this is principle stance of Kashmiris as well as Pakistanis. There is NO other way. Indian govt. could have stayed quiet coz at the end of the day..they have failed to act on resolution which was brought by your own previous pm in UN. Do not want to derail this thread but when arrogants like you speak..then you need to be corrected.

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

It seems this particular programme has taken over your life and it is a must see for all, why dont you get CD's made and get it distributed all over the world. It was one biased programme with factual errors in it. watch it again and if you dont see any I suggest you read last ten years history of this conflict again.

As for the freedom of press start from home, remember how Jaswant Singh was treated when he recently praised Jinnah in his book. Where was freedom of press than. All Indians should be asked to read that book so that they can realize the false propaganda taught to them in Indian schools regarding jinnah.

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

I am neither holy nor a preacher. Obviously noone can or is going to force you to read anything you don't want to. Obviously Secret Pakistan has upended deeply held convictions.

Pakistan and separatists funded by Pakistan may feel Indian govt has to do something different. As far as Indians (and that includes Kashmir) are concerned, the only two actions required are to keep preventing terrorists entering from across the border and to continue the economic and social development programmes in place in J&K.

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

Guys back to the topic, the topic has got nothing to do with Kashmir...

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

I sure will watch it again and it hasn't taken over anything. It is a lot simpler to refer people to go watch it on the net. The reason why I am pushing this program is it confirms what people have been saying about how Pak govt institution called the ISI has been behind dastardly terrorist attacks. Lot of people including Indian government has been saying that and all this time I had a;ways taken those as 'charges' which needed to be proven. This shows the proof.

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

^ well isi is not the only organization which will be involved in these kind of activities, CIA and raw have been undertaking these kind of activities as well. This is what the job of intelligence agencies is.

What should Pakistan say about the suspicious activities of the Americans on our border with Afghanistan. They have provided sanctuaries to Pakistani ttp terrorists in eastern Afghanistan. No operation has been carried out against ttp, and now instead of routing them they have attacked Pakistani checkpost. For the past six months in Mohmand several cross border raids have been carried out against Pakistani forces but no action was taken against them.

Re: Pakistan blocks BBC World News TV channel

While these Westerners talk of liberty and openness, and criticize others for what they consider censorship, I have learned that these are mere talks. Their criticism is always political. Otherwise they are as much of a liar, murderer, torturer, war mongers, and perpetrators of censorship as the people they criticize.

But having said that, I don't think stopping BBC is a helpful decision. Their report was full of lies, and the best thing would have been to make documentaries of our own to expose lies in that particular documentary.
This looks like a knee-jerk reaction from people who didn't weigh their options before acting.

What is unfortunate is that we have bounded our own hands by failing to make documentaries/movies of good standard. We don't understand the power of cinema and TV media (and take out time from those soap-operas). And thus we give open field to Indians and others to make whatever false propaganda they like. It is our inability to reply in kind that we end up having such reactions.
