Was it always this way? I don’t recall the seventies and eighties being periods of such hypersensitivity? What has changed?

seventies and eighties was the era when one super power was exploiting Muslims against other super power. That super power then could not afford to leave unattended barking dogs free to attack Muslim sentiments on the name of so called freed of expression.
