actually they did seem to organize a lot to manage the hordes of people that came out, atleast in Karachi. 50 percent of clifton was closed down, police had setup emergency camps with ambulances roaring around, and around midnight the streets of clifton and seaview were jammed. almost as big a crowd as 14th august was around to watch the rather pretty fireworks show (arranged presumably by the city govt). dunno if anything happened after that, i left early.
dont know if theres anything inherently wrong with celebrating new years on January 1st. doesnt show any particular prejudice.. most of these people also celebrate their birthdays on the western calender, and the national day on august 14th.
