One pilot forcibly retired, four grounded in crackdown on beards

Karachi-In a continuing crackdown on any form of Islamic expression in the ranks of the armed forces, the Pakistan Air Force forcibly retired one officer and lined up four others for similar treatment. According to information gathered by the Herald, the officers have been meted out this punishment as a consequence of their refusal to shave off their beards. The action, say sources, has been launched on the specific instructions of Air Chief Kaleem Sadaat.

The drive against beards was initiated recently in line with directives from the high command to rein in fundamentalist elements within the armed forces. In the case of beards, the original stipulation dating back to the colonial period states that no serving personnel can keep facial hair without prior written permission from the high command. This directive was waived during the rule of General Ziaul Haq and remained in effect till its recent revocation. Given the legacy of the Zia years, the move has understandably led to several cases of noncompliance and resultant action by the high command.

In the current case, the five officers in question are all pilots. Squadron Leader Mohsin Hayat Ranjha, the officer forced into retirement, had just returned from the US after completing an advanced fighter course. On his return, Ranjha was first asked to dispense with his beard and on his refusal, was retired prematurely’ on October 12, 2005. Since then, four other officers-Squadron Leader Naveed Riaz, Flight Lieutenant Saqib, Flight Lieutenant Ajmal and Flight Lieutenant Fazl-e-Rabi have been lined up for similar punishment due to their refusal to shave off their beards. All four officers are currently grounded and proceedings have started for their premature retirement. Even more disturbingly, another officer Flight Lieutenant Atif, albeit of the engineering corps, has also been retired forcibly for distributing Quranic verses and sayings of the Holy Prophet (pbuh) among fellow officers.

While the current exercise has been implemented with zeal, it has created widespread resentment among the officers ranks since the action is deemed by most as unnecessary interference in a personal matter. In addition there is an impression that the officers targeted so far were among the most competent, particularly Squadron Leader Ranjha. Ex-air force officers also point out that the officers being hounded out are not just a loss in terms of manpower and expertise but also in terms of the taxpayers money as they have been trained at a cost of millions of rupees. “The officers are at the apex of their careers and have just started to pay back in terms of services what was spent on them,” says Squadron Leader (retd) Khalid Khawaja, who has brought this issue to the public’s attention.

The air force officers imbroglio is the latest in a series of cases involving disobedience and revolt among the ranks of the armed forces. In addition to the well-publicised involvement of air force and army personnel in the assassination attempts on General Musharraf, there is the court martial of six army aviation officers for their refusal to fly sorties in the Waziristan insurgency. Then there is the case of Major Adil Qudoos’ court martial on charges of harbouring 9/11 mastermind Khalid Shaikh Mohammad. While all these instances are far more serious in nature than the recent controversy over beards, the punishments meted out to the officers in question have been accepted only grudgingly by the officer corps.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

Maybe the beards are getting stuck in the controls or equipment of the aircraft like helmet. Safety hazard.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

or maybe this article is BS

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

^ Or maybe your head is empty.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

or maybe it's not.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

terrible, Musharraf's policies have gone too far

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

i dont see anything wrong with the policy. Airforce has everyright to implement it :k:

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

^^ Then I guess Musharraf must be in the military in the seventies as well when M Alam was fired from PAF (actually sidetracked so he left himself) as he went against his drinking and partying officers especially against serving alcohol in the PAF mess.

This is nothing new... Even the "darhis" of many are for show as I found out dari walas taking your darru (wine, whiskey, beer) on turkish flights to karachi.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

...i'll try and research into this.

I dont think the PAF has any reason to prove anything. The british era restriction has long been phased out. and innumerable officers, JCOs & NCOs in the army, navy and air force have beards of varying shapes and sizes.
These disharged officers might have been discharged for some other reason and they coincidentally also had beards.
the 'some other reason' may very well be some proven involvement with what are known as terrorists.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

Surprised to say the least.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

I think it has more to do with the junior PAF officers who wanted to kill the President. Its almost like a personal vendetta, same like he did in October 99, he took over because he was fired, the rest were all excuses.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

People, It is an age old policy of PAF. Laeeq bhai, no need to get emotional, you have researched this before posting the article. I was accepted for PAF back in the day.... they made it very clear during the interview process that beards were not allowed. It has to do with the gear/mask same as you will find in chemical plants where you have to wear the gear that has to fit your face/chin.
Lets not make it an Islamic issue, because its not.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

Is their any credible link for this?

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

It'd be much appreciated if somene can find out about the credibility of the article.

I believe there was a case in Canada where a Sikh individual was not allowed to either grow beard or wear his head gear in the forces. The case was taken to the court and he won.

If Canadian forces can allow religious tolerance, then why is it that Pakistan Airforce is having issues with it?

Besides, it's not like the pilots mentioned were newly hired, rather they've been flying for a while and according to the article are quite competent. If beard wasn't an impediment all along, why has it now become an issue?

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

I can see no link to actual article itself, so there is not much credibility to talk about in the first place. There are at least half a dozen federal government ministers with beards, and nobody has ever asked them to shave their beards.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

Not sure if beards are under attack. However Pak army has been cleaning up its house and getting rid of "Islamized fellows" from amongst its ranks.

This off course is the right thing to do. Jihadis inside or out of Pak army were needed for a specific mission. Once the mission was over, those guys should have been relieved of their duties.

A true soldiers is "married" to his country and not some religious mumbo jumbo. A soldier is "reusable" for many different types of missions. He gets the orders to fight for a cause at a given time. Once the cause is not there, he should be able to move away from it, and be ready for the next reason that his country needs to go to war.

Jihadis on the other hand are not "reusable" rather “disposable” piece of army. They can not adapt once their mission is over. So they quickly become outdated and thus a danger to the society and the country.

p.s. A beard on a soldier never looked good anyway. Beards and other lose hair are good for philosophers, teachers, or religious leaders who have gone so deep that it doesn't matter to them either way.

Army officers or Jawans on the other hand should be clean shaven and "jar-heads".

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

Ah! So basically Pakistan forces are not willing to tolerate the religious beliefs of those who serve the forces. :k:

I think it’s about time Pakistan changes it name to ‘Republic of Pakistan’ from ‘Islamic Republic of Pakistan’.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

About time Sadiyah!

This Islamism is the biggest hoax perpetrated against innocent Muslims. From Qazi to Bibi to Nawaz all have used Messenger pbuh name but all of them advanced their petty little nefarious agendas.

It is time for people to wise up and nip this Mullahism back to the tribal cesspool.

Islam was supposed to bring an era of truthfulness, tolerance, and trustworthiness. Instead all these politicos and Mullahs have given us nothing but terrorism, and tribalism.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

yup..it was a sikh guy that wanted to wear his turban in the RCMP - but RCMP officer's wear hats as part of their uniform. and as sadiyah said...he won in the end.

Re: Pakistan Airforce Crackdown on Beards

Sikhs have a unique situation of having "freely growing hair" as part of the 5 pillers of their faith.

Muslims however are free from beard as our 5 pillars are different.
